Once in college I actually seriously thought about bidding some insane amount of money on eBay for the original edition of this book because it was only published as an edition of 300 handmade copies. I still want it but thank god this came out in a nicely designed book so that I could open it and then be savagely torn apart by Thompson's biting prose. Plus, I kind of think the title is hyphenated on purpose as a playful "fuck you" to Thompson's good buddy Jack Nicholson. Just a theory...more

Like much of HST's writings, the read is quick and gripping and then hopelessly musing. I can best describe it as reading like a drunken newspaper; there are moments of clarity, moments of intriguing story telling, then moments of self-indulgent pessimism on the state of culture, sanity and the combination thereof. All in all, its wonderfully honest and involved. No white lies in the gonzo journalists' typewriter. It's all collected, packed and shot out with the urgency of a front page headline ...more

when one (i believe Don Johnson) once asked HST why he never wrote about sex, HST wrote this short yet beloved rant of his fictional physical relationship with his cat. Honestly this is perhaps HST's only short piece of fiction (next to the two others that are in the book) that has ever been published. Its a short tale and goes straight to the point.

this is pure gozno styled fiction at its prime.

I have to admit, I'd never read any Hunter S. before...maybe this was a bad place to start. I HATED it, especially the first story, a bad trip in a hotel room. I sort of liked the second, and then hated him for the 3rd which I wanted to like but just couldn't understand. Somebody makes out with a cat.

Interesting set of short stories. The one that sticks out in my mind is the one about the guy who visits a friend who is in trouble with the law, abusive to his lover and an inflatable love doll is involved. The subject matters are serious enough but the story itself is just funny.

High weirdness!

What was Hunter S. Thompson getting at in this writing? What was Hunter S. Thompson ever getting at? That was one strange dude!

Cassidy sent me this book and I read it. It was really strange, especially the last part.

Whoa!

At his best, Hunter Thompson is one of the best American writers this side of WWII. He is not at his best here, although there is a great short about an experience with hallucinogenics (duh). And some strange stuff about a cat.

The stories in this brief book are mostly disjointed, but still entertaining. I am mostly unfamiliar with the circumstances surrounding this book's release, but the material within in no way justifies the price.

Not his best work by far, though "Mescalito," one of the three short stories in the collection, is a great read as it chronicles the good doctor's first experience with mescaline.

A great introduction to HST's genius for first-timers. If you have only read Fear and Loathing you are doing yourself an injustice.

HST at his darkest. Take the diner scene from Fear and Loathing and extend it to 60 pages and that is this.

Short but very sweet. "Mescalito" is gonzo condensed and "Screwjack" is beastiality-soaked madness.

Very weird, even by Dr. Thompson's standards. Entertaining as hell though!
