"It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured."

So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false pass...more

This book has me. Completely. A friend from high school gave this to me because I married an Indian man. She said "Now you are an Indian, so here is a book to teach you everything you need to know about India and Indian culture."

She was right. I have been telling my husband things that he didn't even know before.

This is a novel that will catch you and draw you in before you've even realized it. You will learn more than you ever knew you wanted.

Good book based on the author's own experience; a continuation of part 1 and should be read/heard in sequence. It's sobering to realize that both the prison sequences & the drug use/cold turkey recovery were based on his own experience. (not for the feint of heart)

This book was amazing. It was violent, philosophical, humorous, heart-felt, and provided so much Indian culture. It was such an interesting book that I couldn't put down.

The writing is so vivid you feel like you are there. It feels like a true to life memoir and not a novel. Some parts are tough to take and then speed reading comes in handy.

Fun read about an Australian convict out to start a new life in a few country and the battle between good and evil in his search for a non-criminal life.

The book started out promisingly enough, but after 300 pages or so, I just knew it wasn't for me. Too predictable and bombastic for me.

I have different opinions with regards to each aspect of Shantaram on audio. The reader, Humphrey Bower, is quite possibly the best narrator I’ve ever encountered. On the other hand, though, I didn’t find myself reveling in particularly stunning passages as many of Shantaram‘s readers have. I didn’t like Lin and wasn’t much compelled to care too deeply about him.

My full review is posted on my blog, Erin Reads.
