I am finding it difficult to write a few lines about such a beautiful and complex book. Set against a horrific background, that of the cultural revolution with its misery and persecution, the novel invites us to share the journey of an aspiring painter to self-discovery as an artist and a man.

As others, I had trouble getting into this book. I did slog through it, and there were some fascinating historical parts, but found myself skimming through a lot of the description. Unfortunately, I find myself doing that with a lot of contemporary novels written in French!

Chinese French adventure...given to me by Liu Tang and shared with many. Deep experience of awakening as a foreigner, as a friend, as a prisoner, as a lover

Some beautiful passages among a lot of extraneous detail. I enjoyed certain quite a bit but overall I felt weary by the end.

A nice story about a Chinese Artist and his struggle with the Chinese Comunnism and the new political Order.

Interessant wie ein Chinese Paris erlebte.
Die Aufklärung der Mao Zeit eines Schweizers wie mich.

Had to put it down. Could not get into it, will try again sometime, maybe.
