I love this book. I was already obsessed with learning about food, so I knew a lot of what was in here, but now that I'm fighting with my husband against his disease, I'm more than motivated to know what foods (and other issues) help and hurt the healing (and cancer-prevention) process. I've not eaten meat for almost two months, save for fish, and although I doubt I'll ever announce myself a vegetarian, I won't be surprised if I never eat meat again. This book is fantastic. Whether or not yo...more

A fantastic book for anyone who has cancer, or has a chance of getting cancer (that means you)! A bit repetitive at times, but I listened to the audio version; the text version might not have been so repetitive as it narrated all of the summary lists and suggestions.
The take away from this is to eat healthy, and exercise or there is a very good chance you'll either get cancer, or if you already have cancer, you'll die sooner. This book really makes the case (again) for eating organic...more

This is a great book for everyone to read about the connection between American lifestyle choices and the prevalence of cancer. It was written by a doctor who researched what he could do to improve his odds against brain cancer. What he found was a change in diet, exercise, mental well being, and stress scientifically improves the odds of survival. Most of it is very logical-- improve your overall health, and your body will be better able to fight the disease. So, kick out the refined sugars an...more

READ THIS BOOK. The health information it provides (physical, emotional, spiritual) goes beyond the scope of cancer to encompass all bodily well-being. This is a poignant, meaningful, scrupulously well-researched book. It is life-changing. I can't emphasize more how necessary this information is. I read a lot of about health and nutrition and found this to be not only a great summary of things I already knew, but full of new insights and prescriptions. I couldn't put it down. This is a health bo...more

I think this was a very informative book and I learned a lot of interesting things.
At the same time I find it very sad that doctors only seem to recognize how wrong the current medical system is in regards to cancer only when they get cancer themselves.
It drives me insane to hear doctors say diet has nothing to do with cancer. They tell cancer patients to eat what ever they want. In the waiting rooms of major cancer hospitals they come around with carts giving soda and cookies wi...more

This book is extremely sensible. It is very well-written, to start with, and is an enjoyable read in its own right. In addition, it gives solid advice, telling people to combine a good diet with medical treatment for cancer. I also like the fact that it cites many studies--this is not some kind of "kook" book that advocates stupid methods for treating yourself. For those to whom it matters, the author is not religious (he's not anti-religious, either), so practicing Christians need to...more

I picked up an advance at BEA. Excellent. Advocates both traditional western and non-traditional therapies for cancer treatment and prevention.

The book is not organized that smoothly and jumps around from diet/science, to his personal experience, to emotional ways to cope with cancer, back to diet etc. Post conclusion is another chapter on the potential danger of cell phone usage. I thought the data and dietary suggestions to prevent and combat cancer were excellent. Upshot: less refined carbs/sugars - more dark veggies and fruits. Less transfats and chemicals, more organic. Less meat. More exercise. Strong mental health. Focus...more

This book is not only important due to all of the powerful information that is presented within it, but also due to the very moving stories of people with cancer.
The information is presented so clearly, professionally, and sited from all sources that it makes it, if not hard to ignore, very compelling to explore further. Additionally, it is easy to see that this information isn't really just relevant to cancer, but so many other 'Western' diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, st...more

This is the perfect book about fighting cancer using holistic methods along with traditional medicine. I felt it was very educational, but not judgmental about the choices we make every day concerning our diets and lifestyles. Since reading this book we buy almost exclusively organic meat and dairy. We incorporated a lot more fruits and vegetables into our diet. We got rid of our cordless phone and switched to old fashioned corded phones. We also got hands free devices for our cell phones, ...more

From the first 6 chapters (so far): I'm amazed at how much I've learned about health/diet. Maybe I'm behind the times but I had NO idea how much sugar and flour could affect cancer. I love how this author makes things easy to understand as a layperson, and you see how this stuff gets complicated! I like that it's written from someone who's in the medical field, not strict about saying everything must be done naturally. Lots of graphs, including which foods are important to be bought organic ...more

I didn't want to put this informative, non-sensational, practical, and optimistic book down. I liked it so much that I purchased two more copies as gifts. It's that valuable.
The author is a French doctor who was diagnosed with brain cancer fifteen years ago...and he's still alive and going strong. He shares what he has learned about nutritional and lifestyle treatments for cancer...but I love the fact that he doesn't advocate that we eliminate available Western treatments. He himself...more

I read this book when I found out that my sister was diagnosed with cancer. I wanted to learn as much as I can about cancer so that I could understand what she is going through. This book is amazing. Not only does it give a break down on a cellular lever as to what cancer really is (and yes, those chapters can get a little dry and boring), but the book gave a very good overall descriptions of different treatments. And who knew that certain foods actually FEED cancer cells. Scary...

The most amazing book ever. Everyone should read this whether your lives are affected by cancer or not. The book doesn't push one type of philosophy at you and the author backs up his ideas with sound scientific evidence. It really makes you think about what we're doing to create a bad environment in which for our immune system to function. This is the sort of book i've highlighted and stuck post its to the most important parts. A must must read. Everyone in my family is reading it now!

Very informative book. He is a physician and is a survivor of cancer. Because of his medical background he is able to provide an overview of the literature on cancer, interpret the findings of the research, and make well-informed recommendations in regard to lifestyle changes that may increase quality of life as well as guard against cancer to the extent that lifestyle may impact one's vulnerability to various types of cancer.

This book was a phenomenal read. It blew me away to read about how many ways that we can change our behavior to prevent cancer, and yet so much of this information isn't widely advertised to the public. Also, Dr. Servan-Schreiber explains all of the scientific information and studies in a way that is easy to understand and also fascinating. I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned about their health and lifestyle.

This is a good book on how to both combat cancer as well as prevent it, a lot of what was covered in the book I have already discovered elsewhere, but it is re-assuring to see it again and it is also nice to read about real life testimonials that are given in the book.
Much of the anti-inflammatory diet information in the book was new information to me, very intriguing and informative.

Not only does the author talk about past and present theories about cancer, but current methods to treat and PREVENT. He covers all aspects from the food we eat to toxins in our environment. Plus, he has personal experience in this area. As a new neuropsychiatrist at 31, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
PS- You will never want to eat boxed, conventional food from the grocery store again after reading this book!

It may just be a function of age, but preservation of health is becoming more important to us. Even I (Mr. Eat-Any-and-Everything) am beginning to think before I eat. This book was a real motivator--The idea of death is not particularly frightening to me but I would rather not make a painful slow exit via cancer if I can help it.
