I think I read this book when I was in library school at UW. If this is the book I remember, the introduction gives a history of the island take-overs from Jesuits to Germans to Japanese, and a overviews of the Chamorro and Carolinian cultures (compare and contrast). My mother-in-law is from Saipan (Chamorro), born shortly after the war so it was quite interesting from a family-dynamics point-of-view -- so many things make sense!
