Lady Danielle aka The Book Huntress
This is such a great book. Hester is a seemingly mild-mannered spinster with a peculiar habit of always wearing gloves up to her elbows. It turns out she was an escaped slave from a plantation where indigo was harvested, and has permanent dyeing of her arms and lower legs from working in the fields. She is one of my all time favorite heroines for her undying devotion to helping slaves escape their bondage. Her big house is an important stop on the Underground Railroad. She is uncaring of the dan...more

Still one of my most favorite love stories out there. Bev just goes to the inner most beings of a woman. Those who desire love and to be loved.

One of My Favorites

This is only my third novel by Beverly Jenkins. And she has yet to disappoint! I've read Night Song, Vivid and now Indigo. I enjoyed the heated romance between Hester and Galen. The chemistry between Galen and Hester was so charged, they couldn't help but fall for each other. Their story just leapt off the pages. Galen was so used to being able to get any woman he wanted and he was so undone when Hester constantly told him 'No', he just couldn't help but fall in love with her...more

Before Beverly Jenkins I didn't read romance novels. My experience had been suffering through several really bad, corny books to find a good one, or at least decent one. I was talked into trying one of Beverly Jenkins' books by a friend who even got me the book because I refused to waste my money. And what a wonderful, and exciting treat. I first read Vivid. I returned my friends copy and bought my own. And I have read all of Ms. Jenkin's books. I love the way she takes a background or supportin...more

This book is a romance placed in a historical setting in which I am not well-read, admittedly by choice.

I am finding that in this stage of my life, for whatever reasons, I am reading more books that have a good distance between my current reality and setting/events of the book. I start contemporaries and chick-lit and never finish them. I want to be carried to a different world, whether I'm reading a kick-ass urban fantasy, shape-shifting paranormal or a light-hearted Regency and some books and...more

This was really good. Really, really, really good. For some reason, even though I've read romance novels crazy since I was about fourteen, this was my first historical romance novel that features African Americans in American during the 1800's (which is just WRONG because come on, it's a important part of our history too). And I really lucked out with this one. It was really well written, with vivid sensual description and I love the way the author weaves in the setting into the story. It remind...more

Detroit's own Beverly Jenkins never disappoints when it comes to historical fiction. Indigo begins with letters in the Prologue from David Wyatt to Katherine Wyatt. In the letters, David explains how he gave up his freedom and became a slave just to be with the woman he loves. The man chose love over freedom! Can you imagine? Their love produced a child named Hester, who was eventually separated from her mother. David pleads for his sister Katherine to find Hester and bring her north.

Guilty Pleasures
Indigo is epic novel, a story about passion, love, hope, fear, faith, deception and friends during one of the darkest times in U.S. history. This is a book that touched my soul on many levels.

I find myself at a loss on how to come up with a review worthy of Indigo. My feelings about this book are beyond strong. Indigo has touched me on such a deep level that I am going to be telling everyone I know they should read it.

Have you ever read a book that touches you so deeply you think about it for da...more

This is one of my absolute all-time favorite Historical Romance novels. I read it for the first time in while in high school in the 90's, and have re-read it countless times since. The tale of Hester Wyatt and her Galeno was simply beautiful. I am enamored with strong heroines and their mates who do not attempt to stifle their independant natures, instead nurturing them and lending their own strength so that the union is enhanced. I very much enjoyed the amount of history that Beverly Jenkins in...more

I don't understand it. This book got SO MANY rave reviews, I had to read it! Three or four chapters in, and the writing is consistently wooden, the exposition is clunky and then some. What a disappointment! I don't understand this, an experienced writer, huge fan base, and a truly dramatic setting (slaves escaping to the North on the "Underground Railroad") and ... it falls flat? I continue to read, hoping that it picks up, but yet .... I've got 6 other books waiting to be read, too ... and a fi...more

Initial thoughts: I didn't like this as much as I thought I would. There were issues I had with certain aspects that I'll try to fully articulate later.

Full review:
Bullet points mostly because I'm trying to catch up on my reviews and may not remember all the details:

1. I didn't really start to have anything more than lukewarm feelings about Galen until about I was about 70% of the way through when I read his back history (how he started the work of Black Daniel and what it was like for him as...more

So I am so excited about this book I can not wait to read more from Beverly Jenkins. I really love to read stories from history. This story is a love story and a sory about how people can over come. Hester is the lead character in this story in tells how she helped to save slaves. One fateful night a very hurt man was given to her care. He was one of the most valueable people who helped get people to freedom. They fall in love and situations and circumstances happen a long the way to tear them a...more

One of my favorite books of Ms. Jenkins, I have reread this book over five times. I love the story of Hester Wyatt and Galen Vachon. He was very loving and giving to her. The setting is during slavery and he was the Black Daniel. He helped slaves to escape. If you never thought you could find love during a difficult time in life then this is the book to read.

All I can say is Galeno, Galeno, Galeno.

This was my introduction to Beverly Jenkins novels and my all time favorite work of hers. It was the first historical romance I'd read with Black main characters.

I love the way Beverly Jenkins weaves in our history with the romance. I can't get enough.

I love this story because it is a fictional, but romantic love story of two underground railroad conductors of African descent who love each other because of who and what they are, not because of what racism and the acceptance of black inferiority and classism within their race believes they should be!

From reading Indigo I just do not know how she got Galen to be in the same place at the same time that she was. Its just that he is really there for her in such a way that comes from a real romance together. Most of all he met Hester that day and that was his real friend, they have real story together.

Galen Vachon is the man! He treats a women how she is supposed to be treated and Hester was captured in his web fairly quickly. Once again, a book by Beverly Jenkins that I could not put down until I was done reading. I finished in one day and have read it multiple times since.

I loved it. I am truly a Beverly Jenkins fan. I am a sucker for historical romances and happy endings. The fact that it is African American historical romance makes it even more special and wonderful to me. Indigo was a great read I absolutely loved the heroine. I liked the hero too but he was a little too perfect at times. Great book, wonderful read.

By far this is my favorite book of all time!!! Ms. B has a knack for combining romance with history. I have read this book over and over and over again. I recommend this to any and everyone.

Loved it! Read it in one sitting. The entire book is engrossing at no time was I bored. What can I say about Galen a wonderful match and hero for Indigo. Indigo is a beautiful, courageous woman. The supporting cast just as engaging as the main characters.

Galeno is what a man should be. This book was so romantic. Yes you get a history lesson but the natural chemistry between this couple burns up the pages. Ms. Jenkins is one of my favorite authors.

Period romances are always appealing to me and black primary characters only makes it more appealing. Indigo was perfect in every way!

I think this may be my favorite book by her. Her first writings were wonderful. Loved, loved, loved this book.
