After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson is finding his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson, a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any normal friends. But things don't stay quiet...more

A guy in Greek armor drew his sword and charged, but slipped in a puddle of pina colada.

Really, who can not love a book with lines like that? I actually had the urge take this book in my hand with a strong grip and whirl it towards my head for waiting so long to read this series. I just kept putting it off for some reason or other. Luckily I came to my senses.

For the most part things have been pretty quiet this school year and Percy even makes a new friend named Tyson, a giant of a kid. Well,...more

I have to say this is my favorite book in the entire series. Wonderfully written and filled with new characters, The Sea of Monsters is a real page turner! Within the first three paragraphs, Riordan intordunces a funny new character: a friendly 8-year-old Cyclops named Tyson; son of Posiden!

The magical girl-who-became-a-pine-tree, Thailia, has been poisoned. The magical boundary that protects Camp Half-Blood is weakening, and deadly monsters attempt to wound the demigod boarder patrols as much a...more

Can you think of how to outdo the first book? Just think about it, in the first, Percy saved Zeus and Poseidon from being at war and involving all the other gods to take sides, therefore saving the world from WWIII. So how exactly do you out trump that? Well Percy and his friends have to find a way to save camp half-blood (the only place Percy has ever felt really at home) by finding the golden fleece in the most dangerous waters known to man and hero alike, the Bermuda triangle. I'd say that co...more

The Sea of Monsters in the second book in the Percy Jackson series and despite it's less than spectacular start, I'm pleased to say I enjoyed it just as much as the first one. Usually, I tend to find the second book in a series somewhat of a letdown. In a trilogy it's to be expected since it's the middle book but even in longer series I've always been somewhat letdown by the second offering in a series. Often the novelty of the first book has worn of, but the story hasn't gotten into it's stride...more

Oh, gee. I was kinda disappointed with this book. It just didn’t have, say, the… adventure (?) of the first book. It just wasn’t as attention-grabbing as it should’ve been. The plot was good, except the omnipresent action made it worse.

Wait, what? You may ask. There was plenty of action!

I don’t know, either. It was there, but it wasn’t either.

But a lot of people just dislike this book in the series. So did I. But the only thing is, I don’t understand why.

Still, it wasn’t that bad… just disappo...more

Another great addition to the Percy Jackson series!
"Sea of Monsters" isn't quite as elaborate as the first book - the adventures are a tad more linear and singular, but that doesn't really detract from what really is a "second installment" of a series. It's pretty obvious by this point that the books will continue for a while, and you aren't expecting the plot to be fully realized, explained, or finished, by the end of this book.

I think Riordan has stayed true to his characters in this second bo...more

I wasn't all that impressed with book (apologies to Karin who loves it). I liked the concept: young demi-god (hero) living in normal USA must venture into classical mythology (gateway fantasy) to get Golden Fleece (quest) and defeat the powers of evil (villain). So it's another herioc quest story (aren't all fantasy novels?). Despite its popularity with kids and the way it's revitalizing children's interest in Greek/Roman mythology, I found the characters inaccessible and the whole thing just to...more

This sequel to the 1st book is interesting enough, as I found myself on the sixth chapter of the book after barely 2 hours of reading. This book explains Percy Jackson, life after his sixth grade, he's almost finished school "normally" when he had this bad dreams about his close friend Grover and to make matter worst, received bad news from his mother that the Half Blood Camp was in trouble and Chiron advised him not to come for the summer. Attacked by monsters at school. Little by little the de...more

"...we were already underway, sailing into the Sea of Monsters."

The Sea of Monsters? Is there such a thing?

The Bermuda Triangle is a strange and mysterious place in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is roughly the shape of a triangle and it is said to have sucked planes and boats into its dark and murky waters. When some enter the waters of the triangle they disappear forever. No one knows what happened to the planes and boats. Thanks to Rick Riordan, he made an explanation. Bermuda Triangle is...more

Je to strašně čtivé a děj je úžasný!

I am currently reading The Sea Of Monsters by Rick Riordan. Camp half blood is under attack and the only way to save it is to get the golden fleece and it just so happens that his friend Grover is trapped in a place near the fleece.Percy and Annabeth set out their friend and the fleece. On the way they pass the sea of monsters, a horrifying place and they also see Luke . Luke is my least favorite character because he betrayed Percy and Percy trusted him. I would never betray my friends, because...more

the second adventure for percy and annabeth. i just like all the characters of this series! they are great developed and not very easily divided in good or bad (just like the greek gods, which is making them so human and interesting and likable). what i like most about this series is how the myths work and interfere with the real world, like Hermes inventing the internet. it actually is very easy to believe that all these creatures are somewhere in the world and we just can't see them. i really...more

Why is it that whenever I pick up a Rick Riordan book, I find myself completely speechless. I've no idea what to say about the second book of Percy Jackson, but what I do know is that I immensely enjoyed reading it.

For the most part, things have been pretty quiet this school year and Percy even makes a new friend named Tyson, a giant of a kid who, it turns out, is actually a Cyclops and a son of Poseidon. Anyway, soon enough, monsters come in and attack the gym during a game of dodgeball and cha...more

My Summary: After spending the year at yet another school, Percy Jackson is excited to go back to Camp Half-Blood. He's proud of myself for having made it through an entire year without any trouble - of the bully or mythological monster variety - but he's sad to be leaving his buddy Tyson - a six foot something sweetheart who gets bullied constantly for being a 'charity case'. Percy is his only friend, which (unfortunately) means Tyson is Percy's only friend.

On the last day of seventh grade, the...more

"Families are messy. Immortal families are eternally messy. Sometimes the best we can do is to remind each other that we're related for better or for worse...and try to keep the maiming and killing to a minimum."

*Truth be told, it’s no surprise that I wasn't hugely impressed with the first Percy Jackson book: The Lightning Thief but I did see its potential. It was entertaining, yes, but somewhat drawn-out, unoriginal and predictable. Well, with "Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters," I take it...more

I love books that the entire family can read and discuss together. Right along with the 1st Percy Jackson book, ‘The Sea of Monsters’ is superb! At our house, it’s a fight for the books since the series is so popular here.

The adventure and non-stop action continues. I love Percy. He might be half god but he is still half human too, because of this, we can all relate to him in ways.

Characters are solid and believable. New characters that are introduced move right into the story with ease.

I don't get it. I just don't really like this series. My two kids would argue to the death with me about them, and I don't know why I don't like them, I just...don't.

Maybe I don't like ancient Greeks mixing with 21st-century Americans. Maybe it's Annabeth's recurring refrain of "oh my gods" that drives me insane, or maybe it's the fact that you can't turn 3 pages without Percy being in mortal peril. (Too much adventure is bad for the heart.) Maybe I can't buy into so many perfectly-timed rescue...more

The Sea of Monsters was an amazing sequel to The Lightning Thief. In the beginning Percy goes back to Camp Half-blood and is miserable. He’s being teased about having a Cyclops brother and the new camp director is nothing but trouble. Then he and Annabeth determine a way to save the camp and then present it at dinner. The camp director thought it was great, unfortunately he granted permission for someone else to go on the quest and not Percy. But that didn’t stop him from sneaking out with his f...more

I read this book because I like greek stuff. Even though this book is fiction I really liked it. Percy is in New York at a camp called Camp Half-blood. Someone has poisened the tree that protects camp half bloods boarders. Chrion gets blamed so he got fired. Percy is the son of the sea god Poseidon. He is dylesic and has ADHD. Percy is having nightmares about his friend Grover at an island. He has no clue what it is but Grover asks percy to save him in the dream. Then Percy relizes that Grover i...more

Oh my dear..... *GASP** Alright. the review. XD Love these books. Riordan creates complex plots with interesting characters to teach kids abour Greek mythology. Amazing! The ending had me totally by surprise!! I recommend this book to kids learning how to read, those interested in Greek mythology, and those who love reading action-packed, gore-free childen's books! ^ ^

A good follow-up to what was an excellent start in the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series, merging ancient Greek mythology with modern-day protagonists.

This time, Percy has to go rescue his friend Grover, a satyr (not of the lascivious variety in this version) from a cyclops. All the while dealing with the traitor Luke, sirens, Circe, being turned into a rodent, and, oh yes, a half-brother he never knew he had: Tyson. Who also happens to be a cyclops.

It is a bit slower going than I woul...more

It is the first Percy Jackson and the Olympian Series that I’ve read. It’s the combination of modern and classical mythology, which triggered me to developed more interest in Greek mythology. I’ve learned plenty of awesome mythological creatures and monsters that Percy encountered through his adventure. This series is better than the Chronicles of Narnia, though I’m not yet finished with it. I never thought that the plot is a page-turner, exciting to read and doesn't have boring parts. I liked this one a lot. It was really good- not as good as the first book but still rather enjoyable. All the characters were much more developed in this one and I loved how silly some of the Gods were. The quest was intriguing and fast paced and kept me eager for more. I also thought Tyson was an excellent addition to the story and was a very enjoyable character. A really fun, easy read.

I am really loving this book! This book is sort of like the first one. It has the part when Anabeth, Percy, and Grover get stuck in the cosino. But Grover isn't at the casino. This time there at a hotel, Percy and Anabeth and they are stuck there for like a day in a half. then percy meats this lady named Circe. Circe makes him look into a mirror and when Percy does he sees a better him. Then Circe makes him drink a smoothie then the smoothi turns him into a guinea pig. But Percy wasn't the only...more

I read the entire series back-to-back, grateful that I didn't have to wait for the next installment to be published. Like the Harry Potter series I adored every book in this series. The characters, the world, the humor, the writing, the action... I just ate it up! If there were more I would be reading them. :)

I'm really loving this series, but it's very predictable and unfortunately Riordan does not seem to be enriching the world he created in successive books.

Well, almost more like 4.5 stars. The ending on this one really makes me crave the next installment. I'm not super into all the battles and fight scenes, I really struggle to put them all together in my head. I am totally into the development of the plot and the prophecy which may or may not involve Percy. Now, a big change up has happened with the introduction of something or someone at the end of the story. Can't wait to read #3.

“The real story of the Fleece: there were these two children of Zeus, Cadmus and Europa, okay? They were about to get offered up as human sacrifices, when they prayed to Zeus to save them. So Zeus sent this magical flying ram with golden wool, which picked them up in Greece and carried them all the way to Colchis in Asia Minor. Well, actually it carried Cadmus. Europa fell off and died along the way, but that's not important."
