The Book of Urizen: A Facsimile in Full Color
One of Blake's most interesting and powerful creations — a parody of the book of Genesis in which the righteous figure of God is replaced by that of Urizen, the "dark power." Included are 27 hand-colored plates rich in energy and monumental grandeur, along with a printed transcription of the poem.

Excellent edition of the Urizen books with useful commentary and annotations, esp. about the textual issues. This will be the standard edition of these books for years to come, but any study of The First Book of Urizen will need to be supplemented by other editions available at The William Blake Archive online.

As far as origin stories go, this one is pretty intriguing, but probably only because it's Blake. Most of the general ideas in the poem itself are reiterations of stuff found in earlier poems, but "Urizen" is crucial for Blake's overall mythology. A recommended read if for no other reason than I always recommend Blake.
a bit tough if you don't know what Los etc refer to -- but overall very beautiful poetry. It's William Blake after all. And of course the illuminations are beautiful
Interesting, highly original presentation, but I've never believed in the invisible enough to enjoy Blake.
Blake's images are beautifully disturbing, and his words would not feel out of place alongside the first chapter of Ezekiel in the Old Testament, or the Revelation in the New.
This will not do for a casual read. It requires study, and I expect to have to return to it more than once to hope to grasp what Blake was trying to say.

I didn't really understand this the first time. I'll need to re-read it someday ..
Challenging but rewarding.
Prophetic.

William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake's work is today considered seminal and significant in the history of both poetry and the visual arts.
