The introduction written by Paul Hoover made the poetry all the more interesting:

I really wanted to like this book. Holderlin is one of those German mystics, simultaneously passionate yet detached, an observer of his own obsessions. Sadly, there is just too much preoccupation with the tropes of Ancient Greek gods and the German landscape, not to mention dashes of a cheap mysticism that makes Holderlin sound like a bit of a hippy. Hölderlin, who lived in a tower for more than 30 years, supposedly crazy,... but the poems before and after are all just as beautiful in their own right.

Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin was a major German lyric poet, commonly associated with the artistic movement known as Romanticism. Hölderlin was also an important thinker in the development of German Idealism, particularly his early association with and philosophical influence on his seminary roommates and fellow Swabians Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling.
