"The Sins of Lord Easterbrook" is book four in Madeline Hunter's 'Rothwell' family series and in some ways, I think it might be the most interesting. The story is one of the clash of cultures, traditions, classes, and genders.

Leona is the daughter of an English father and a Portuguese mother who was raised in the Far East. She's never forgotten the Englishman, Edmund, who was the object of her affections, her first kiss, and possibly her first betrayal. She's come to England to assist her young...more

While this book sounded great, for me it fell flat.

After seven years Leona Montgomery and Christian, Marquess of Easterbrook meet again, as Leona travels to London in order to find partners in her family’s shipping business and to investigate some top peers whom slowly destroyed her father’s business and later slowly killed him When she comes across Christian again the years fall away as the attraction that sparked between them still burns bright. Christian has never forgotten again Leona throu...more

I have just recently discovered Madeline Hunter, after experiencing a rather, drawn out, and annoying bout of 'reader's block'

I picked this book up at my local bookstore, thinking it would be an easy read, to help me out of my slump. Let me tell you what I have discovered, about Ms Hunter...

In my opinion, her writing is amazingly clever, devastatingly sexy, and with just the right amount of mystery to keep the pages turning.

In short, I have definatly found myself another favorite author.

In this sensual late Regency romance by New York Times bestselling author Hunter, vibrant and unconventional shipping heiress Leona Montgomery journeys to England from Macao on a mission—to locate and bring to justice the mysterious cabal who drove her merchant father to his death in the Orient. She is disconcerted to discover her enigmatic and melancholy girlhood flame, now the Marquess of Easterbrook, in the thick of the mystery.

Christian, Marquess of Easterbrook is rumored to be half-mad. He...more

Possible spoiler! Leona Montgomery came to London with a mission to assist her brother (after her father's death 7 years ago) to find a shipping partner or alliances for their families shipping business going into China. Her other hidden agendas included making the people in London aware of the opium business as well as try and discover who the powerful people in London were who destroyed her father partly due to his vocal concerns regarding opium. In trying to make contacts, Leona began meeting...more

I have been looking forward to this book for what seems like forever. Throughout this series I have been intrigued by Lord Easterbrook. He was so different from all the other characters and I couldn't wait to see what made him tick. Unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations.

I think the statement that Easterbrook makes to Leona, "I am Easterbrook" really defines the entirety of his character. He's troubled yes, but the issues he has are overshadowed by his arrogance and belief in his own super...more

I have been a fan of Madeline Hunter ever since she wrote medievals. While those still remain in my keeper’s shelf her latest offerings haven’t been granted the same status. Entertaining yes but not as fulfilling. I do still read them all and the latest one was this.

We’ve been following Easterbrook since book 1 of the Rothwell series (this is book nº4) and while he hasn’t been a very sympathetic character there’s always been an aura of mystery about him that I felt could be a good omen for his...more

Hate it. After enjoying the third book in the series back in February I was looking forward to finding out what lurked behind Easterbrook’s mysterious persona. Unfortunately it wasn’t anything I was interested in learning more about. I could not stand him. Turns out he is “sensitive” to the “thoughts” of those around him so he likes to keep himself so he isn’t overwhelmed by everyone’s feelings. Umm so basically he wants to be Edward from Twilight. Except he lacks the things that Edward had that...more

The best and worst about Hunter as a romance writer. On the plus side: good plotting, intriguing use of history to drive character, good development of tension and pace. On the minus: sexuality must ALWAYS = woman's submission; hero = arrogant and domineering for no good reason (except perhaps that some readers like their alpha males to boss them around). Interesting to me to think about which romance authors write the same hero over and over (or at least are driven by the same ideology about lo...more

I really enjoyed this book, the last one of the Rothwell series. We got glimpses of Christian in previous books and he seemed as though he would be an intriguing character and I was not disappointed. Madeline Hunter makes most of her male characters Alpha males in that they are very decisive and know what they want. Her female characters are usually strong, unconventional characters. Ms. Hunter knows how to create sexual chemistry between her main characters and also knows how to write very sens...more

I am sorry to see this series end. The Rothwell family is fascinating and the women feisty and fun. The Lord and eldest brother, Christian, is a mystery to most, even his own brothers Elliott and Hayden. He spent several years gone from England when he was not yet the Marques, with no explanation, only to return with no answers. He is uncaring of the rumors swirling around him - after all he is now the Marques and above common gossip - but a family member puts it well - he seems to be waiting fo...more

I have enjoyed Madeline Hunter's books before, and this was no exception. It was a surprise though that the title character had the ability to read the emotions of those around him. This ability gave Lord Easterbrook a reason for being excentric, though I am not sure it was necessary. I would have believed him excentric for any number of mundane reasons, and the story would have still been pretty good. Definitely worth a read for fans of the author. Helpful to read the other books in the Rothwel...more

Leona yang tadi nya mau protes, kaget, jika ternyata "penculik" n...more

Leona and Christian met seven years ago in a land faraway from England. When Leona ends up in England looking for "Edmund", Christian knows that his past is about to come back and finish taking out the rest of his heart. He never forgot the dark-haired, dark-eyed beauty and she never forgot the kisses of a wild, dark souled young man.

Leona has come to try and form some shipping alliances for her brother's shipping company. She has also come to find the men whom destroyed her father and ultimate...more

The Sins of Lord Easterbrook is the fourth book of Madeline Hunter's Rothwell Series. Madeline is one of my favorite authors and this is a wonderful series. In this book Christian, Marquess of Easterbrook discovers that Leona Montgomery is now residing in London. He first met her seven years ago in China, while escaping his father and duties. Leona's family were English shipping merchants involved in trade with India and China. After discovering some unsavory things about the shipping industry a...more

Rainy three day week-ends demand mindless trash. Mindless this was and marginally entertaining. It could have been better had Hunter actually fleshed out the initial interlude between Leona and Christian or perhaps made his "affliction" more concrete. Mirror, shadows and illusion simply make a lack-luster story. Still, everyone was screwing, avoiding scandal, getting married and cranking out the kids with the blessing of "society." A true bourgeois ending that preserves the status quo. Natch.

Hunter hooks us on the first page with a slightly humorous but dark and tortured Lord Easterbrook. She balances the story with a business-savvy and head-strong Leona Montgomery, who you immediately know is going to disrupt his world. The passion between the two runs hot. Secrets could forever break their trust in one another. And solving long over-due mysteries could lead to murder.

What I like most about this book is that when one of the characters needs to deal with an issue Hunter has them ha...more

I really, really, loved Christian/Edmund. He was an interesting mix ruthless/decisive and vulnerable and overall a very unusual/odd hero due to his afflction. (There was something about him that reminded me of hero in The Madness of Ian Mackenzie.) Anywho I thought Leona, the heroine, was fairly strong and and likeable heroine and liked the secondary characters as well. The begining was a little slow I think because the writing felt a little formal. But Christian sealed the deal for me.

I thought this was alovely book with believable likable characters and and interesting paranormal twist. The hero can sense other's emotions, and the heroine knows devistating secrets about his family. He is something of a recluse to avoid people, she has been running her families business for her young brother for years. There is lots of satisfying conflict, good sex. A lovely read.

Christian Easterbrook and Leona Middleton. She is in London trying to sort out the mystery of her father's ruin at the hands of opium smugglers. He hears other people's emotions. He's "Half-mad." Gave this a B+ at the time, and now in hindsight, I still say it was solid with good characters. Plot ok. Consistent author B+ to A range.

I felt the first half of the book was pure torture and only for Kay would I finish it. The end of the book was amazing and I wished the author had focused more on that portion of the story. The sins of the father passing to the son was a great storyline, but did not become apparent until well over halfway through the book.

I must admit, I initially didn't really care for this story. I really liked the Marquess of Easterbrook from Hunter's other novels, but in this book, I found his voice confusing and cliche. I truly don't care for Regencies with mentions of the Orient or the East. Mostly because I know that if the views are true to the era, I'll be offended, and if they aren't, I'll be annoyed that it is so modern.

However, the mystery involving the Montgomery family as well as the Easterbrooks surpassed my disda...more

Not as good as I expected. Of course there were its moments but just not overly exciting or absorbing.. it took me a few days to finish it rather than two days like the other books in this series. It's somewhat a hit-or-miss book but I think it's mediocre. 3/5 stars.

I've enjoyed reading the reviews on this book- so varied. If you enjoyed the series you have to read Christian and Leona's story. MH has written one of the best declarations of love around! Her endings are almost always amazing and this one in particular was outstanding.
