The Little Bit Scary People
Some people are a little bit STRANGE or a little too LOUD, and justa little bit SCARY.But I bet, if you knew them, and knew their favorite things, you'd think that maybe, (probably) most people aren't so scary after all.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, Michael Thaler hinted at the fact that you can't judge a person by their appearance in books like The Librarian from the Black Lagoon and The Teacher from the Black Lagoon. Carmen Deedy tried as well with her book the library dragon which showed that all librarians are as mean and rigid as some are made out to believe.

I had a stack of picture books to read while snuggling into my sweater out-of-doors at a local café. Leaves were on the ground, neighborhood chihuahuas had their jackets, cyclists had their scarves, and there air bit everyone anyway. It was an ideal setting for the little bit scary people…and not because the locals were all the scary [today]. The picture book’s urban setting is autumn with colors moving toward winter.

A little girl goes through the story and sees people who she thinks are a little bit scary, but she thinks about them in a different way. She thinks that if she really knew them they’re probably not that scary. I could use this book to teach students that there is more to people than what you may see on the outside. I could also teach them that they should get to know people first because they could miss out on a friendship if they just judge by the outward appearance. I could have my students w...more
The Little Bit Scary People by Emily Jenkins told a story with a great message. The book was illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. It was full of fun catchy colors and every picture representing the story perfectly. The moods of each character were captured to help give the reader a better understanding of how the characters are portrayed in the little girl's eyes. This book sends a message to not judge someone off their appearance. It was a cute story with a great ending. Definitely worth a read and...more
This is a book I wish I had read as a child. Nervous or timid children will probably get the most out of this book. What I like is that the characters are well developed in the illustrations, and the book isn't preachy. Also, it's great that it says "Some people are a little bit SCARY. But then, sometimes (most times, maybe, I think) sometimes they really are not." It's good to leave that little hint that some people actually deserve their scary air.

Recommended by Jules! Very sweet concept. Lots of people in a girl's life are a little bit scary, until she thinks what they'd be like if she knew them -- they probably read stories, and sing show tunes, and cuddle their cat. Great characterizations in the watercolor illustrations. I could have used this book when I was young and scared of just about anyone who was gruff or fierce (whether I've outgrown this is still up for debate!).
This is for all of you who have been in the crowded grocery store line and had your preschooler ask (loudly) why the lady in front of you has that scary looking .... (fill in the blank) ... mole, fingernails, tatoo, etc.
I love this charming book that talks about people and their uniqueness (quirks?). While it acknowleges that people can be "a little bit scary", they are also just people, like me and you.
Lovely.

A little girl points out a great variety of people in her life, all of whom are a little bit scary at first glance. With a maturity one wishes a lot of adults possessed, she imagines these people doing non-scary things such as being kind to a pet, going dancing, making pancakes for their kids. Just when I was wondering how a little girl would have such a wise world view and such a great sense of perspective, she points out a scary teen girl kicking a trash can who also plays footbal with her lit...more
Such a great intro to not judging people by the way they look. Of course I then had a bunch of little ones tell me "my mom tells me not to talk to strangers" and I had to say "no, of course not ... we just mean that if a new student comes to your class or moves in next door to give them a chance and get to know them before you decide whether or not you'll be friends."
Going home and telling their family the librarian said to talk to strangers. NOT AT ALL WHAT I MEANT. Gotta love kiddos. ;]

A child sees people who on the first impression appear different and scary, but she realizes that they are not so different from her and so they really are not scary at all. This book would be a great introduction to a discussion of how others are perceived; a great reminder that we are all not so different, but have much in common with each other.
Great story told through the eyes of a little girl who is trying to figure out "scary" people around her. She thinks they seem scary, but then uses her imagination to think about what they are probably "really" like in real life. Some of the scenarios she imagines them in are pretty funny too. Enjoyable, fun read! C. 2008, genre-realistic fiction
I loved how this book teaches to look a little bit harder at people, rather than turn away. But it's not just a teaching book, it reads as fun, interesting and entertaining. Great pictures and great form. We read this and lost track of it at the library, and found it again. Good reads helps us remember and keep track of good books. :)
Anyone you meet every seem a bit odd or even scary, but when you got to know them your feelings about them changed? Well this is a book just about that. This book is fantastic for all levels of readers with it's powerful message of don't judge a book by it's cover. It's a great book to read to help build community in your classroom.
Another really cute book. The Little Bit Scary People shows how everyone can be "a little bit scary," but have a really sweet and normal side too. The narrator imagines second lives for the people she considers a little bit scary, like the cafeteria lady and the principal. This was a cute story with incredible illustrations.
Shows how children think of people. some people might look scary but in the other hand they are not they do nice things other times that they might not see. even the people in your family might seem scary. how he says his sister seems scary but really she is nice because she lets him win when they play.
I preferred this one to the Mike Thaler, and I thought it worked better, too. Lots of different ways in which people can seem scary, contrasted with ways in which they totally aren't scary at all. It turns into a kind of game, with the brief suspense of turning the page: what is the scary person like at other times?
I love it! Every child daily encounters those people who are a little bit scary, but are really good people. I think this book is empowering, plus demonstrates ways to be compassionate and give people the benefit of the doubt. The illustrations are vibrant. I like the juxtaposition of illustrations that shows the same people as scary and welcoming.
