Livro bastante sagaz, e necessário, posto que poucos estudiosos se dedicaram ao tema em pauta (a relação entre historicismo e religião).

O autor enfatiza as raízes religiosas do ceticismo de Burckhardt; de fato, o ceticismo do suíço é notável. Mas creio que Howard acaba tentando resolver o que é paradoxal, deixando de lado a importância da dimensão estética da Bildung. O mundo é um vale de lágrimas, mas, também uma fonte de prazeres.
