I enjoyed SCAT as I did the first two of Hiassen's kid books and I'm sure kids are going to enjoy it too. Florida, school story, spunky kids, endangered animals (even more, a baby endangered animal), creepy bad guys who deserve all they get, moving parents --- a very nice package indeed.
I'm a fan of Hiaasen's adult books and feel he is now getting more and more into the groove of writing for children as distinct from writing for adults. I liked FLUSH better than HOOT and like SCAT about the sam...more

All the students at Truman School fear Mrs. Starch, she’s strict, mean and intimidating. No one would dare to challenge her, no one except Duane Scrod Jr. (also known as Smoke). Duane is a troubled kid, an outsider by choice. He has a reputation for setting fires on public property, hence the nickname Smoke. One day during Mrs. Starch’s biology class, Duane and the teacher butt heads. And the next day, Duane doesn’t show up for the class field trip to the Black Vine Swamp.

It all happened the day Mrs. Starch vanished. That day was when all her students went quiet in astonishment, just because of a bitten pencil, that’s when everything went wrong. The next day was the field trip, that’s when flashes of heat where burning up and everybody got out except one very important person. Everybody kept searching for her, but nobody could find her, some people said she was dead some said she had a family emergency, but nobody really knew. There would be only two kids on the...more

Imagine you are on a field trip and you are having a great time, but all of the sudden you hear shots and a loud screeching that pierces your ear. A massive wildfire breaks out. While everyone is loading back onto the buses, your teacher goes back into the swamp to get a student's inhaler, not knowing that she wouldn't be coming out? So Ms. Starch went back to retrieve it. The clock was ticking but she never came out. The children and the teachers were getting nervous. The next day she had a substitute. Nick and Marta were being nosey so they went to Ms. Starch house. When they got there they got a big shock. Nick had a lot on his mind. He was worr...more
Scat is a great book. Scat is like a black hole it sucks you into the book like when a boy named Nick found out his father got his arm blown off in Iraq, or when Nick was in the tree trying to get the baby panther to its mother and Martha was brave when she saw a man Martha said, "don’t take another step closer or I'll shoot. The book Scat is a good book once you read the first chapter you won't want to put the book down. The book is about a boy named Nick found out that his father's arm got blo...more
Scat is an intriguing book. It has 5 main characters. They are Nick, Marta, Smoke, Twilly, and Mrs.Starch.This book has action. It also has mystery and drama. The students are very brave. The teacher is also brave. At the beginning Nick and Marta are in Mrs. Starch’s class. They are asked questions about science. Mrs. Starch asks Marta a question. Marta does not know the answer. She wishes someone could save her. Think she will survive. Mrs. Starch is taking the students on a field trip. They ar...more
Scat lets just say it was a pretty good book!!! Scat is about this boy named, Nick who is on a mission with his friend named, Marta to find his teacher, Ms.Starch. I don’t think they know what they are in for but I can’t give out too much. Nick also has another life other than helping his teacher and the environment. His dad is in Iraq fighting for our country, when Nick gets some good news and bad. It’s pretty shocking what Nick goes through. So that’s the good review the bad thing what I reall...more

On my opinion, I like how Carl Hiaasen puts teenagers in the story and that they always have problems with people that don’t care about environment or the things living on that part of land. And that he always leaves you hanging at the end of the chapter, which makes you want to read the next chapter. But on the other hand it's not the same as Hoot, Flush, and Chomp. Because Scat doesn't have a bully and that there isn’t much action in it. In most of the books the bullies threaten the teenagers...more
Carl Hiaasen Is A Great Author I if You Like Hoot Or Flush You Would Love This, This Book Is Great For Young & Older People. The Scene Is Florida (Like Always); The Characters Are Nick, Mrs.Strach, and Willy & Smoke etc. The Story Is Adventures. At The Beginning You Might THINK You Know The Ending But You Are Going To Be Shocked At The Ending Like I Was. The Ending Is Always Great. Hope You Take My Advice And READ SCAT c:
i think scat was a good book because well let me just tell u thers a girl named marta boy named nick there a teacher named mrs.starch. well mrs.starch is a biliogy teacher. one day they went on a field trip wen all out of the blue well youl have to figure it out what happens next. then theres an oil company called red dimond inderstes and they were ileagy drilling on a nature persive. well that all i can tell u have fun reading
Carl Hiaasen has written another good environmental book. My only complaint is that it every book seems to follow the same pattern. The main character is some kid who accidentally gets involved in some issue and helps another person whose idea of saving the environment is pulling pranks on those who are committing environmental crime. This person is always elusive, dangerous and never wants credit. It was pretty good in general though.

This author never fails to amuse. That said, I think Flush is my favorite of the 3 YA books. I'll have to wait and get a review from my YA child. I think this book is one of those that could guide the formative morality of young people.
Summary: Nick and Marta—not to mention everyone else at school—hate their biology teacher, Mrs. Starch. But when Mrs. Starch disappears during a school field trip and nobody seems all that concerned, Nick and Marta realize it’s up to them to find her.
Review: I liked Hoot and Flush, but I never really got into Hiaasen’s latest middle-grade novel. It could be that I’m getting pickier as I refine my YA-wannabe reading skills.
Things I didn’t like:
* Flat characters—Nick never came to life for me, an...more

Whenever I'm tempted to give an imperfect book less than 5 stars, I remember I should be grading on a curve--after all, I've only read a handful of "perfect" books! And Scat, with its minor imperfections, is still fantastic compared to most children's adventure books out there.
This is Hiassen's third book for children, and I thought it read a little more YA than the first two. (If you've read any of the author's anarchical, comical books for grown-ups, you know he has to pull his punches when wr...more

Scat is sort of a comic thriller for kids. Hiaasen is up to his usual, with just slightly absurd characters and situations overlying a serious message about ecology and conservation. Except "message" isn't the right word, because he's not preaching. He's just presenting interesting and sometimes likeable characters who care about Florida's wilderness and wildlife (I haven't encountered any of his books that aren't about Florida).

Scat, a book written by Carl Hiaasen, was a very exciting book. I loved this book! With every chapter came a new mystery and action. The genre of this book is fiction, even though throughout the book it seemed real to me. The author used great details and description of the scene, which helped me visualize what was going on. I recommend this book to anyone who shall desire to read it. It was a very good book that would hook you into the book so you would read more. Throughout the book there was...more

Along the way, the reader meets some larger than life, and sometimes a little scary, characters.
