As a fourth grader I read this book and took it very seriously. It was my dream to build a raft and go adventuring. Actually I did build the raft, but there was not enough water in the creek.
My other great ambition was to come marching into my own funeral. I still think that would be fun.
When I read about Tom taking a licking for Becky Thatcher in school and sharing his cake with her in the cave, I thought that was incredibl...more

Mark Twain is a master of humor and wit. The antics the kids get up to are as true today as they were over 150 years ago.
I will definitely be reading more of Mark Twain.

I remember one part, though, because it was my favorite. I remember the part when Tom is white-washing the fence and he gets everybody else to do it for him. I remember that when I read it I wanted to be like him.
I also remember the beginning. It starts out like this:
"tom" no answer. "tom" no answer.
I thought that was a good way to start. It is filled with suspense a...more

This book reminded me of what a great storyteller Mark Twain is. His omniscient narrator has just the right sense of irony, timing, humor and detail to keep the reader interested. The dialogue is well-written.
Of course when reviewing this book, I have to point out that it does use the n-word in reference to African-Americans. There also is a character named "Injun Joe". No one should start reading this book before knowing these facts.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Tom Sawyer is a mischievous little boy living in a village during the 1800s. He is a little boy with a broad imagination. Throughout the story he acts as a Indian, pirate, and robber. The thing about Tom is he not only gets himself in trouble but he is extremely convincing with other boys. He makes up stories and gets other little boys to follow his example: bad news. Even though the book was written over a hundred years ago, it still applies to reade...more
