As a helping of “down-home magical realism,” this collection of 16 short stories explores the human spirit inherent in the bilingual, bicultural world of the Texas-Mexico border. With a fresh sense of humor and human understanding, these stories skillfully bridge the gap between miracles and tragedies, prejudice and transcendence, and oppression and liberation. From seeing the Virgin in the steam that arises from a tortilla, to weeping over the shooting of a young mother at the siege of the Alamo, to the leather-clad transvestite who roams the streets, this bountiful collection of short stories by Tafolla is an homage to San Antonio, to the magic of that city and especially to the people who have cared for her and loved her all along. This collection is one to savor.

So far so good. I like it. Obscure stories with a Latin appeal and view of the culture. Not too bad. I really did not want to read it at first because it was for class but I am glad I decided to open it. Short story fiction and all Texas based.
