Mulisch legt den Psychoanalytiker Wilhelm Reich auf die Couch und findet heraus, dass all seine Theorien über die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung des Orgasmus aus Reichs verdrängten Trauma resultieren: Als Kind verriet er dem Vater, dass seine Mutter ihn betrog, was zum Selbstmord der Mutter und dem Tod des Vaters führte. So sagt der Ich-Erzähler an einer Stelle ganz klar, dass Psychoanalytiker zwangsläufig immer verrückter als ihre Patienten sind.

Harry Kurt Victor Mulisch along with W.F. Hermans and Gerard Reve, is considered one of the "Great Three" of Dutch postwar literature. He has written novels, plays, essays, poems, and philosophical reflections.
