Since these have been on the bestseller's lists recently, I thought I'd give them a read. Apparently James Patterson decided to jump on the recent women's mystery series craze. The books, thusfar, are 1st to Die, 2nd Chance, 3rd Degree, 4th of July, and 5th Horseman.
Despite the uncreative title for the series (Women's Murder Club? Come on!) the books work rather well. We're not talking the depth or detail and complexity of Sherlock Holmes here, but...more

2ND CHANCE opens with Lindsay, now a Lieutenant, on sabbatical attempting to heal the wounds inflicted upon her, mentally and physically, in 1ST. Although unsure of the timing of her return, it becomes etched in stone when a young girl is gunned downed in front of a church by a sadistic sniper.
During her investigation, it quickly becomes apparent that this attack wasn't random rather, the young girl was a specific target. Further investigation leads Lindsay to a symbol, ultimately determine...more

The sensational killings that have rocked San Francisco appear to be unrelated except in their brutality. But detective Lindsay Boxer senses there's some thread connecting them all. She calls her friends in the Women's Murder Club together to see if they can discover what it is. Surely some clue has been over-looked by their bosses and male colleagues.

hmmmmm...So this book seemed remarkably similar to the first one, but a lot sadder. To be fair, I read these books back to back, so it could be that. But I also feel like a good book is a good book and should be awesome ANY time you read it.
I didn't feel like I got to know the characters any better in this book, but I really like all of them. Except Cindy, the reporter, sometimes I find her overly flawed. Like he is setting her up to turn on the women at some point...

"2nd Chance reconvenes the Women's Murder Club, four friends (a detective, a reporter, an assistant district attorney, and a medical examiner) who used their networking skills, feminine intuition, and professional wiles to solve a baffling series of murders in 1st to Die. This time, the murders of two African Americans, a little girl and an old woman, bear all the signs of a serial killer for Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to lieutenant of San Francisco's homicide squad. 2nd book in the "women's murder club" series. Enjoyed it!

I went through a bit of a James Patterson kick for a while back in the day so please excuse the sheer amount of his books that I've read.
I think anyone who has read his books will agree they are not difficult or challenging BUT they are entertaining and full of suspense and keep you turning pages. I've enjoyed every one of his books that I've read! Mostly on vacation or in between reading some of the longer, not as ...more

After the success she had in her last case, Lindsay Boxer is promoted to Lieutenant within the San Francisco Police Department and thrown into a new investigation as well. This time around, a shooter is targetting black policemen and their relatives in what seems like a case of revenge. Boxer must now pull out all stops with the Women's Murder Club and solve the crime as the city is breathing down her neck to get it solved because it seems to them like the crimes are racially motivated. Yet anot...more

I don't even feel bad about liking this series. I didn't start reading WMC series until they cancelled the show, which is what hooked me. I know its wrong, and I could get kicked out of book clubs for admitting this, but the characters will always be the actresses cast in the show, and I like it that way. Yes, Jill, that means you are now an unmarried blonde, deal with it. I'm enjoying the book very much, classic James Patterson. The problem is I read it at night before bed, but inevitably I get...more

The second book in the Woman's Murder Club Series. I enjoyed this book more then 1st To Die. 2nd Chance was so fast paced and the plot was exciting. I started it in the morning and I finished by 7pm. This book went into the woman's personal lives a little more. Cindy finds love...but Jill has sad times. Lindsay's father shows up - I hope he shows up more in the future

Clearly someone other than Patterson wrote a good portion of this book. For a book that is supposed to be about 4 women, it lacked a certain femininity. I'm not saying that the characters needed to be more feminine, just that there were times when I thought to myself that it was clearly a man writing the book because it seemed like he was trying too hard to make the characters into the stereotypical “strong woman in a male world” role. I think that Patterson does a pretty decent job writi...more

I liked the first book well enough tp read the second, and was not disappointed with it, either. Since this is a book I read solely for entertainment, I don't have much to say about it. I like Patterson's idea of four women from disparate professions sharing information to solve crimes, although in the real world, I don't think that would ever happen. It is the interactions among the four main characters that make the book truly interesting. A plot full of twisty possibilities doesn't hurt, ...more

It looks like James Patterson has fobbed this series off on a "co-author." Disappointing.
The plot has almost exactly the same structure as "1st to Die," in the style of "We definitely have the killer! The case is airtight! Except... we don't have the killer and the case is full of holes."
Lt. Lindsay Boxer also suffers not one but TWO acute attacks of Lois Lane Syndrome and charges into dangerous situations with the sort of recklessness only a fictional c...more

A solid book, if a bit contrived.
The super cop heroine who is infallible and indestructible wears a bit thin after awhile. At least in this book it was proven that Lindsay isn't infallible, although the indestructible gene still runs strong.
The twist at the end probably wasn't needed and quite honestly felt as if it was a last minute decision. The book would have worked just as well without it.
So yes, a solid book, but not fantastic.

i am offically hooked on the women's murder club books. i probably would have given it 3.5 stars, but since that wasn't an option, i went with 4. it was much better than the first book; i liked the storyline more and readers are getting to know and like the characters more in book 2. i am excited to finish the stack of books i have so i can get to book 3. the only thing that sticks out as a negative in the book is some of the language.

Okay... maybe it was because I just read a REALLY good book by Michael Connelly that this book just seemed mediocre. It was a quick read but the characters & storyline seemed rather simplistic and predictable. It was okay... but that was it, a book you can read while distracted on a plane or at the beach, in a waiting room, you get the idea.. not real deep. I may read the next in the series, but only if i need something to pass the time.

The second women's murder club book that I have read. I really liked this one too. Yes you know with these books that the first person that they go after and catch is not going to be the right person, but I like that because I am always thinking about who it is then. I liked that all the girls had their little side stories. I really like that they are always there for each other. I will keep reading these books.

So, I really liked the story. I do think if every book is gonna be .. we got the killer .. but oh wait, no, it's someone else .. that's going to get old to me.. but on the whole I liked it. The narrators I didn't like. The woman made everything sound melodramatic and Jeremy Piven ... well, one of the first words he said from the text was dismal and I thought, that is a perfect way to describe his reading ..

This was a great quick read by Patterson. I really like a book that I can pick up and not want to put down, but read in a short amount of time. This book was such a page turner that I had a hard time putting it down when I had to go to work. I like that Patterson has a woman as the lead. The Women's murder club books seem to be turning out pretty good. I hope they all follow the lead of the first two.

Now that I've got an hour commute each way, I'm a huge fan of audio books! This story kept me interested the whole way through. The main characters are just amazing and it's great to have smart, capable, high powered women can cut through the red tape and get the job done. They're the kind of women you'd love to hang out with on the weekend and it really kept me involved. Highly recommended.
