Evil Beside Her
Sleeping with a monster
At first, Linda Bergstrom's marriage to her husband James was idyllic. They were young and in love; he was about to enter the Navy and she was eager to start a family. But it wasn't long before the dream exploded. James became abusive and violent, prone to sudden bursts of anger, long silences, and unexplained disappearances. But Linda vowed to ho

Yes, I read another book by Kathryn Casey, OK? So I'm a masochist. This one is about a woman's efforts to stop her husband, a serial rapist, from continuing his crimes.
I don't know how she does it, but Casey is one of those rare authors who can take a suspenseful story and turn it into a crashing bore. It's a talent, I suppose. I think it would have been more interesting to read the Houston phone book, but I couldn't get my hands on one of those, so I had to settle for this.

Finishing this book feels like running a marathon...one of those fascinating criminal cases that is hard to wrap the head around for the sheer volume and chronology of crimes involved. What the people in this criminal's life had to tolerate, live with on a daily basis, and what some of them deliberately ignored is what I found most affecting because it rings true--human nature is simply that people don't see what they don't want to see even if it's right in front of them. The sheer amount of cou...more
While reading this book one wonders why this woman stayed with her abusive psychotic husband. She had warning signs of his psychosis early on. Yet she married him and stayed. She survived seven years with a madman. I wondered while reading this book the reasoning she used to endure the torment. As I got further into the book I felt it was the environment she grew up in. Her formative years was no different in theory than her adult years. When one is raised in the same environment that the...more
True crime is one of my favorite genres so I was disappointed by this book. It was very biased.
I felt like I was being bombarded with pro-Linda (wife of perpetrator) propaganda. I'm sure she was a major source of information for the book so the author may have felt some obligation to portray her in a favorable light. But, as a reader, I got annoyed at constantly hearing what a hero, saint, great mom, etc. she was. I didn't believe a word of it.

This was fairly average for true crime and about halfway through I realized I'd read about this case somewhere before. I still think the wife was very courageous and it's chilling to think there are people out there like Bergstrom.
Wonderful thing about this book: you can (if you agree with the author) write to officials and let them know that you believe the perpetrator of the crimes (heinous in my opinion) should not be paroled in the near future.
An easy true crime read. Enlightening on the struggles woman in abusive relationships face. I would have liked to know more about the rapist/husband's childhood and what led him to this personality.
Reads like an Ann Rule true crime book. Very good writing and insight into a depraved mind and the courage of a young wife to save her daughter from the husband who would harm their child.
I was given this book as a freebie by a co-worker. It reads like a lifetime movie if it had a love child with All My Children. Not a fan.
If you like true crime stories, you'll really like this book.
about a women married to a serial rapists and How she help put her husband behind bars.
Great book by a great author. James Bergstrom is one scary dude. Hope he never gets out of prison.
Not as good as I hoped it would be.
It felt like the author was constantly making excuses why the rapist wife stayed with her husband all those years and that started to get old very quickly.
Its not a bad book but I wish I would not have bought it, not worth 7 or 8 euros.

Not one of the better true crime books I have ever read.
