I read a biography of Catherine the Great when I was younger that made me a lifetime fan - she was painted as the benevolent despot, of the mind that produced the American Revolution, but ruling with an eye toward conquest and what must have seemed to her to be pragmatism. I read many biographies of her when I was in high school.
