Although Philadelphia defense attorney Victor Carl’s fiancée left him for another man, the flame for her has never completely diminished. When she steps back into his life, claiming regret, Victor once more finds himself falling for a woman who never reveals much about herself. When her husband is murdered, the evidence initially points to Julia, but Victor becomes a person of interest because he was with Julia the night her husband was killed. It isn’t long before the case takes a serious turn ...more
Seventh in the Victor Carl, Philadelphia criminal defense lawyer, series.
Carl finds himself defending his First and Only True Love, Julia, against a charge of murdering her husband.
This is a plot that stands or falls on Lashner’s ability to write about obsessive love--and he mostly fails.
There is practically nothing to this plot, and Lashner’s trademark twists are not terribly interesting. Starting with the previous book, Carl’s internal monologue about himself and...more

I have had this stupid cold/sinus thing for a few weeks now and yesterday I felt tired and blah. So I grabbed this book off the mound and laid down and covered up. Turns out it was just what the doctor ordered. It was easy, fast, and did hold my attention. The main character Victor Carl is a lawyer who has been secretly meeting with his married ex-fiance. Carl makes a lot of bad decisions throughout the book. The book could have been 200 pages instead of 400 if this lawyer had made a couple good...more
devastated on two counts: this is the last book in the series (so far, anyway); and its my least favourite.
most of the ingredients were there - victor carl, as layered as an onion. not sure himself if he's a good guy or a bad guy. twisty story line. etc. but it just fell short for me. some familiar secondary characters - but not as much volume as previous, the book suffered for it. a couple new secondary characters - of special not two new cops for victor to deal with.

I really love Victor Carl. He wants to be the tough, strong, serious defense attorney. But he is unable to do that because he is a smart mouthed schmuck who continually finds himself in scrapes with the law.
The beginning of this series finds him accidentally defending the mob of Philadelphia. It was not a place he wanted to be but alas, it was the only source of income.

This book was pretty amazing. I was recommended to read this from a friend that had just got done reading it himself. The lead in this book reminds me of a character Billy Chrystal would have played. It was pretty funny throughout and kept me on my toes pretty much from beginning to end. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good Mystery novel and has any kind of sense of humor.

Definitely Lashner's weakest book to date. Font size was bigger, hence the book was shorter. Story seemed somewhat formulaic, just not as well developed and exciting as his other Victor Carl books. He says VC will be retired temporarily. Hopefully his next effort will be better.
I haven't read a mystery in a while, so I was ready for a change of genre when I picked up this book. I liked Lashner's style quite a bit. There are multiple characters, but he avoided introducing new characters that seem unrelated halfway through the book. The crime, clues, suspects, etc. all seemed logical, and the solution was unexpected and suprising but not in the way that it is unrealistic. I hate it when a mystery writer pulls a solution out of thin air right at the end and very few o...more
Very clever mystery with humor. Beautifully written by Iowa Workshop graduat, William Lashner. Highly recommend it. It's dark, wry and hard-boiled in all the right places.
Although the plot was a bit contrived, and the writing a little cliched, this book was a really enjoyable read. Highly recommend.
I agree with other readers...not his best of the CV series...the ending is way too abrupt and it seems the author was just too tired to finish the book...hopefully his next one will be as good as his first ones...
This is an average who done it.
I do like Lashner's style.
Kept me guessing to the end.
Not his best but still good
Murder mystery set in Philadelphia, in the noir style of Chandler or Hammett.
Just your average murder mystery.
I listened to this book on a Playaway.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I had heard good things about this book. It was good but I think I must have been expecting great. I enjoyed it but probably withh prioritize this author after I read many other books first. Not my favorite.
Lashner has elimiated most of the characters we have come to love except for Victor Carl, who is basically an unlikable character. This is the first time I have been disappointed in a Lashner book. It was a chore even finishing it.
I loved this book! I received it as an advanced copy but just got around to reading it. Wonderful novel.
From TwitterLit. Described as "seventh crime thriller to feature Philadelphia DA Victor Carl."
The narrative in this book was a bit noir-ish for me, otherwise a decent mystery.
liked some of his other books. good brain candy, but couldn't even finish this one
Maybe not a good entry book for this series.

The cover said Heart-Punding Suspense... Um, yea. It was boring. I really had to push myself to read this book.
