Dead is a State of Mind is the second book in the Dead Is series that follows Daisy and her two sisters Poppy and Rose. In this one, Daisy is continuing her Junior year in high school after her very intense first semester (a.k.a Dead is the New Black). This time around there is a new mysterious guy in her school that claims he is a fortune teller and even though Daisy is no stranger to powers like that, since her family has more than one psychic. But for some reason Daisy doens't trus

Dead Is a State of Mind by Marlene Perez is a book mosstly about life and explain different problems. Each character is alittle different in a good way. Daisy Giordano is a teenager at Nigheshade High school. Dasiy has just met Dukker Sherrad he has one thick accent hes from Mexico. Dukker learns that he has a big crush on Dasiy. On page 38 "My psychic powers went wonky when i was understress." I chose this sentence beause Dasiy was having a hard time on figuring out what was going on with her. ...more
In this sequel to Dead is the New Black Daisy Giordano and her psychic sisters are back. Rose is dating a werewolf, Poppy falls for a ghost, and Daisy has problems of her own because as prom approaches Ryan hasn't asked her out yet. Worse than that, Ryan seems to be keeping secrets from her. When a teacher ends up dead, possibly a victim of a werewolf attack, Daisy jumps in to investigate, and finds out more than she bargained for.

I am part of's new Vine program. In exchange for reviewing products, I get stuff for free. One of my most recent picks was Marlene Perez's book Dead is a State of Mind. Unfortunately, this book had a few strikes against it right out of the box. The first being that I was not expecting a young adult book. The second strike was that this book was actually the second in a series (the first book is called Dead is the New Black).

While I thought the title was amusing and could almost get pa

Let me just say, that I am indeed part of the crowd that LOVED Twilight! That said, when I was at the bookstore one day, the DEAD IS… books were right next to the Twilight display. They looked short and had snazzy (yes, I actually said snazzy) titles. Therefore, I picked up all of them. After reading the first two chapters of the first book, I knew this was for young teenagers. In fact, I just happened to look at the back of the book and in small text above the ISBN it clearly states, 12+. I act ...more

This was an amazing book that you have to read.

This book has many secrets that Daisy does not know, but will figure out.

There's a gorgeous new guy at Nightshade High: Duke Sherrad, a fortune-teller claiming to have descended from Gypsies. Even though she's psychic herself, Daisy is skeptical of Duke's powers. But when a teacher who was the subject of one of his predictions ends up dead, she begins to wonder if Duke is the real deal after all.
Maybe if Daisy can track down the teacher's killer, s
Soooo, I've read the second book in this series because I bought it, thankfully for only $1, not realizing it was for YA or a series. I borrowed the first one from the library.

I gave the first book, "Dead is the New Black" a 1 star. This one is no better, actually I think it's worst because the main character, Bella, opps, I mean, Daisy, basically just whines the whole 175 pages about her boyfriend, Ryan. She thinks he likes another girl, though it's pretty obvious what is exactly going on with

such a good book!
I actually do like this series. I quite enjoy it actually. "Dead Is a State of Mind" is a pretty good sequel to "Dead Is the New Black". It's a quick, easy read that can be easily finished in one sitting. I find that I mostly read books for the simple fact that I want to be entertained, and this book definitely accomplished that. Although I can't exactly justify a four or five star rating, on the simple fact that the twists aren't twisted enough, and it's pretty simple to figure out the Who, Wha ...more

This is yet another little gem from Marlene Perez. Daisy Giordano is back with a new set of problems. Being a teenager is hard enough, but Daisy also has to deal with her growing supernatural powers. She can read people’s minds and move objects just by thinking about it. I have to admit I wish I had that power when it was time to cook dinner! Daisy is happy about her gifts since it helps her fit in with her talented mother a

Delightful second book in the "Dead Is" comic, paranormal, mystery series for teens

Daisy Giordano and her friends and family are back for a second, fun-filled paranormal adventure in the wacky town of Nightshade, in Northern California.

A beloved teacher from Daisy's school, Nightshade High, has been savagely killed, and the signs point to a werewolf as the murderer. The secret, supernatural "Council" that rules over the magical citizens of Nightshade is on red alert, determined to figure out if

This review is from: Dead Is a State of Mind (Paperback) YA FICTION

The minute I opened this book I was transported back to the days when I first was reading The Adventures of the Bailey School Kids (Volume 1)which probably has about 50 titles in the series right now. Those books were about kids living in a town where all sorts of characters were imagined to be anything from werewolves to vampires to other various ghosts

Prom is only weeks away, and Ryan still hasn’t asked Daisy to go with him. Daisy is beginning to worry, but her best friend Samantha Devereaux insists that Ryan will come through eventually. Meanwhile, a ghost is terrorizing Mort’s Mortuary. When the Giordano sisters go to investigate, the ghost turns out to be a passed high school student, who just isn’t ready to die just yet. Poppy immediatly warms up to the ghost and begins to trust him, even though he’s dead. Rose and Daisy warn her

Another fast and entertaining read. Things in the weird-but-not-entirely malevolent town of Nightshade continue apace when a mysterious new student arrives at school, claims to be a fortune-teller, and sets his sights in an obsessive fashion on our spunky protagonist, Daisy Giordano; her sister Poppy falls for a ghost; her boyfriend Ryan is being mysteriously elusive; and her long-lost father may possibly be trying to reach them. The book is fast-paced, well-written, and stocked with believable, ...more

The second entry in the Dead is the... was just as good as the first, maybe a little bit better. I have recommended this to all my friends who have 11-12 year old daughters that aren't enjoying the Twilight series. This story about Daisy and her two sisters, Poppy and Rose solving a paranormal mystery should appeal to that age group. I love recommending books like this that have no drug or major sexual situations to younger readers.

The characters are quite believable even in the paranormal realm

I would recommend the book Dead is a State of Mind by Marlene Perez to a friend because is was very suspenseful and scary and fast paced. I think that this book is very suspenseful because in one part Daisy is following Duke and then this happens; “He pulled a gun from his jacket...then daisy says “Let her go, or I swear I’ll shoot. (page 153)” When I read this part of the book I didn’t know what was going to happen and I just wanted to find out what happens. Also an example of when the book is ...more
I don't think this book is a life-changer in any huge undeniable gigantic way. So I guess I should explain my 4 stars.
The cover on the book is beautiful. I know, you're probably thinking "WHAT? It's alright, but...beautiful is a stretch." It's not, it's really really not. More often than not covers reveal to much. Not enough. Are trying to much. Have really nice seperate components, but clash when put together. This book had none of that! It had a logical, intriguing title that just can't hel
Welcome to book two in the Dead Is, series! And what a book it was. It clearly wasn't a case of second-book-in-a-series-syndrome, thank lord. Always afraid to read a second book, I had a few series where the first book was just awesome, but the second book sucked hard, and thus I dropped it.

We got 3 new characters here, Duke and Elise, and Gage. One is a fortune-teller (or so he says), one is (view spoiler) and one is (view spoiler)

Dear Charan,
I read a book called Dead Is a State of Mind by Marlene Perez which is a work of fantasy/mystery.
There's a new kid in NightShade high named Duke Sherrad,a fortune teller "descended from gypsies" but Daisy is doubtful about his powers. But when a teacher ends up dead, that Duke predicted will get hurt, Daisy begins to think that Duke might be the real deal after all. Daisy is determined to find out who killed the teacher. daisy and ryan aren't doing so good and daisy thinks that he
Review: Daisy Giordano has even more problems now. Her psychic powers are iffy at best and a teacher has been recently murdered. Even worse yet, a new student, Duke predicted the murder. Daisy wants to solve the case but she is having relationship troubles and troubles with family. Will Daisy get everything straightened out so she can solve this mystery?

Dead Is a State of Mind is a light, fast-paced supernatural mystery for teens. It's set in a world where the paranormal exists in a half-open, half-concealed way; from what I gather, pretty much everyone knows vampires, weres, etc. are out there, but many of the individual vampires, weres, etc. are in the closet. There are aspects of it that I enjoyed a great deal (I love the jukebox!), but overall, Dead wasn't quite my cup of tea.

For starters, when I say the pace is fast, I mean I should have

DEAD IS A STATE OF MIND by Marlene Perez is the second book in the "Dead" series. Ryan and Daisy are in an akward stage in their relationship. Ryan has been kind of mysterious lately and Daisy knows something is up. She is especially suspicious when she sees him hanging out with the new girl, Elise Wilder, on multiple occasions. It is almost prom and Ryan still hasn't asked Daisy yet, but that hasn't stopped Daisy's old/new best friend, Samantha Devereaux, to convince Daisy to be on the prom com ...more
Second novel of the Dead is series, is a more tolerable book than its previous book.

Quite well, she ties the knot at the end neatly but not entirely satisfactorily. As the first book, the final sequence when she uncovers the villain there's no such action. It lacks more fighting or something. I mean isn't she a psychic after all.

Why do authors always torture us with wimpy, fussy female characters. Cough* BELLA Cough* Daisy has grown from being on my bad side to my blacklist of fem
I really enjoyed the first book in this series(Dead Is The New Black) and was anxious to move onto the second and I'm so glad I did. This series so far has just been a lot of fun to read. Daisy is such a great teenager to read about mostly because, for the most part she acts like a teenager. Duke Sherrad shows up at Nightshade High and instantly sets his sights on Daisy. This definitely causes some teenage male jealousy for Ryan, Daisy's best friend gone boyfriend. Of course Daisy is feeling mor ...more

Sixteen-year-old Daisy Giordano has a lot on her plate. Prom season is upon her, but her best-friend-recently-turned-boyfriend Ryan Mendez hasn't asked her to go yet. Worse, he's been hanging around with the new girl in school an awful lot. It's bad enough Daisy's dad disappeared, her psychic powers aren't as well-developed as those of her mother and sisters, there's a ghost haunting the town's funeral parlor, and the new guy at school (a Gypsy fortune teller) seems to be following Daisy whereve ...more

If zero is the normal setting on the weird-o-meter, than on any given day Nightshade, California registers somewhere around a five. It's hard for a town that harbors a secret sub-community of werewolves, vampires, witches and assorted other paranormals to avoid being a little strange. And that's okay with Daisy Giordano. She grew up in Nightshade and, although she's not paranormal herself, she has powerful psychic abilities - mind-reading and telekinesis, to be exact. In fact, all of the women i ...more

Our protagonist is 17 year old Daisy Giordano, one of the famous Giordano family members who are psychics, mind readers, and have the ability to use telekinesis.
