The Bookish Dame Shares :
Kept me laughing and crying all night long! Love this story collection. This book of short stories is truth and revelation the likes of which I had to marvel at and probably will forever. How did I live so long and not be able to articulate some of the vital, primal things in my feminine heart regarding male sexuality, a woman's reasons for sex, family relationships that don't fulfill love, and the like? I recognized them, but could never verbalize these feelings like De...more

One of the reasons I love doing this is because I get to read books I may not otherwise have come across. Sometimes a book is just okay, other times the book is crazy good. I'm reallly happy this is one of those times.
Shoes Hair Nails is a collection of short stories by Deborah Batterman. I am a fan of short stories because I like that there is a beginning, middle and end wrapped up in a little package. I like the diversity of a collection. With Shoes Hair Nails, I never knew what I was going to...more

The title of the collection references the titles of three of the eleven stories. These superficial sounding titles make sense, but camouflage stories with much more depth than implied by the names. Many stories felt as if there were multiple layers; different messages a reader might receive or more than one lesson to learn, depending on your own perspective.
For example, "Shoes" has a lesson about judging by surface appearances, but also illustrates that no matter how well you think you know so...more

reading this for second time, now that deborah, then an acquaintance has become a friend and the stories suddenly have back-stories. her love and facility with the language is something to behold; as is the combination of humor, tenderness and wisdom about the relationships between adult children and aging parents, friends, strangers eaves-dropped upon. she makes me wish i were a spouse or a parent so i could read of those bonds with experience and not simply empathy. this book deserved wider di...more
MY REVIEW
Honestly, I found this one a little difficult to get through. That is not to say that this book is poorly written. I found that I read more of the book by reading the individual stories in between other book reviews. I could see these individual stories being printed in the big name Women's Magazine's. The stories are detailed, and as the blurb above says are about everyday objects that we all have in our own homes.

This is an outstanding collection of truly original fiction. Batterman's characters surprise and yet seem as familiar as friends, while her stories consistently holds your interest. I was struck with the beauty of the language and metaphors, but the prose is never forced and doesn't call attention to itself. This is women's fiction in the best sense of the word - focusing often on relationships and feelings - all told with heart and a very steady gaze.

This book was ok. It had some references that were beyond my generation but my grandmother recently just passed so I have been dealing with many generational questions and family problems.
