Late one night (in the world of the future), a giant cargo hovership makes an emergency landing somewhere in the middle of the United States, and an enterprising citizen named Johnny Clinton stows away on it. In the space of only a few hours the craft crashes into the Pacific Ocean. The sole survivor is Johnny, whose life is saved by the "People of the Sea"--dolphins. A sc...more

E lì comincia la...more

It seemed quite naive and simple adventure story for young readers. Though there was a good material to develop – the legend told by dolphins about the spacecraft fell into the ocean a long time ago. Based on that information some scientists wanted to find that shipwreck to research it. The bad thing is that this idea is just mentioned near the end of a book and is not developed. Although I believe that Ser Clarke could write better work on the subject of communication between human and dolphins...more

It didn't occur to me that this is probably a younger-person's read, however I found it still quite enjoyable. In fact, I think this book could be suitable for just about anyone.
As long as you are looking for something that truly will provide an escape; bringing you to another part of the world and which also follows an interesting story--you shouldn't be disappointed. It is also a very quick read.

It follows the story of a teen named Johnny, who is a runaway, travelling over the Pacific when his...more

This book really got me into reading adventure novels. Before this I was an Enid Blyton fan, I guess I still am, but this set the stage for me and boys action adventure. I wrote many stories during my school days after 'Dolphin Island' Arthur C Clarke was fantastic with descriptions.
I read this book over three times and recently read it again last year. It has survived time and is still a great YA read.
I would recommend it to boys from age 9-99.

One of the most influential books of my young life, and probably the only science fiction I've ever enjoyed. Based on the work of John Lilly in communicating with dolphins, this is a great book for adolescents but also gives you the chance to learn about dolphins, an astonishing animal with an enormous brain — and heart. This book made me want to be a marine biologist.

Favorite book because of the natural parts about dolphin communication, development of the boy's character, the science fiction-y part about escape on a hovercraft, and the mysterious message that dolphins and other sea creatures have carried a legend from the past about a flying ship crashing into the ocean and sickening all creatures around it.

An excellent quick read, Dolphin Island is extremely pleasant. I has the feel of another planet, another way of life, yet it has the comfort of home. I loved all the interaction with the dolphins and the exciting ideas stemming from this book. I finished it in a matter of hours.

This book is a fun read, but the writing style is a bit dated since it was published in 1963. It's written in the third person to the extreme. That said, it's a creative story that takes place in a future where humans have figured out a way to talk to dolphins, who prefer to be called the "People of the Sea." This book includes great details about marine life and the ocean and is a fast read, with action, adventure and a little sci-fi to boot! A great book for all ocean fans!

If I'd have read this back in the 60s the scientific ideas and advances probably would've felt fresh and intriguing. Because of the passage of time the ideas in the story lacked the mind-blowing impact they may have once had. That being said I still found the story to be fun.

This is a brilliant tale, primarily for young lads of 10+, but great for anyone who is interested in reading about diving, sharks, killer whales and those cute, intelligent dolphins who have their very own legends to impart to those that can understand.

A young adult sci-fi adventure about a boy who runs away from home and stows away on a trans-oceanic hovercraft. He gets stranded on a tropical island and a community of porpoise become his friends and family.

When I was in high school my passion was dolphins. This book fueled that and a love of all things in or to do with the oceans. This is a great adventure read and I recommend it for all ages.

ok, great story but I must admit that I give it 5 starts because my mom used to read this to me when I was a kid and the story sticks with me still. Thanks mom.

For a dated YA novel, Dolphin Island was surprisingly entertaining. Arthur C. Clarke managed to capture my interest with this simple but engaging story.

It seemed quite naive and good for young ready, has lot of mysteries. but i think "the boy who played with dark matter" is a descent read

Sehr kurz, naiv und oberflächlich. Aber mit einem gewissen Charme, dennoch wohl ehe für jüngere Leser

I read this book aloud to my oldest son and we really enjoyed it. It gave us a lot to talk about.

This is one of the few "juveniles" ie, young adult novels Clarke ever wrote. It's main character is sixteen year-old Johnny Clinton. Lost in the pacific, he is saved by a pod of dolphins who bring him to Dolphin Island, a research station in Australia's Great Barrier Reef. There he becomes involved in their research into dolphin-human communication. I don't find this as memorable as The Deep Range, Clarke's other novel dealing with Earth's ocean--a surprisingly rare setting in science fiction--o...more

I've read this one as a child, and loved it back then.

Clarke is always exciting.

The author was known to have a great interest in dolphins. This book wasn't all that great compared to others he wrote. Good enough and short enough to finish and diverting enough too. Young Adult Fiction.

I seem to remember this book starting in an odd way - something about some boy in the future running away from home and stwoing away on some weird vehicle. Anyhoo, anything by Clarke is interesting.

One of the quickest books I read when I was a teenager. Loved it and great because it was by Arthur C Clarke who my dad liked too.
Danielle
I vaguely remember reading this book when I was in 5th or 6th grade and loving it. That does not mean that I would still love it now.
Stephanie "Jedigal"
Loved this book as a kid. A great intro to sci-fi for kids, as it is not very far from an earth they can recognize.
Nico
Probably not his best work, though his descriptions of the Australian barrier reef are incredible. Like it okay.
