As I write this, the hour draws later, every minute, every second casting my life further into the black, frozen abyss of the Past and bringing me one more step closer to the illimitable void that is my inevitable death. I can only pray that the sweet oblivion of sleep is able to scour away the memory of the horrors I have endured, of the horrors that I have perpetrated. And if there is a God, and if He is merciful, he will allow me the privilege of perishing before I wake so that I may not see ...more

A selection of Lovecraft's entertaining short stories. Each lavished with detailed description and each packs the sort of twist ending present in all classic horror stories; the kind that makes you simultaneously shudder and review everything you just read in an entirely different light.
A few notes on the edition: the preface and the explanatory notes are really good and reveal a great deal about Lovecraft's life and the inspiration for his stories, but there are a few embarrassing typos. Th...more

Lovecraft may be the best American horror writer of all time - he's almost certainly the best since Poe - and this is a collection of some of his very best stories. The headliner here is "The Call of Cthulhu," which - forget all the mythos and follow-up stories by inferior writers - is an unparalleled tour-de-force of psychological horror. Lovecraft's singular knowledge of archeology, geography, and cults come together seamlessly to create a masterwork with an unforgettably inevitabl...more

Í was unable to finish all the short stories in this book; after a while, no matter how interesting, my reading was going very slowly and I had too many books on my TBR mountain to keep on trying to read this one and keep it for longer than necessary. I did like the stories read very much. I'd never read anything by this author so it was very interesting to be witness to his vivid -- if weird -- imagination. A true master of the horror.

His personal prejudices aside, Lovesraft's vision of the world is fascinating. There is a bleak hopelessness that appeals to my very core. His prose can be loquacious and awkward, but the sincerity with which he warns the reader of the coming doom is completely unsettling. I didn't love this story, but elements of it can be seen in all science fiction horror since. His influence trumps his descriptive ability.

i must admit to being a bit frightened the night after finishing this. though that may have been due more to the neighbors screaming and beating each other up outside my window than it was to the book. in any event, one of the most fully realized and terrifyingly oppressive horror stories i've ever had the pleasure to read.

L amgistralidad de los cuentos de terror de Lovecraft lo colocan en la literatura como un importante exponenete del género por la atmósfera de sus historias y lo espeluznante de sus tramas.

Lovecraft will always stay with me as a model of prose and insight into the frightening penumbra of the mind. I expect to read and re-read these stories until I too succumb to madness.
