I'm trying to catch up on the 2009 RITA nominees. This was one of two in the historical category that I hadn't read yet. And WOW! I've enjoyed Pam Rosenthal books before, in particular Almost a Gentleman. But The Edge of Impropriety is her best yet, I think.

Even though I grew up on Heyers and old Harlequins, I've largely lost interest in romance novels (of the het variety, that is) the past few years. Even the well-written ones have left me feeling pretty bored. Which is a little depressing when you practically cut your eyeteeth on the things. I missed enjoying romance novels. I think I would have enjoyed this more if the author had spent more time on the sex and less time congratulating herself on her own cleverness. The writing is both self-conscious and smug; toward the end a minor character thinks (thinks!) the word "synecdoche", which is immediately followed by a brief definition, AND a disapproving reminder that an educated person would already know it. This year's RITA winner in the Historical Category. I can see why. Very different sort of romance--the kind you'd like to write, but couldn't get an editor to accept. Yet, Rosenthal did find a publisher of this tender story between a middle-aged novelist at the very end of the regency period and a bachelor antiquarian who has been raising his brother's two children.

I almost finished this novel, but then got distracted by other things...like editing work and reading CryoBurn (which isn't erotic at all, but contains such emotion).
I think I had the most trouble with The Edge of Impropriety because I cared so little about the characters. At times I felt like is was written only to give the author the freedom to write about sex. At times I felt it was slightly wordy.
Essentially, the book is about a man named jasper who gets custody of his niece and nephew after their parents were in a boating accident. Later this man falls in love with a Lady Gorham who is an author. The unlikely pair seem to dance in circles throughout this book only to come to a predictable ending.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I ended up doing. I didn't dislike it--I just finished it and thought that's all? I very much liked the protagonists--both of whom were older and with the accomplishments and regrets of lives lived; I liked the supporting characters, but in the end, it just didn't quite add up. It felt sketched-in in many places and I honestly could have sacrificed the sex scenes for more about the characters.

It was mildly amusing, and served its purpose as being brain-candy. I'm not really a huge fan of regency-era novels one way or the other, but the characters were a bit unconventional in being somewhat older, more eccentric, and more independent. The end outcome was actually quite modern in some ways. Honestly, that's really all I have to say about it - it's just not my cup of tea, but I didn't dislike it.

I don't care if the description of this one makes it sound like a hard-core romance novel -- it's not, and I'm reviewing it anyway. This book feels like it's written by Jane Austen's one-generation-older and very-much-more-wordly-relative. It's very wittily, snarkily, and cleverly done -- a surprise not only in this genre but also in general these days. I highly enjoyed this book.

This is a really beautifully written love story. I loved the main characters, Jasper and Marina, who are both slightly older than average for an historical romance (very refreshing). The secondary love story was also touching. At times, there was a bit too much introspection and I think it slowed down the pacing (the only reason I don't give it 5 stars). Still, I read it in one sitting!

ampe ke page 100an baru agak lumayan n makin akhir emang makin seru..
tp ntah kenapa rasanya lebih tertarik ama hubungan Anthony n Miss Hobart..
Sydney juga menarik karakternya..
kalo utk Marina-Jasper yah ok juga deh walopun endingnya agak2 membingungkan..
dan yg pasti crtnya emang cukup hot.. *hmpfh*

A cute Regency novel about a woman writer. It kept seeming like it was going to defy the usual, especially since it features an atypical romance with a professorial historian. But ridiculous blackmail and robbery get thrown into the picture, and I can't really recommend it.

Eh. I like Rosenthal as a rule but this book was disappointing. Just not a lot there, and the side plots weren't interesting. She's written better books; don't waste your time on this one.

I really wanted to like this book, but I didn't love the main character enough to finish it. The writing was great, and the approach to a romance novel refreshing. But after a bit I got irritated.
