Yeah, I really liked this. I couldn't wait to get back to this one & it was a perfect beach read. I am a sucker for Dev. I think he is a really cool character.

The basic plot - Vamp Queen Lady Danny runs into solitary bushman in bar & takes him up to the hotel for a spin. She leaves him after some intense fun. He comes after her when he finds out the friend at the hotel sold her out & some baddies are after her. She almost dies - he comes to her rescue just in time. The characters of Lady D & Dev are great. I thought Hill did a super job making you believe in them even in the hardest & most OTT situations. There was only one eye rolling induced moment for me at the end w/Lady Lyssa. Other than that - I bought it. A really great escapist book that was solidly written & had a few moments of genuine surprise for me.

I think the Epilogue was my favorite part & I thought Hill's prose really shined in that whole bit. It was tenderly written w/out being maudlin & I really enjoyed how she tied in the love of Australia & the Outback in w/the characters.

Overall, Hill was really clever in how she insinuated that great love & appreciation for that harsh Australian environment to these 2 MC's as a parallel to the harshness of their realities & probably the reason why they are drawn to each other.

It made me believe/see how well suited these 2 characters were to one another. The Outback being their quiet escape from the horrors they have seen & gone through. It taught them resiliency, humility, respect, determination & sheer survival grit despite their odds time & time again.

Yup. I totally bought it.

Even when you have an Alpha male like Dev getting buggered up the arse. IDK - the fact that he could stand it, make peace w/a pretty harrowing dinner experience & eventually come back to D - only made me like him more.

So far the rumors are true - Hill's books are getting stronger. I hope the next one is even better.

I didn't really like this book. It's the only one of the series I've read (I read it 1st b/c the author said on his website it can be read as a stand alone) so far and won't be reading any of the others.
I love to read and am a very fast reader. However, this book did not hold my interest in the least. I only finished it b/c if I don't finish a book (regardless of how dreadful the book may be) it drives to crazy not to finish it as I wonder if wouldn've gotten better further into the book....more

I wanted him and I wanted her!!! What a great sexy hot erotic book. Dev an Aussie outback falls for a blonde vamp by the name of Danny, it was so hot from page one in the bar scene I had to take deep breaths!! I'm having a love-hate feeling about this story. I was interested in reading it when I found out it's about Lady Daniela and Devlin. They were an intriguing couple whom I first read about in the second book in this series (The Mark of the Vampire Queen).

This was an interesting 3rd book for the series which takes place in the early 50s in Western Australia. I have to admit that the dialog and expressions were hard to get used to, but in the end, lent such an air of authenticity. Lady Daniella meets bushman, Devlin in a rough bar in the Outback. Joey W. Hill is a wonderful story teller. I enjoyed the Australian Outback setting the Aussie Vernacular, even some of the historical moments she touched on made me remember Aussie history. Considering she is not Australian I thought she did a wonderful portrayal. I like the way Joey writes a love story, she seems to touch on the mental level not just the physical of the two main characters. I can't say I'm really big on red headed characters but she does describe Dev as being extremely manl...more

We are taken to the Aussie Outback, where Lady D is going home to settle a few scores and reclaim her home. She is a born vampire, royalty in her world, but that does not mean that life has been easy for her. She has never taken given a third mark, having no desire to have a full marked servant until she meets Devlin. Dev is hiding out as a bushman. He lost his family in a brutal attack and when we meet him in 1953, he has secluded himself in the outback, only coming into civilization briefly every few months. He comes across as being a rogue living in the wilderness, but he's actually an educated man escaping the pain of his past.

This story grabbed me from the very beginning. I loved the Aussie setting and the dialect. It was a great change of pace. The chemistry between Lady Danny and Dev was perfect. Even knowing what she was, he found himself drawn to her. Again, we have the dominant, alpha male in a submissive role. He surrenders to her in order to protect and care for her, and that battle of the wills is always entertaining (and hot!). Like Jacob, his introduction to the role of a vampire's servant was shocking. In some ways, Dev had it harder because his choice was taken from him. There were many aspects of the story that were emotionally hard to read, the main one being our introduction to the pack of wild vampire children used to hunt Dev down for sport. But there were also many tender, sweet moments between Dev and Lady D.

This world that Joey Hill has created for her vampires is completely enthralling to me. I can't seem to get enough of it. It's dark and seductive, violent and tender. Those contradictions make for a fast-paced read full of surprise turns. I am hoping that over the course of the next few books in the series, I will get to watch Lady Danny grow into the vampire mistress we saw in The Mark of the Vampire Queen. There is no doubt in my mind that wherever the next books in the series take me, I will be coming back for more!(less)

This is the 3rd book in the series and moves away from Lady Lyssa and Jacob to concentrate on Lady D and Dev. The book backtracks from where we first met D and Dev to tell the story of how they 1st met and how Dev becomes D's full servant. Again there are some pretty steamy scenes, but they are less about dominance and submission until the end. I did enjoy this book. It was a little hard for me to get into it at first. But, I think a big part of that was that I was sick and just could not focus on the story very well. Lady Daniela is a vampire and it is common for vampires to take a human servant that they give three marks. While all servants are given at least two marks it is a very special honor to be chosen for the third mark. A unique and very strong relationship forms between a vampire and her fully marked servant. She has to rely on this servant for protection while sleeping, nourishment from their blood and also physical and mental companionship. Dani is a young vampire and hasn't ever had a fully marked servant before. When she meets Dev it seems their destiny is inescapably intertwined.

A Vampire's Claim is an extremely scorching hot read with most of the focus being on Dani and Dev's physical relationship. What first starts out as a sexual attraction, slowly evolves into a deeper emotional attachment that has both Dani and Dev worried. Dev himself is a damaged man who lost a wife and child tragically. He is no longer capable of loving on that level again. Dani is supposed to view her human servant more as a beloved pet than a soul mate. She worries about her unnatural attachment to Dev.

The world building takes a backseat to the sex, but what is there is good. Vampires live in a hierarchy and play dangerous political games. These games make it possible for Dev to showcase his talents in both bed and out. Readers will fall in love with the tragic hero and root for him to find peace. Dani is not as well drawn as Dev, but is still a worthy heroine for him. Fans of Joey Hill and readers who enjoy lots of imaginative sex won't want to miss A Vampire's Claim. (less)

Tone/flow different from 1st 2 books.
Slower...more background story...emotional conflict

Female vamp more laid back...loner...Aussie living in outback.
Male human...aussie bushman...family was killed...war veteran...loner. Nothing to live for.

Overall...good book...very good ending!

I enjoyed the humans struggle with the life/situation.
I loved that Lyssa from the 1st 2 books was in this...loved her authority & power/presence in this book!

Just finished this one last night. Lady Daniela is the vampire, and Devlin is the servant (for those that have read the others in the series). For me, Australia in this book was as much of a character as either vampire or servant, and it made for an intriguing - and very different - read from the rest of the series. I loved Dev and how strong and passionate he was, and intensely devoted to Danny. Great book.

This is a beautiful story of love. Its about two people who really need each-other. I found myself almost shouting at the pages when he left and breathing a sigh of relief when he came back. Some of the sex is a bit harrowing but in keeping with the context in which it is set. All in all a bonza read.

I would recommend reading this one first since it is set in 1953 Australia. It gives you a better understanding of the Vampire politics and gives you a prequel to Queen Lyssa and I enjoyed it very much!

Joey's Vampire series is my favorite. Now finishing #3 "A Vampire's Claim." Joey writes with such sensitivity in the psychological area as well as the physical, erotica area. These two go hand and hand and with out them together one has just read a story with nothing behind it. When you first meet Danny, she is one hard female Vampire. This is the third in Joey Hill's Vampire Queen series. Where as the others took place in the present, the setting for this one is the Australian Outback in 1953. I thoroughly enjoyed the bits of history that come through the story. These books are hard core. I admire the author's commitment to pushing to the extreme in the sexual situations because it really confirms what these vampires are all about. In the context of the story I found it to be very moving and profound.

From then on, though I may appreciate their craft or art, it has somehow been tarnished.

Therefore, whenever I’m asked to provide personal information about myself for readers, a ball of anxiety forms in my stomach as I think: “Okay, the next couple of paragraphs can change forever the way someone views my stories.” Why on earth does a reader want to know about me? It’s the story that’s important.

So here it is. I’ve been given more blessings in my life than any one person has a right to have. Despite that, I’m a Type A, borderline obsessive-compulsive paranoiac who worries I will never live up to expectations. I’ve got more phobias than anyone (including myself) has patience to read about. I can’t stand talking on the phone, I dread social commitments, and the idea of living in monastic solitude with my husband and animals, books and writing is as close an idea to paradise as I can imagine. I love chocolate, but with that deeply ingrained, irrational female belief that weight equals worth, I manage to keep it down to a minor addiction. I adore good movies. I’m told I work too much. Every day is spent trying to get through the never ending “to do” list to snatch a few minutes to write.

Despite all these mediocre and typical qualities, for some miraculous reason, these wonderful characters well up out of my soul with stories to tell. When I manage to find enough time to write, sufficient enough that the precious “stillness” required rises up and calms all the competing voices in my head, I can step into their lives, hear what they are saying, what they’re feeling, and put it down on paper. It’s a magic beyond description, akin to truly believing my husband loves me, winning the trust of an animal who has known only fear or apathy, making a true connection with someone, or knowing for certain I’ve given a reader a moment of magic through those written words. It’s a magic that reassures me there is Someone, far wiser than myself, who knows the permanent path to that garden of stillness, where there is only love, acceptance and a pen waiting for hours and hours of uninterrupted, blissful use.

If only I could finish that darned “to do” list. (less)
