I picked this up as an Advanced Reader's Edition at San Diego Comic-Con, so note that my review may not reflect the final printed edition of the book.

Judging by the cover I thought I was getting an occult story with a female lead along the lines of all the witch and vampire stories out there which often include themes of romance and school drama (Twilight, for example)
However, the story, while occult, was definitely not about romance and was firmly set in the horror genre - not a bad thin...more

Regina Halloway loves scary stories. She reads them compulsively--she even works in a horror book store. Sometimes, she thinks she might be reading them to distract her from the truly scary things in her life--like the fact that her mom ran out on them, and they haven't heard from her in over a year, or the fact that her father is more and more distant every day. Or the fact that she is singlehandedly raising her little brother, Henry.

But mostly, Reggie just reads horror because she loves...more

This is an extremely well written horror story that kept me cringing and reading late into the night. It concerns Regina and her younger brother Henry, who has become possessed by a demon-like entity called a Vour. Adults are pretty much absent in the picture (with one mysterious exception), so it's up to Reggie to figure out how to save her brother. This is one creepy book, and it leaves plenty of leeway for this to turn into a series. Yes, there's even a clown involved (ugh!). I'd liken ...more

This felt like I'd read it before - or something very like. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but the concept of the Vours and the way Reggie battled them just felt... not new. Maybe I've watched too much Buffy or read too many of these books to get terrified by something that seems to be an invading army of Fear Incarnate. It's a book I'll recommend to my students who love horror (and it'll probably satisfy the girls who aren't all that excited about Darren Shan's seri...more

While I'm too much of a scaredy-cat to actually sit down and read this book, I've been present at it's creation and know the story well. It just got its first review yesterday and I loved the phrase "a Sygian carnival"

This is how Kirkus summed it up. "A scary yarn spun at breakneck speed, perfect for
those chilly winter nights."

I didn't finish this book. I got to the point where I was avoiding the book because I was not enjoying it at all. So some friends say, do what Nancy Perl said, read the 1st 50 pages and if you don't like it, STOP!

This is a creepy tale of a girl who finds out she accidently unleased something sinister by reading from a book she found.

Some of the descriptions are very intense and scary. A must read for horror fans.
