Anne rated it: 3 of 5 stars (review of isbn 0306811049)

So I read this because I wrote a paper on A Night at the Opera, and while I didn't love the movie (nor do I find the Marx Brothers especially funny onscreen), I'm fascinated by their lives and their characters. And Groucho is quite hilarious on paper. In fact, I only gave this 3 stars because I couldn't help being put off by the sexism. But I was laughing out loud during a few of the essays, especially his longer section on the history of love. Recommended, for a slightly different side of G...more

I'm giving this a slightly low rating simply because I had expected to like it much, much more than I did. I stuck with it about halfway, which is more than I'd give most books that didn't grab me. On display is Groucho's trademark style of wit, and while I am a big fan of it in general, it tends to wear on you when stretched out over the length of a book. There are still gags that work well, despite the years since the book was published, but of course there are also phrases that haven't weathe...more

Decent collection of essays, mostly of an auto-biographical nature and dealing with Groucho's numerous encounters with the fairer sex.
Light weight read, but Groucho is always entertaining. Though, I doubt I'd be eager to take relationship advice from somebody that managed to rack up three divorces.

Man, I love Groucho. This book was written in 1963, I believe, so not everyone is going to find his more risque humor palatable (lots of references to spousal abuse of various kinds and tons o' drunk gags) but if you put aside your 21st century political correctness for a while and just get into the sarcastic wit of one of the world's all-time funniest men you should find this book highly enjoyable.

I did.

I picked this book up in desperation for something to read, and, I must say. It's pretty lame. It's just one long gassy joke. The best thing about it is there are some amusing illustrations in this edition of Groucho Marx doing things like staring at a woman's cleavage or talking to a horse. Maybe that's the intended audience. I've got to get to the bookstore sometime soon...

I picked this up at a used book sale, and it's much like listening to Groucho in a Marx brothers movie. I think it's a lot of fun.

Groucho is one of America's most underrated comedic talents. A great book written in a style uniquely Groucho.

OK, not great. I was expecting more of a biography I guess, but it's just a bunch of semi-amusing stories and bad puns.
