What I learned from this book: That just because you usually like an author , there's no guarantee you will like everything they write. Gah, this was AWFUL. Jennifer Crusie's books are usually funny and sexy and a pleasure to read.
The UMF was just embarrassing. It reminded me of the bodice ripper books I used to read back in Junior High, only worse, because I expected more. It's full of instant panty-melting lust at first sight, bad dialogue and every romance novel cliche you can th More...

I found this book at my local thrift store for 50 cents and wondered why I hadn't known of its existence. I believed it to be an anthology at the time, but quickly found out that it's one book written by three women! Of course, the names Crusie and Stuart were the ones that attracted me. When I looked the book up on Amazon I was surprised to see that not many people liked it. Well, that's never stopped me before and I'm glad it didn't this time. I really liked it! Instead of taxing my brain

Meh...
I was a bit disappointed with this one...
In the end, I finally just skimmed the final chapters just to be done with it. I ADORE Jennifer Cruise and was so excited for this one! I thought the concept was interesting and also the subject matter (I'm a sucker for witch stories, after all) but I thought the 3 sisters were lame and boring and way to hung up on their issues...the guys were not quiver worthy and to top it all off, I felt like I had to keep re-reading the first few ch More...

Terrible! Hated it! Selfish, rude, lying, unpleasant women.
This book was full of repetitive conversations as if the authors needed filler material. Dee kept saying "we must leave." Mare repeatedly gets mad at Crash saying "you've been gone for five years." I did not like the way Lizzie told Elric to leave her forever. Then as soon as he was gone she cried because she missed him and didn't want him to leave. The plot was stupid. Guilty pleasure. That would be the tag I would put on this book. Additional tags would be “sexy romance”, “paranormal romance” and “fantasy fiction”. I read this book a couple of years ago. The title caught my eye when I spied it on a book shelf in a store somewhere. I read the story summary on the back of the book and it tickled my reading fancy at the time. I have to say I probably should have investigated it more in depth before I started reading it. There is something to be said for h

I love and adore Jennifer Crusie and I’m usually in line to purchase her books on the day they come out but I waited to buy this and I’ll tell you why: I’m not a fan of books that are written by more than one author and I’m not a huge fan of anthologies. I had never read anything by Anne Stuart and I had never even heard of Eileen Dreyer, so I decided to wait a while until I had some extra money.[return][return]I’m sorry that I was so quick to judge — this is a very fun and fast-paced novel, one

This is the story of the magical Fortune sisters, each with a gift. Dee, the eldest, is a shapeshifter. Lizzie, the middle sister, transmutes things, and Mare, the youngest, can move things with her mind. For the past 12 years, they have lived a nomadic life, fleeing when their powers drew attention, or when their aunt Xantippe found them. After Xan murdered their parents, Dee took her sisters and fled, hiding out in small towns. Now, their aunt has found them again, only she has also sent

Cute little romance. It was written in the round by three different authors, and you can see the strengths and weaknesses of this method quite clearly in the book.
But, it was fun. And I read it twice. The characters are awesome. Plus, there are some laugh-out-loud funny scenes.

This book is worth reading just for Mare/Crash (Mare runs a quirky branch of Value Video!!, has telekinetic powers, and at one point dresses as the Corpse Bride), although the rest of it was pretty much your standard romance fare.

A fantasy romance about three sisters with magical powers, co-written by three separate authors. You see all the ways in which this could go wrong, right? Right. Well, Mare's story—written by Jenny Crusie—is the strongest and the wittiest, but it's nowhere near vintage Crusie. Dee's story was mostly boring (though God, let me count all the ways I never again want to read an erection described as 'rampant'); Lizzy's story irritated me, because it was full of all the smug, patronising, clichéd thi

I absolutely found this book to be hilarious! That being said, I enjoyed the "Dogs and Goddesses" version more, and I think that has more to do with the editing and less to do with the writing.
The story opens up rather well, and the dialogue between the characters works stupendously well. I'm a very big stickler for good character dialogue and this book had it.

Aaargh! I hate it when I buy a book knowing that I've read it before and not really liked it.
Three sisters are in hiding from their wicked aunt. They are witches but have never been trained and therefore don't know how to use their powers to the utmost. But they are powerful and their aunt wants their powers. To that end, she's cast a spell to have all of their true loves show up to... well, I don't know what. Help convince the girls that they should want normal lives? I don't know. But of More...

I planned on liking this book because it came highly recomended from a friend with similar tastes, but it didn't really work out. The writing is good, the characters are good, most of the humor works; as long as a book can meet these qualities I tend to really enjoy it, but there was a problem with the pacing. It's as if three short stories were intertwined into one novel and because of that there is a lot of jumping around between plots without much substance and it just comes off as looong.

The novel brings two words to mind – Guilty Pleasure. I love me so good old, bad for me pleasure reading. It's like candy for the mind. Chocolate for the soul. Scratch that last one, chocolate is for the soul. At least it is in my world. Written in rounds by Jennifer Cruise, Eileen Dreyer and Anne Stuart, The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes is highly reminiscent of Charmed, The Witches of Eastwick, (except I liked this book), Stardust and Practical Magic all rolled into one. So if you don't like ste

This book, simply put, was fun! It was a nice change after my last book, which wasn't that fun. I liked the light-spirit of the story, with one of my favorite themes: family. I adore my sister, so stories with sisters who love each other and get alone are always welcome.
Can I be honest? I read this book because Anne Stuart was one of the writers. I happily tried to pick out which parts of the narrative that she wrote, and I think I did a good job. But, in the process, I thoroug More...

Romance, Fantasy. I was prepared to laugh this book out of the room. I mean, a collaboration between three authors? With SEVEN pov characters? But it was better than I expected. I got it for Crusie, but I enjoyed most of the rest of the book, except for a large part near the end that was supposed to be sexy and was instead just tedious. (Dee Fortune, I'm looking at you.)
To wit: The three Fortune sisters -- each with their own magical power -- have been hiding from their evil Aunt Xan More...

I picked up this thinking it was an anthology with 3 stories and an undercurrent theme, I was quite surprised to discover that this is in fact a full length book where the 3 authors collaborated to write one story.
It’s the story of sisters Dee, Mare and Lizzie who are witches and are on the run from aunt Xantippe who murdered their parents a few years back. The problem is Mare and Lizzie are tired of running and so this time aunt Xan catches up with them. The aunt is our usual villai More...

Just finished this one tonight-- what a hoot. I have to say that from the way the blurb was written, I thought it was a collection of 3 novellas by 3 different authors. Not-- it was a very cute collaboration about 3 witchy sisters whose powers are a) completely out of control and b) go especially haywire when the girls are sexually aroused. Hijinks ensue.

This was a marginal read at best.
Here is a prime example of collaboration gone wrong. Three separate writers each only working on a single character amounted to three copy-cat story lines. It seemed as if the characters had been an afterthought, tacked on simply as a means of getting from one unoriginal event to another. The whole book reminded me of a harlequin romance novel (and that's not a compliment).
I only finished it because I had nothing else to read at the time.

I would never have guessed that a collaboration between Jennifer Cruise and Anne Stuart could work so well. (Had never read Eileen Dryer before, so had no opinion about her.) Though it was obvious from their unique styles which author was writing the point of view of which witch sister, the book felt pretty much seamless overall; it seemed natural that each character would have her own style. I found it a very funny story and enjoyed the world building and the symmetry of the plot.

I wasn't quite sure of what to make of this book. When i initially bought it I though it was an anthology. It's not. It is a novel written by three authors. I hadn't read anything by any of these authors so I don't know whose writing was dominant. There were a LOT of character vignettes. The story is, the 3 witch sisters are in hiding in a small town because the oldest of them, Dee, believed their aunt Xan killed their parents and stole their powers. Their aunt Xan is a power-hungry witch. She

The only one of Crusie's books that I couldn't get through. Normally her books make me laugh out loud, but this one just didn't grab me. The story's about three sisters with magical powers that are on the run from their evil aunt. What's odd is that Crusie begins the story and then two other authors finish the book in sections. I would much rather just read Crusie.

I don't know why, but I really don't like Jennfier Crusie's writing style. I have tried to read several books by her and I usually have to make myself finish them. I can tell she had a heavy hand in this book because the same things I don't like about her others is true here. I think it is just a personal style preference as I know people who love her stuff.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a paranormal romance by Jennifer Crusie, the author of one of my all time favorite contemporary romance books, Bet Me.
She co-authors this one, but the book is seamless. Fun and light, with magical mayhem. It's about three sisters and their long awaited confrontation with their murdering, wayward, evil, magic sucking aunt.
However, not all the male characters have a great presence. Poor Danny seems to get shorthanded on the spine department. I was ex More...

I've read this book several times. It's one I like to pull out during the Halloween season and read again every year :-) It's the story of 3 sisters, all of who have some "issue" with using their magic and the guys who make their dreams come true. It's a cute, sexy, fast read and I'd recommend it to anyone :-)

This book is a hoot. A very lighthearted and somewhat silly story of three sisters in their twenties who are inept and unwilling witches in a small town in West Virginia. What happens when their evil Aunt sends them each their true love? A perfect book for a long plane ride or a beach chair in Florida.

The Crusie parts of this, particularly the dialogue, deserved more stars, but the rest of it reminded me why I don't tend to read a lot of romance apart from smart, funny favourites such as Crusie. I liked the premise but couldn't get past the characterisation - I need more from my heroes than HOT ABS. Sorry.

Good story about three sisters who have been on the run for 13 years from their aunt finally growing up and becoming the women they were to afraid to be. Some very funny one liners. My fav is "So you would be alright with penny pinching?" Response "I live to hear Lincoln scream."
