I guess I'm in the minority because I loved this movie, and that's really the only reason I decided to read the book. I usually stay as far away from chick lit as possible because I don't like this genre at all. I can never get through a book from it without experiencing some of the most intense feelings of irritation and anger that I've ever experienced while reading. This one was no exception.

Jennifer Weiner's strength is in her characterizations. She makes you want to get to know the people she describes, particularly the heroines of her novels. Her heroines are not perfect, physically, or emotionally, and so many of us can relate.

i can't help it. i'm a sucker for chick lit. i found this at a book sale for $0.75, so even if it were awful, i would be down <$1 and i would have helped the contra costa county public library system. what the heck, right? so i read it. i laughed, i cried, i skimmed, i sighed, i squealed, i rolled my eyes. i used this as my breakfast accompaniment. during this book's tenure as my literary entertainment, i also baked a lemon-blueberry loaf cake and a walnut tart. if you've watched the ...more

Eh. I didn't really know if I should have given this two or three stars, but I finally settled on two. It's a good plane read, and so probably also a good beach/pool read, but not an anywhere else read. I got this on sale for a dollar, which was a good price to pay for it. It's not a full price book, but possibly maybe a half price.

Eh. So I like the writing style, but there were a lot of plotholes in this one. Where did Maggie's motivation to turn over a new leaf originate? Was it the poetry? What about the poetry? So the slime ball Rose is dating at the office is a sex addict? Okay... we only get like a paragraph to establish that and that was only to set the stage for what happens later. Nothing else about it. And, Rose isn't even dating him for real, which makes her character even more lame because she takes the...more

I was waiting for my friends at the movies when I discovered the nearby chapters had an extra 20% off sale for irewards members. I did not have a whole lot of money in the bank but I ended up going through the bargain bins and getting about 7 books for around $50. Overall it was a good day. In Her Shoes was one of the books I got. I have seen the movie several times and I really enjoy it. I thought this book was just okay. My biggest problem is I couldn't get over how much Maggie got on my nerves. Yes, I know she had issues with her learning disability and her mother dying, but that can't be an excuse for everything. She gave away her sister's Nine West boots to some girl she didn't even know at an audition!!! That's practically blasphemous, borderline crazy behavior. As a sister, I would never do that! Jennifer Weiner can write funny passages. There's the 80-something woman who uses her new computer to print fake parking permits. The fussy pug that prefers more elegant surroundings. Maggie's attempt to get into the MTV VJ auditions. I did grin a few times while reading this book.

I loved this book! It's very long but a quick read. She does a fantastic job of breaking up the book; some chapters are only 3-4 pages long.
I loved how the author told the story from different people's perspectives. It gave me a better sense and feeling of the entire situation and what each person was thinking which in turn helped show you why they did what they did.
This book made me smile, be sad and feel what the characters were feeling.

I love Jennifer Weiner. I just got another copy of her book Goodnight Nobody which I lost in the middle of reading last summer and my sister gave me Little Earthquakes to read and it was all I could do not to read three of her books in a row. She's got such a great writing style that pulls you in and keeps you interested. I know I'll always win with a Jennifer Weiner book.

i saw the movie before i read the book so most of it was spoiled for me. only a few parts were omitted and those were the best parts to read; the movie stays true to the book. i've read two novels by jennifer weiner and didn't want to put either of them down. her prose flows very smoothly and draws you into the characters' thoughts. there is no omnipotent narrator but the 1st person point of view that she provides from the main characters gives the reader information that the different characte...more

I like Jennifer Weiner. I like her solid writing and the way she develops her characters. I appreciate that she handles dialog well and that she carefully paints a picture for the reader.
That being said, this book is not great literature. Some have called this book "formulaic", "predictable", "chick lit"... it is all of those things. I guess I was hoping for more. I am giving it 3 stars since Weiner's skill allows the reader to just relax and enjoy a story, unfe...more

I saw the movie before reading this book. My mother passed it onto me and as my more intellectual book that I was starting to read didn't seem to grab my attention in the 10 minutes I had each day, I decided to read a more lazy book.

I picked this up on a whim. I enjoyed the movie and thought I might like the book as well (having friends who have enjoyed it.) Great vacation read. If you are attached to the way the plot goes in the movie then you probably shouldn't read the book. However, I enjoyed the differences between the two and enjoyed seeing that they were able to make the same things happen even when they used different circumstances to get there. I had to put back a book recently over that -- Moving right along -- its a quick-moving book and I read it in a few sittings. I saw this movie about a couple of years ago, and the friend I borrowed this book from said it was enough time in between to have a fair assessment of both mediums. I remember enjoying the movie and the book did not disappoint. I read Good in Bed nearly three years ago and it took me a while to get into it, but the last half I sped through. The funny thing is the cameo the main characters (and dog!) from Bed have in this book....a neat little tie-in. Anyway, I think this is a great story abo...more

Maybe there was too much sex or scandal, but I didn't find myself endeared to the characters. The story and writing are alright, about appreciating your sisters, but the inconsistencies of character, plot holes, and shock value ruined it for me. I loved the book and the movie was cute also. Having a sister, I hoped this story spoke to me. It didn't really because I couldn't quite relate to these two sisters, but I could understand the struggles between them: one being the free spirit and the other WANTING to be more of a free spirit but knowing she needed to be the responsible grown up. Maggie annoyed me, and reminded me a lot of my two older siblings, which made this book extremely hard for me to continue reading. She was rude, and never cared about anyone but herself. She seemed to think that her behavior was justified because of some things she went through as a kid.
