This story, really a novella, is the one I use to introduce people to Dostoyevsky. If you like White Nights you will like Fyodor Mikailovich, I think, and if you don't you won't. In it we're introduced to a charming intelligent young man who lives on the edges of St. Petersburg life, a shy dreamer who spends almost all his time alone. The life of his observations and imagination is very full, however. He daydreams in 3d with vivid colors passionate intricate tales that engross him completely, to ...more

Well, at this moment, I'm supposed to be reading Clockwork Angel because I don't want to be a judgmental snob and form an opinion without even reading the book. Or this kind of book. BUT, I found White Nights, lost in my bookshelves. I think it was fate; I don't usually believe in fate, even though I don't have any proofs to disbelieve in it but also no faith to really believe in it, so I'm kind of floating in that department. However, in this particular moment, I think fate spoke to me. And oh ...more

The novella is subtitled as : A sentimental story from the diary of a dreamer . I like to look at it as a portrait of the artist as a young man: one of his early pieces that is a little overloaded with melodrama and tends to be overshadowed by later heavyweights like Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov and The Idiot. My infatuation with White Nights comes by way of Italy and through the vision of Luchino Visconti, who adaptaded the story for the silver screen. As St. Petersburg is some

Da igual ...more

A man of solitude and unhappiness survives through life with the encounters of good dreams. He dreams of friends and life-mate's and all is about to come to true in one inopportune encounter with a distressed lady. Can he live out his dream or must they just remain as dreams?
The writing prose is well done and the story touches on the two characters despair and happiness well. Self reflection for one protagonist might be one way to sum up the story.

“May your sky be clear, may your sweet smile be bright and untroubled, and may you be blessed for that moment of blissful happiness which you gave to another, lonely and grateful heart!”

Let me tell you something, no one can express feelings and emotions so deeply and perfectly like my dear, precious, and all-time favorite writer: Fyodor Dostoyevsky!
I don't know why my hands keep shaking when I read his novels! It's really weird! I feel like he's controlling me! possessing my soul!!!

آ ...more

I guess I didn't really connect with this story. Dostoevsky's beautiful writing raised my rating to 3.5 stars but to be honest I found the story to be forgettable, and I didn't really like the characters.

The psychological complexity of its main character, the unnamed dreamer is lost between his dreams and the reality, embracing continuously the need for change.
I was compelled, throughout the exploration of his emotional and spiritual dilemmas, the bitter loneliness in which he is absorbed, his sentimental deceptions and life struggles, to ponder. Undoubtedly, Dostoevsky craft existentialist observations and excogitations in his story that confirm him as a precursor thinker of existentialism.

Dostoevksy's eloquence in capturing a sufferer's state of mind in words can only be attributed to his deep rooted understanding of the human condition. His definition of suffering seems to appear like a beautiful dreary canvas of life that is both bleak, as it is bursting in color, the contrast can bring forth a vision of admiration from an onlooker and at the same time reminds him of its sometimes inevitable despondency. It is just but a reminder that sometimes FATE is harsh and can place you ...more

A mí, a pesar d

Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky (Russian: Фёдор Михайлович Достоевский), sometimes transliterated Dostoevsky, was a Russian novelist, journalist, and short-story writer whose psychological penetration into the human soul had a profound influence on the 20th century novel.

Dostoevsky was the second son of a former army doctor. He was educated at home and at a private school. Shortly after the death

“I am a dreamer. I know so little of real life that I just can't help re-living such moments as these in my dreams, for such moments are something I have very rarely experienced. I am going to dream about you the whole night, the whole week, the whole year. I feel I know you so well that I couldn't have known you better if we'd been friends for twenty years. You won't fail me, will you? Only two minutes, and you've made me happy forever. Yes, happy. Who knows, perhaps you've reconciled me with myself, resolved all my doubts.

When I woke up it seemed to me that some snatch of a tune I had known for a long time, I had heard somewhere before but had forgotten, a melody of great sweetness, was coming back to me now. It seemed to me that it had been trying to emerge from my soul all my life, and only now-

If and when you fall in love, may you be happy with her. I don't need to wish her anything, for she'll be happy with you. May your sky always be clear, may your dear smile always be bright and happy, and may you be for ever blessed for that moment of bliss and happiness which you gave to another lonely and grateful heart. Isn't such a moment sufficient for the whole of one's life?”
