I am finding it difficult to write a few lines about such a beautiful and complex book. Set against a horrific background, that of the cultural revolution with its misery and persecution, the novel invites us to share the journey of an aspiring painter to self-discovery as an artist and a man.
In fact the book is all about apprenticeship, what you learn from teachers, friends and lovers as well as strangers, jailers and other tormentors.
Defined and eventually betrayed by a friend and a lover, Tia

As others, I had trouble getting into this book. I did slog through it, and there were some fascinating historical parts, but found myself skimming through a lot of the description. Unfortunately, I find myself doing that with a lot of contemporary novels written in French!

Chinese French adventure...given to me by Liu Tang and shared with many. Deep experience of awakening as a foreigner, as a friend, as a prisoner, as a lover

Some beautiful passages among a lot of extraneous detail. I enjoyed certain quite a bit but overall I felt weary by the end.
