In her novels, Duong Thu Huong makes the case for turn of Vietnamese fiction on the world stage, no small feat from a country where the government is still in name Marxist and in practice not noted for tolerance. It's not impossible; witness the consistent miracle of Iranian cinema. Ho Anh Thai's "The Women on the Island" makes a counter-argument.
