This book didn't blow me away, but it will do nicely if you need to help young children understand what a bully is. If you have a choice, instead, reach for the far superior, The Last Laugh first! (see below). The premise of Tough Jim is simple. The first graders plan a costume party and Jim struggles to decide what to wear. On the day of the party he arrives as The Strongest Man. During the party, the third grade bully wanders in and bullies the kids, especially Jim. Jim, being the Strongest ...more

A first grade class has a costume party. The choosing and wearing of costumes makes up the bulk of this mildly written book. The rest involves a third grade bully who disrupts the party and then gets knocked down accidentally by the titular Jim. Not exactly a long-term bully solution. The illustrations are a little blurry and struck me as old fashioned.

The best part is probably that one kid goes to the costume party as a hiccup.

During a costume party, a bully from an older grade is mean to Jim and Jim puts the 3rd grader in his place. This is not a book I would recommend if a child is having problems with a bully because violence is not the answer! However, its a good book to teach children how to predict and use their imagination.

This book was ostensibly about beating a bully but didn't teach any good lessons for such young kids. The solution was an accidental toppling of the bully into a trash can that the teacher then ignored as some sort of justice.

The first graders are trying to plan a costume party but the third grade bully tries to ruin their fun. Jim is able to help everyone when he finds the courage to stand up for himself and his friends. Very cute!
