Recommends it for: everyone!
Ever since I read False Charity, the debut novel featuring the intrepid English widow Bea Abbott, I kept thinking she reminded me of someone, but I couldn’t think of whom. In the middle of False Picture, it hit me: M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin — only not so pretentious or man-hungry or silly. So all the cleverness, all the humor, all the quirky characters, all the joy — and no downside!

Readers will love False Picture even more than False Charity. In this second novel, Mrs. Abbott sends the flight

Bea, against her better judgement, agrees to help her friend Velma. Unfortunately Velma has not given her all the information she needs. Velma's step-son has disappeared with a valuable painting by Millais belonging to his godmother who has been murdered. Velma suspects he is the murderer and wants Bea to find him and find out the truth. Bea's assistants, Maggie and Oliver prove invaluable in getting to the bottom of the mystery - which is defintely not what it seems.

This is the second installment in the Abbot Agency mystery series. I was disappointed in the beginning of it because so far all three novels in the series have had exactly the same format: there is a murderer (or at least a criminal) whose thoughts and actions are written in italics. Bea Abbot and her cohorts try to solve the mystery without involving the police. And yet the characters are charming and there is suspense, so you want to keep on reading. In the end I quite enjoyed it!

The second in this series by Veronica Heley. A new cast of characters for the Abbot Agency. A complex mystery with evolving ...more

This is the second book in the Abbot Agency series. Bea is finally settling down to widowhood and to her new staff members when one of her oldest friends approaches her with a request to clear her stepson from a charge of murder. Bea tried to tell her they don't investigate murders, but this is friendship after all. The whole crew gets involved in the investigation, even Bea's ex husband. The characters are changing and maturing as the series progresses.

Second in the Abbot Agency mystery series set in London featuring a likeable widowed protagonist and her engaging sidekicks: a very young and very brassy divorcee, an earnest teen computer nerd and her charming artist ex-husband.
