I still adore Tavi and all his friends, and Jim Butcher even managed to make me care about the Bernard and Amara part of the plot, although I'm still not impressed with his writing of romance. I mean, they've been together for what, 5 years at least now, and she STILL hasn't moved past the "he's so strong and gentle and when I'm in the circle of his arms I feel so cherished and safe!" stage of talking about him. But for some reason I didn't have the deep satisfaction at the end of th...more

Unable to wait for the paperback and unwilling to purchase the hardback when I own all the paperbacks of this series, I ended up buying the audiobook from eMusic.

This turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. It took me a good while to determine who everyone was based upon the narrator's pronunciation, but the emotion she placed into so much of her reading really added an extra depth to the story and made it that much more moving, especially at the end.

I'm really deeply involved...more

An excellent addition to the saga of Tavi of Bernardholt/Tavi Patronus Gaius/Tavi ex Cursori/Rufus Scipio and the evolution of his role in the complicated Aleran society. It would have helped to have a list of the extensive cast of characters and their aliases since it has been awhile since I read the previous 3 novels in the series but I was quickly caught up in the conflicts and subplots in this complicated society. A different view of the Canim's motivations and a renewal of our exposure to b...more

The Codex Alera is one of the very best in the fantasy genre that I've ever read. I'm not usually a fan of fantasy at all. This series is amazing - Tavi is an excellently-drawn underdog-style protaganist. Alera is a captivating world where elements are personified, maybe deified, and most of Alera's inhabitants can draw on an elemental power. Tavi accomplishes amazing feats and saves Calderon in each book, but it's written in such a way that each step along his path is believable. There are diff...more

Jim Butcher does it again. Another masterpiece. I bought it Thursday morning & finished it Friday night. I savored every moment of it, too. There were more scrapes & adventures for all of the characters, giving us a chance to see more about their strengths & weaknesses, and the overarching plotline just keeps right on going. There were several moments where I just could NOT figure out how they were going to get out of a jam ... and once again, creative solutions reigned supreme! Now,...more

once again a fast paced story; with multiple plotlines still running, not as jumpy as the rest which was enjoyable, some points of the series seem self-contrdictory, till you remember that much of the story is told from several diffrent points of view, so the imformation the reader has is only as accurate as the current characters knowledge, which does change. and once agian creative solutions win the day; and finally, (at least to me) in book 4 many things are resolved at least temporarly, and ...more

A friend called this series Pokemon in Rome! and it's true, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Oh, plucky underdogs, how I love you in your fantasy novel settings.

I take my fantasy WAY more seriously than I should, and I think Jim Butcher may be some sort of sick genius. This is not "high fantasy" in the Tolkien, Wolfe, or even Jordan sense. This is pulp stuff. It's not particularly self-consistent or even self-aware. These books often make me want to throw them across the room in frustration and shame. But every time I get to the point of giving up on them forever, Butcher does something compelling and truly inventive with his story telling. I'...more

Not quite as good overall as his previous book, but a better B plot which provides great insight into just how powerful people can get in Alera. The A plot suffers from dealing with revelations the reader already knows but the characters do not, combined with somewhat retreading previous concepts to pick up loose plot ends. However still a highly satisfying read.

This series just gets better and better, although perhaps I was easily charmed by the undercurrent of political commentary Butcher weaves into his books--characters take strong stances against torture, treating civilians as "enemy noncombatants," and overstepping the Constitu--I mean, laws of a country. Yet it never seemed heavy-handed to me, nor did it overshadow the plot and the characters I've come to love. The next book in this series should be coming out soon and I'll be looking...more

YAY! Tavi is growing up so impressively. Jim Butcher does an excellent job combining the characters and the plots in this series of books - a lot of the time, you'll get the "big sweeping epic" but feel removed from the characters, or if you get a lot of character development, you get a snoozy plot. Jim Butcher delivers both - every character, even minor ones, seem real and three-dimensional. And I'm very much enjoying seeing Tavi and his family deal with all the changes being thro...more

I have a love/hate relationship with Jim Butcher books. His writing style, action and imagination are satisfying reads. But I get frustrated and bored trying to explain again and again, with each book I read, what grates on me about his representation of women. So I'll just refer you to just about any of my other reviews of Jim Butcher books, and say that he hasn't grown in this area at all. :P

I also think this book could and should finish this series, happily, but apparantly t...more

Just wow, is all I really have to say about this one. The previous books have each been a little tough for me to get into, but once I'm into them, I love them, but this one is DEFINITELY my favorite so far. It grabbed me (again) right from the start and didn't let go, and when it was done, I was VERY sorry to have to wait to reenter the Codex Alera world. In fact, I'm currently reading the newest book in another one of my favorite series (in the top five at least) and I'm STILL missing Alera....more

Definitely the best in the series. Jim Butcher keeps getting better at what he does, which is come at a tired genre from a different perspective. And the best part is that it appears that this series is not yet over.

The hero, Tavi, has some major revelations in this book that I won't give away here, but it's clear that these revelations will have far-reaching effects. It'll be great fun to see what Butcher does with his characters now.

Anyone who likes fantasy but is tired of reading t...more

Butcher's Dresden Novels were (along with Simon R. Green's Nightside's) what got me into my current urban fantasy kick. This is more of a traditional fantasy novel, although given the names of equipment, particularly military equipment, and locations...there must be a lost Roman legion somewhere in the back-story; my other current kick is the time-travel / post-apocalype / wilderness type story, and the "lost legion" is practically a cliche at this point for that genre.

Either way, ...more

I *think* this is the best one so far. That might just be because I was so excited when it came out. :D But it's definitely very good stuff.

I was almost disappointed when I thought one of the main female character's personal dilemmas had been resolved deus ex machina style but I should have known Butcher would treat his characters better than that. Now I look forward to whatever resolutions he'll give all these folks I've grown to love so much. But... hopefully not until he's written anothe...more

I hate reading a series of books that I enjoy this much when the series isn't complete.

Yes, the character progresses in what is now the 4th book of the series. Yes, he has gained more abilities to deal with the circumstances. However, Butcher has done a great job of not allowing the hero's abilities to over match the challenge of the story. Our hero must still, and perhaps even more so, survive by his wits. The hints given at what is to come make this a scenario that will not be overcome...more

Butcher scores with another awesome installment of the Codex Alera! The author brings to life a truly original and believable world with the series. His characters jump off the page with heart wrenching humanity and his masterful action sequences will have your blood pumping with page turning fury. This book has a less satisfying ending than the others (and it sort of has to) but it also brings about many of the changes and revelations for which readers have yearned. Looking forward to the n...more
