This is a great overview of the history of English for immigrants learning the language. This book covers the following questions: How has the language changed over history? How did English become the most spoken language in the world? How was the English language influenced by other languages and cultures? How does it continue to change today?

The Illustrations are a bit dated. So is some of the content. Overall, I'd say it was good, but not exactly an exciting read. My favorite part of this boo

This was a great book explaining how modern English developed from languages all over the world. The last couple of years my boys have been involved in spelling bees. This book really helped explain why English has so many languages feeding into it. A good elementary introduction to languages.

This is a J non-fiction book, short and to the point. I was looking for something that beginning readers could read about English, the how and why of our diverse vocabulary and spelling. This is quite good for that purpose, with some very interesting details.
