My Wife
For the last thirty-odd years a menagerie of porcelain figurines, dressed in late 19th Century clothing, have been occupying a prominent place in our china cabinet. My wife collected them when our children were still young. These animated animals, by their mere presents, have become as familiar as family, yet I really never actually knew their story. In order to learn about these already familiar figures I picked up and read Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter by Beatrix Potter. I can now put a...more

Charming illustrations, of course, and cute stories to read as an adult. Unfortunately, the writing is now so dated, it is half incomprehensible to young children. Potter is also very wordy, sometimes about nothing of any particular importance to the plot. Whenever I read these stories aloud to preschoolers, the children are bored. Abridged Potter tales seem to suit that age group better.
Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit is a classic in our family. I can remember my Grandma Vellys reading this story to me countless times. It's very nostalgic for me. Like Mother Goose, the Beatrix Potter treasury is full of characters and stories that are part of our culture. HOWEVER, there are a few stories that are a little alarming. When I was reading the story of The Fierce Bad Rabbit to Graham as a toddler, we were shocked to turn the page and read the next line: "This is a man with a gun". He a...more
We read the story of the Two Naughty Mice today and my two youngest were laughing so hard they could hardly stay on the couch. Every time I read Hunca Munca they'd start all over again. It was the name, not the actions that were making them laugh.
Thus far the only story that really bombed was the Tailor of Gloucester.

Beatrix Potter was one of my favorite authors as a little girl. (I was also a fan of the TV series "The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends".) There's a reason her stories are so enduring. Her delicate illustrations and straightforward storytelling resonate with children, especially very young ones. Generations have loved her work and I'm sure future generations will too.
I absolutely adore Beatrix Potter and her entire collection of children’s stories is wonderful to read all in one go. I loved the stories in childhood just as much as I do now and would probably struggle to pick a favourite.
