For centuries, the werewolves of Toronto have managed to live in peace and tranquility, hidden quietly away on their London, Ontario farm. But now, someone has learned their secret—and is systematically massacring this ancient race.
The only one they can turn to is Henry Fitzroy, Toronto-based vampire and writer of bodice rippers. Forced to hide from the light of day, Henry...more

~THE WEREWOLVES OF LONDON (ONTARIO)~
BLOOD TRAIL is the second book in the thoroughly enjoyable Blood (Ties) series. This book begs the question, is it worse when the vampires are actually having sex or when it's all repressed smoldering eye action?
I really never thought I'd be asking myself that question. But here we are, book two of another vampire series, and (I suppose this is a SPOILER), the vampire has sex, with a human, and we get to hear about it. Maybe it's just me but the whole sex/violence/death combination is unappealing in the extreme. Am I sounding like I prude? I don't mean to. I was okay with t...more

The second book concerning Vicki Nelson, private investigator, and Henry Fitzroy, vampire and illegitimate son of Henry VIII.
The novel opens with Vicki accepting an invitation to Henry's place to talk about a possible new case. We have moved on a few months since the first book, with the flirting and dating between Vicki and Henry ramping up a notch. The new case involves a pack of werewolves leaving near London, Canada, who are being picked off one by one by a rather talented marksman.

Blood Trail starts a few months after Blood Price ends. Vicki and Henry have been seeing each other, seemingly romantically. Vicki’s vision has gotten worse. Mike Celluci is still suspicious of Henry and has begun his own investigation into Henry’s past. Otherwise, they’ve been living relatively calm lives in Toronto.
Henry receives a visit from the children of an old friend who own a sheep farm in London, Ontario. They’re werewolves and two members of their pack have been killed. Naturally, goin...more

This is the second in this series that I've read. The premise is good, although I must admit that I'm rather tired of the worn out vehicle that is too commonly used of "police, detective, private investigator" etc. as the excuse for the mystery. It's been done to death and this series doesn't really bring anything new to the equation.
I enjoyed the werewolves in this book. They seemed much more pack centric in terms of their behavior than most books in the genre I've read. I got the sense that I...more

I was on the fence of who the bad guys were but I did have it narrowed down to two when their characters were introduced, so pat myself on the back. I like that the heroine isn't perfect. Towers over most men, including one of her love interests, and is slowly losing her sight.
This story was good and for having been published in 1992, is probably at the beginning of the werewolf/vampire craze. This book has both. A very small amount of romantic encounters. Most of the fade-to-black kind with lo...more

I didn't like this one as much as the first but I gave it the same rating because it wasn't bad. I almost wish their was a separate rating system for the "good trash."
I got this whole series in omnibus editions at half-price books for a dollar each and it has been a fun read so far. I do have a soft spot for this genre, so I tend to rate it higher than it probably deserves. I prefer Vickie to other UF heroines, she isn't as much of a Mary Sue, and she's funny at times. Vicki Nelson, Henry Fitzroy, and Mike Celluci return for another mystery, this time set in the London, ON countryside and concerning a family of werewolves that are being murdered by a mysterious assassin. Huff does a fantastic job making her wer feel distinct; rather than people that turn into wolves, they are wer -- their own type of creatures with their own sets of values. Though the writing still lacks a certain level of polish, the characters driving the story can't help but fascinate and d...more

Those Who Love Dark and Urban Fantasy
Somewhere in the course of this novel it occurred to me why I became so attached to this series; it all has to do with an old television series--not the one adapted directly from Huff's, which I've never seen. Rather, this reminds me strongly of Forever Knight, a series about a centuries old Vampire, Nick Knight on the Toronto police force. In a way Huff one ups that old series--Henry Fitzroy isn't merely a knight. He's based on a real historical figure, the illegitimate son of Henry VIII of Eng...more

Over the centuries of his existence as a vampire Henry Fitzroy had acquired some very unusual friends, including a family of werewolves who had peacefully coexisted for generations with ordinary humans. But now someone had learned their secret and was determined to destroy them all. Henry was the only one they could turn to for help. But, forced to hide from the light of day, Henry couldn’t hunt down the killer alone. So he called upon his partner in supernatural crime solving, private...more

Very slow moving. I enjoyed this book more than the first book as I felt that the characters were more fully developed But that isn't saying much! Vicki and Henry become more three-dimensional and the werewolves are very entertaining to read about. The twins, Peter and Rose, and Daniel, their younger cousin, provide touches of humor and playfulness to the plot.

Blood Trail has Henry asking Vicki for help, regarding an unusual, often recluse family. It appears they are being picked off one by one.
Mike has a bee in his bonnet regarding Henry & decides to do some investigating into his past. Not that he's jealous or anything (um yeah right..).
Huff certainly knows her craft.Just to add I like that both books are written in the third person, you get in to everyones head, even the antagonist, TH does this really well, adding flashbacks of Henry's previ...more

I mannari ha...more
This is the second novel from Tanya Huff's Blood Ties series, and it keeps getting better and better (guess it usually works that way!). I'm glad I just watched season 2 of the Blood Ties television series, because this book mirrored one of the episodes within that season (I love comparing the details between the two!). Blood Trail takes Vicky Nelson and Henry Fitzroy to London, Ontario to track down the cold blooded killer murdering family members living on a farm there. However, the family mem...more
After reading blood Price, the first book in the Blood series, I was iffy as to whether or not to continue reading the rest of the series. I was turned on to the tv series before I read any of the books, so I knew what was going to happen and was angry when I noticed that the outline I had from the tv show differed from the books. I'm so glad I kept on reading though! The books are so much more satisfying to me, as a reader, the the show was (especially since the show was cancelled and ended on...more
this book gets 4 stars just for the amazing way she describes the werewolves and their family setting. I loved their very dog-like personalities and descriptions of wanting to ride shotgun so you can put your head out the window, and frog chasing had me cracking up. The fact that the wolves could change easily at will and not just the torturous full moon routine was refreshing. If I was to be a werewolf this is the kind that I'd want to be.

Toronto, August 1991.

This is the second Vicky Nelson book I've read and have to say that I didn't think it was as good as the first. Throughout the first half of the book, Mike and Henry were barely mentioned. One of the reasons I enjoyed the first book so much was because of the dynamics between all three leading characters. Missed it this time. Had plenty of Vicky present, but got a little tired of all the werewolf stuff. Not only that, but I found the cast confusing - each werewolf had a 'wolf' name plus a 'human...more
2 stars means OK. Essentially a murder mystery involving a secret "wer" community in Canada. The PI is a retired cop who is suffering from a degenerative eye disease and can't see at night. She must depend on her relationship with a 450 year old vampire lover who sees very well at night to help her solve the mystery. To complicate things, her x-cop partner wants to claim her as his love interest so the story has its triangle elements. Besides that, the writing moves to different points of view i...more

Crazy end of semeser frenzy = fun detective & vampire book.
As I noted on the first book, this is the kind of literary equivalent of kettle chips--very little nutritional value but hard to put down. This 2nd installment of the series finds Vicki and Henry helping out a pack of werewolves outside of London (Ontario, that is). Turns out Henry isn't the only supernatural game in town. Someone is killing pack members in wolf form--picking them off at isolated moments and the pack turns to Henry...more

The story in and of itself was decent, I just don't know why the author had to push on so many gray area topics, I have 2 that bugged me.
1st - Henry is already sleeping/drinking from a male kid we see in the first book that Viki plays almost a parental role in his life...yet when Viki finds out she doesn't freak out or anything, it is all just very disconcerting.
Then, the whole issue with Peter and Rose, the author kept alluding to the fact that they might get together despite them being sibling...more

The second book in the Blood books series by Tanya Huff, Vicki Nelson is asked by one of her sometime lovers, Henry Fitzroy, to help discover who is killing off his friends family members. Because this family are werewolves and are in hiding from the rest of the world, they can't go to the police with the problem. With Henry working as her partner during the night, since her retinitis pigmentosa leaves her with little to no night sight, she travels into the countryside to help out. Her other som...more
I actually liked this book better than the first one. The wer family was likable and it was easy to sympathize with their being victimized by an unknown assailant. Vicki's glasses are still problematic but either the author is mentioning it less or I'm getting used to reading about them constantly slipping down her nose.
Her cop boyfriend could use an attitude adjustment but I don't like pushy guys and others may find him less offensive. He's starting to get a clue as to Henry's persona and I'm...more

Could not find Blood Ties, picked up Blood Trail and am starting from this one. So far, I have to say that Tanya Huff and JD Robb have one thing in common: POV-intrusion. If the scene is being written from Vicki's POV, I don't appreciate having Henry-POV or Celucci-POV in the middle of the scene. The closest way I can think of to excuse this is that she's using 3rd-omni POV, which is not my preferred POV when reading.
