Introducing a major new doctrinal work written by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland who shares his apostolic witness of the central figure of the Book of Mormon — the Lord Jesus Christ. For most of a decade, Elder Holland has read the Book of Mormon repeatedly and thoroughly, focusing on all references to the Savior and his teachings. The result is an intelligent observation and th...more

Is it fair to give a church book only 3 stars? I love Jeffrey R. Holland. His conference talks are always so inspiring to me. I picked up this book a couple of years ago, and well it's taken me about that long to get through this book. I love how basic and simple the principles are in this book. A person who is investigating the church could read this book and truly have a better understanding of the Book of Mormon, that the Book of Mormon is truly all about our Savior Jesus Christ. I loved that...more

This amounts to a running commentary on the Book of Mormon by the Apostle, Jeffrey Holland. It is more or less a sequential treatment, but is broken up by topics related to Christ. While a very fine book, the phrase that came to me in retrospect was Nephi's personal assessment that "neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking." Holland, who is unarguably mighty in speaking (perhaps the best among all the Brethren) has done a commendable job, but I was neither moved or enlightened to the e...more

Dense reading. It took me a while to get comfortable with his writing style. I often had to re-read entire sections. Though this could be my failing, not his.

I read about 100 pages before I decided that this book would be best used as a reference book, a supplement, or one of those books where you read a chapter a week.

His insights, however, were fantastic. I will never read the story of the brother of Jared the same way again. Amazing.

I wouldn't mind owning this book, but I can't imagine readi...more

I am re-reading this book again because I think it is one of the best ever written concerning the Book of Mormon. Though it is not a "commentary" on the Book or Mormon, it provides the reader with a different perspective on how to approach it. With Elder Holland's insights compounded with a powerful testimony, it is one that stands out on my bookshelf and I'd recommend it to anyone.

This was given to me by my parents almost 10 years ago. My dad said he walked into the bookstore and couldn't even consider another book. It's message and Elder Holland's testimony have come to me many times in the years since I received it. I wouldn't consider it a cover to cover read. This, in my opinion, is meant to be a companion to your study of The Book of Mormon.

Recommends it for: Anyone who wants to know what the Book of Mormon says about Christ
Wow! A powerful testimony of Christ, the Book of Mormon, and Joseph Smith. The whole book is awesome, but the final chapter in which Elder Holland bears his testimony is magnificent. As I read the entire book, I could hear Elder Holland's distinctive voice in my mind. It was like he was reading the book to me. It was a marvelous experience.

Jeffrey R. Holland is amazing. He opens up so many doors in the Book of Mormon! He has the ability to make the scriptures so personal, making the Book of Mormon that much warmer a read.

Enlightening. It contains the scriptures of many passages, but adds an apostle's insight.

Another Testament of Jesus Christ

"This volume is meant to be more like a meditation upon scripture than a work of scholaship. . . . From the beginning it was intended to be a study of the Book of Mormon's contributions to our understanding of Christ."

I generally don't enjoy devotional books; I prefer to read scripture, honest history, or personal narrative. But Elder Holland is among the very best writers (and speakers) in the Mormon church. His style is clear and literate, with little of the bo...more

Though it's probably been said before, I'll say it again. This book is like a personal study of the Book of Mormon, only this time you've got Elder Jeffrey R. Holland by your side. The man knows how to express himself. His final chapter, Affirmation, is astounding.

I found this a perfect Sunday read, it seemed that about half of the Book of Mormon is quoted therein (minus the war stuff). As the title implies, it is dedicated to the study of Christ, references to Him, prophecies of Him, the appea...more

Excellent book and commentary on the Book of Mormon. Elder Jeffrey R Holland draws out brilliant points about the legitimacy and incredible history of the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ. For instance, the book begins with three testimonies by three men who actually saw the Savior -- Nephi, Lehi, and Jacob. It later ends with three testimonies by one man, Moroni, who has seen the Savior. This juxtaposition is strong because it keeps with the principle of by the mouths of thre...more

Jeffrey R. Holland is fantastic and scholarly, and much of his book is on par with his conference talks. I really learned a lot from the first chapters in particular. I loved his discussion of the the Brother of Jared. From that chapter, I learned the difference between preparatory faith and redemptive faith, and that one definition of faith is to agree unconditionally and in advance to whatever conditions God may require (now and later). I also felt Elder Holland's intense personal testimony in...more

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland is a marvelous writer. This took me well over a year to read, as it is meant to be pondered or as Sir Francis Bacon said, "digested," and is one of the classics that I will reach for over and over. It is a masterpiece in its comprehension of key doctrines of the Book of Mormon and how they point to Jesus Christ and the New Covenant. Some of my favorite chapters were on types and shadows and the Law of Moses, the relationship between the Father and the Son, Moroni's eluci...more

Finished this one finally. It was well worth it. Very worth it! I love the way Elder Holland has focused on different aspects and pulled together the references all centered on what we can learn of Christ. Recommend to all. And will be useful to refer to and maybe even re-read in the future.

One of my favorite quotes (ideas) he brought out is that we know very little about Jesus' life before his mission but only that He "grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God w...more

This is an excellent book for ALL members of the Church, new and very established. Do not read it thinking there is just commentary. Elder Holland spends the entire book showing how the scriptures mesh one with another. He uses the same scripture in several places and themes throughout the book. It reads more like Marion G Romney than Thomas S Monson. But by the time you are finished with it, you have a much better understanding of how the Book of Mormon is truly "Another Testament of Jesus Chri...more

In this book Elder Holland expounds on the teachings concerning Christ that are contained in the Book of Mormon. I feel inadequate to express how I feel about this book. It is deep and profound. For me it was like dipping a cup in the ocean and that's how much I took away from this work and yet that small amount lifted me, taught me and opened my heart and my understanding. My testimony and love for Jesus Christ has increased exponentially!! I would recommend this book to any who would like to t...more

A second time through this book was almost as insightful as the first. I especially loved the section on the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The clear discussion of moral agency, opposition in all things, the Fall, natural man, probationary state, unconditional gifts, conditional gifts and being spiritually born of God, gave us a great direction for our Family Home Evening discussions and activities for several weeks.

I also loved the insights I gained from the chapter called "Types and Shadows: The...more

OBVIOUSLY... it's Jeffrey R. Holland = it was amazing. But I think that's what I missed about it... there wasn't enough of HIM; of Elder Holland. The majority of text was quoted scripture and wasn't HIS words. And of course, that is how he intended it to be, but I was truly excited for this book because it was written by him.

An excellent look at the Book of Mormon as it teaches about Christ. This book has given me new insight and I will read the BoM with new eyes.

I was introduced to Christ and the New Covenant as a complementary book to "Jesus the Christ," by James E Talmage. The latter being a look at Christ through the New Testament (mostly) and the former through the "New Covenant" or Book of Mormon. Both written by Apostles, they both offer great insights into the depth that these two books give to Christ's being. However, they differ in that the book "Jesus the Christ" deals a lot with the culture and times that Jesus lived in. "Christ and the New C...more

This is more or less like reading Elder Holland's scripture study journal from the Book of Mormon. It is full of great insights and I feel like I gained a better understanding of some things regarding the Book of Mormon's teachings of Christ.

I would definitely say that this book ought to be read by those who are already very familiar with the actual Book of Mormon text. If you want to know what the Book of Mormon teaches about Jesus Christ, read the Book of Mormon first. Then read it again, and...more

I highly recommend this book! It is like studying the Book of Mormon with Elder Holland. He taught me so much more about the Book of Mormon! I even reread some of the chapters just to glean more information, and I will probably just start reading it all over again as I restart reading the BofM. I loved his writing, it is very readable and interesting.(sometimes I have trouble getting into some doctrinal books, but not this one.) I found this to be awesome in the truest sence of the word.

There's a LOT, and I mean a LOT of stuff packed into this book. A lot. And for me the audio format worked really well because I've always learned by listening more than anything else. Plus, I love Elder Holland's voice anyway. I did, however, feel like I had to listen to several of the chapters more than once. I think this is a book that I would also like in hard copy so it's easier to reference for lessons and talks and stuff.

Did it change my life? Mmm... probably not, but I think there are a n...more

Elder Holland speaks in a language I can understand. I have owned this book for about 5 years but never read it. What a dork. What was I waiting for. It is now in it's second printing I think, and has a little bit of a new look if you are looking for it at Deseret Book. If you love Elder Holland and I know you do, read it. I used it more as a study guide than a cover to cover read. I will continue to refer to it as I study my scriptures. So sorry I won't be loaning it out. You ought to own your...more

I started over it's been so long since I started reading it. So many wonderful insights. It makes me realize how much I have yet to learn and understand about the role of Jesus Christ in The Book of Mormon. This is a great book for anyone who loves the Book of Mormon and has read it many, many times, but wants to some additional insights from the perspective of an Apostle. This is not a commentary and not a companion book to the Book of Mormon, but the writings/thoughts about the Savior and the...more

This is a marriage of Jeffrey R. Holland's wisdom and a Book of Mormon subject matter. So right there you know you can't go wrong.

Elder Holland doesn't go through book by book, but rather bears his testimony and shares his insights into patterns he's observed in the Book of Mormon. There is a lot to be learned from Elder Holland about the Book of Mormon, and you can pretty much guarantee you'll learn a lot from this densely packed book of apostolic insights into the most important book ever writ...more

Very well written. It is basically a review and outline of all of the sermons and doctrines pertaining to Christ from the Book of Mormon. I would recommend it to someone if they were new or unfamiliar with the scriptorian style of writting. Elder Holland writes things so clearly and understandably it would be a good companion to studies.

As for myself, and the reason for only two stars, I didn't find in it anything new to me, and with some boredom put it down only a 5th into it.

This is a great book. Elder Holland is one of my "favorites". It was written after he became an apostle and his testimony is fantastic. Before he became an apostle he was president of BYU and before that he was dean of the religious department at BYU. He is at the cutting edge of doctrinal exposition. This book could just as easily been a "5" but there is no "4.5" rating so I've left it as a "4".

This book was loaned to me by my friend Ben. I loved using it as a supplementary study guide along with my reading of the Book of Mormon. Elder Holland is so insightful and did nothing to detract from the scriptures. He mainly focused on testifying and pointing out truths. It was wonderful and I gained so much more knowledge and a greater love for Jesus Christ through this book.
