Like Anita Shreve, Myerson writes in a literary and yet accessible manner. Her fifth book is a story of a troubled woman who falls for an outsider ... read full description

This novel is one that has stuck in my imagination long after I have read it. The plot is chilling and disturbing, beginning with the murder of an innocent woman - a wife, mother and member of the local community. The reader is made to contemplate the possibility of something terrible happening to them or someone they know, just as it happened to the ordinary woman in this story. The prose is concise but full of symbolism and small nuances of meaning and mood.

This book follows Tess and her family after the murder of her friend Lennie in a seaside town in the south east of Englnd. I found it to be a book that really draws you in and definitely made me feel that Tess was experiencing grief in a way that made sense to me. I found it difficult to put down. Even though it has the elements of a thriller it's certainly not of that genre and is much more about people and life and how it affects us when awful events happen that we are not prepared for. I foun More...

When a book is written without any speech marks - or indeed, any indication such as italics or line breaks or anything at all - it's sometimes confusing as to what it speech and what is thought especially when, as in Something Might Happen, the lead character is keeping secrets from her family. This was probably my biggest problem with this novel (and I see from other reviews here that I'm not alone!)

I didn't actively dislike this book but I thought I would like it more than I did. O More...

About two pages in, I realised with a sinking feeling that this is one of those books without speech marks. An increasingly common style gimmick, I agree it's very stark and direct, but it's also very difficult to read, particularly as the dialogue is of the 'warts and all' variety ('I went out'... 'where?'... 'just out'... 'oh'... 'what?'... 'oh'). Working out who is talking, whether it's talk or thought, reported speech etc all took time, and made it slow and troublesome. Plus the fact that th More...

Although the story revolves around the murder of a woman in a small town, it is not a mystery or thriller. It's more about how death transforms the lives of those who loved the deceased, and how little things people do - or don't do - can change a relationship. It's a very quick read, and I found that I had a hard time putting it down once I started.

There were times when I felt like I was holding my breath when I was reading this and I had to force myself not to let my eyes flick ahead. Tess's friend Lennie is brutally murdered and this is the story of the next few weeks. It is skilfully written and unbearably tense.

A very readable story. I've found it hard to put down. As the story unfolds you wonder exactly what it's all leading to...
Because it's been a library book the first page or two is misssing so I wonder about who the author is, I must google some info on her. She writes with a turn of phrase which seems American rather than English, or is this me because I've read it in Boston?

I really liked this book at the beginning and then the middle sort of dragged on and on, with nothing really happening. I also grew really tired of the way the dialogue was written. It seemed innovative at first, but eventually just felt weird. The end of the book was really powerful, but I'm not sure I buy it. It kind of feels like the author knew I was getting bored and created a situation to suck me back in. It worked, but it also pissed me off. The end is heart-wrenching, though.

A chilling novel about death and the impact a seemingly random murder has on a small community by the sea. I found it a real page turner and the narrative kept me gripped right to the uneasy end. It certainly reveals a much darker side to Southwold than the one the rest of us see on a summer's day!

well written, with a great understanding of the different thoughts and emotions that a violent death brings to those who love and care for the person. However it is not a light read and not one to be read if you are feeling emotional!

A surprisingly gruesome read in places but lacking as a complete work. The sheer number of times the author refers to how people smell will undoubtedly grate as will the total lack of indication of who is speaking. Tracking backwards in conversations to work out who is saying what isn't an adventurous presentational style, it's just kinda irritating.

Myerson traces the impact on close associates when an individual is murdered. The writing is crisp and insightful with an ending which is powerful. Yet, a strange decision in formatting the novel without clarifying speech and incidental thought makes this a difficult read and detracts from the quality of the writing.
