Howl's Moving Castle is quirky and enchanting. Diana Wynne Jones' writing has an innocent wonder, humor, and subtle wisdom that is pure magic. I have read a shelf-full of her books and loved every one. This book not only didn't disappoint but was a delightful surprise. None of the characters is quite what they seem, even to themselves, and everything is in a lovely, chaotic mess.

Diana Wynne Jones’ novel "Howls Moving Castle" emphasizes many blending of themes. The book’s themes include a combination of love and romance, fate, and determination. Jones synchronizes her message to her readers that love prospers all obstacles in this fantasy novel.
The author makes it clear in this novel about her views of society today. With the addition of wars that create destruction and chaos that solve nothing. In addition the self conscious of appearance being a problem today in socie...more

It's a wonderful story that I simply enjoyed. It took me through a journey that was exciting, adventourious and the most fun I've had reading a science fiction book. I recomend this for people who are taken away by magic, adventure and wonderful detail.
When I read this book it made me feel like I could continue the series without thinking, "Oh, these characters are just too dramatic," or "This is just boring, why should I continue to read this, I know what's going to happen."

I like many others picked up this book after seeing the Hayao Miyazaki animated interpretation. I am a huge Hayao fan and became extremely interested in the story line. I must say, the plot of the novel is almost completely different than the film but in the end I closed the book smiling. The characters weren't as romanticized as in the film but it added depth to their character and charm. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. This is going on that short list of books I will likely read and re-read un...more
I thought this was a great story with unique perspectives which I love about young adult literature. The technique telling it is why I gave it a low rating. Taking into consideration I believe this book was written for a younger audience than an adult, it was somewhat predictable, some parts were confusing to figure out what was going on and lacked good description. Characters were fairly hashed out but nothing spectacular. And character development was jolting at times with character changes t...more
I will openly admit that this book has it's flaws (there are a few leaps in character and story that lack development), but I really loved it. Sofie, the main character who has always been certain she will be a failure due to being the first born, has to set out on her own after mistaken identity causes her to be cursed with early old age. Her advanced years give her the courage and surliness to seek employment with the local "wicked" wizard, Howl, as a cleaning lady. There she lives, causing tr...more
I thought this was a very cool YA story. The kind of thing that you don't have to be a teenager to enjoy. A girl gets turned into an old woman by a particularly nasty witch. She seeks refuge in an old, magical, moving castle which is home to a grumpy wizard who is renowned for kidnapping girls. There is nothing too taxing/tragic/emotionally demanding in there, just humour, magic and mystery.
I didn't know that there was a book to this movie and when i found out i had to read the book. I must say the i did find moments where i was haa that was like the movie but in the ending i was like that was nothing like the movie but either way i love both the movie and the book...I think i like the romance between Howl and sophie better in the book.. i'm weird like that.
This is a book my wife read aloud to each other. however, the wildly twisting story and abrupt plot twists make it a hard book to listen to. Spanning the complexity over six months only makes it harder to keep track of the various characters, few of whom are as they seem.
I think if I were to re-read it normally, I'd enjoy it a lot more.

I think this book is a lot easier to love if you first read it as a kid, but even if you are older, I still recommend this book. Howl's moving castle has made me laugh out loud, and I still go back to it every year. Howl and sophie's relationship left me with that warm fuzzy feeling that I'm always looking for in books.
Will say I mean the book by Diana, but I have always loved the movie made by Miyazaki so when I got the chance to read it it was so happy, but I got even happier when I found of it was much better than the movie! Diana creates a truly amazing universe and this is surely a book I will read more than once!
