Much better. Karen Traviss redeemed herself—and the Republic Commando series—with True Colors.

Characterization and plot were realistic and engaging. More threats; more consequences. Not surprisingly, Traviss captured the women's point of view, but she also seemed to grasp battlefield bonding. She took us into the minds of many characters: seeing themselves as outsiders and everyone else as "in", seeing their doubts, experiencing their angst.

Her weaknesses are ...more

I know what you're thinking; "A review of a Star Wars book?" For the sci-fi fan that doesn't want a novel laden with Jedi and Sith, this might be right up your alley. True Colors continues following the lives of two unique Commando squads, their sergeants, and those that are closely affected by their lives.

In this novel, part three of the four books released so far, Traviss presents a question to the Commandos; what happens to a clone after the war? This question comes very close to be...more

The Cloned and the Restless
I loved Hard Contact, the first real Clone Wars novel (in my opinion), but was disappointed with the slogging pace, political and ethical diatribes, and the hefty, largely unexplored cast of Triple Zero. But I wasn't so disappointed that I didn't pick up "True Colors" when it came out last year.

Plot:
The Clone War continues, and Skirata has vamped up his search for Ko Sai, a Kaminoan who may hold the keys to reversing the age acceleration i...more

I really want to say 3.5 stars because I liked this one better than the last two, though it wasn't an amazing novel by any means. I'm just glad that all the characters I like were focused on (Fi, Sev, and Besany) and not so much focus was given to Skirata. Etain didn't degrade further into some baby-obsessed mother, which I was glad about, and Darman regained his personality from the first novel.

Given that I thought this one was better than the last one, I don't have too much to sa...more

The third book in this Republic Commando series is easily my favorite thus far. It has the most centrally developed ideas and emotional weight behind the characters. The build up over the course of the previous two installments has culminated in amazing payoff for a number of characters. The emotion that Karen Traviss infuses into the narrative is simply amazing. You really care about these people by this juncture, with the outcome for at least one character being nearly soul crushing in its sad...more

Synopsis-Omega squad is back for another ocupation. This time they go to Graftikar to recon an invasion and to posibly find the MIA Alpha batch ARC. A-30 aka Sull. Etain(omega's favorite Jedi) is carrying a secret only a few people know about. Now Skirata and the null ARCs are all back and now, instead of blasting terrorest, there trying to find and capture one of the previous top scientists of Kamino, Kosai. Now is omega in over their head? Are they going to find the ARC AWOL? Will Etain's secr...more

This third installment of the Republic Commando series is the most convoluted yet. As more data comes into view, the line between friend and foe blurs and everyone must band together to pull through.

Delta Squad is sent to capture the renegade Kaminoan geneticist Ko Sai, but little do they know that Kal and a few of the Nulls are after her too. Etain's pregnancy is made known to almost everyone, except the father himself and the rest of Omega squad. Only by reading the whole book can ...more

This was far superior to the previous book in the Republic Commando series. Characters are given clear and interesting challenges to overcome, and the cast size is kept more manageable. Traviss' characterizations have improved, too. For the first time I genuinely felt like all four of the Omega clones have distinct personalities. A few points are beaten on with too much repetition (we shouldn't treat people like things, and Omega Squad is very Mandalorian, we get it!), and I do think the boo...more

follows the commandos as they find out more about the war and slowly realize that things are not as presented by Palpatine and the media. Skarata is hunting down the Kaminoan who engineered the clones so she can reverse the "fast aging" so they can live a normal length life. Traviss is really setting things up to tie in with the Legacy books. I didn't enjoy this novel nearly as much as the first two. The military jargon, the Mando'ese, it was just over used, imo, this time. You have so...more

Third book out of four in the series Republic Commando. Skirata finally has information on Chief Scientist Ko-Sai whom he would love to kill but won't because he wants to slow down the clones aging process enough for them to have a normal life span. A few groups are after Ko-Sai and so Skirata and Delta team up to find her. it is a great book probably has obscenities in it and once again they are of unknown language and have no known definition given to us. I recommend it ...more

It's been a good three years since I last read Traviss's Republic Commando books, and upon diving back into the world with "True Colors," I realized that was far too long. Traviss is incredibly deft with her treatment of the Star Wars universe - she makes the fantastic very real and accessible while still maintaining a very coherent feel with the rest of the canon. Her dialogue is a particular strength; all of the clones (okay, yes, I'll admit I have a huge soft spot for those guys, bu...more

This is actually the 3rd book, but I reviewed them here.

This is actually pretty deep, intriguing stuff from a series based on video games based on popular sci-fi movies. (Although, if you don't like military tactics and action, you won't like this series.) I was simultaneously reading Allegiance which takes place 21-22 years after this, right after Episode 4. I hadn't given thought to how the clone army of Episode 3 becomes the human recruit army of the later episodes, or really ...more

I liked the fact that this book "humanised" the clone troopers- something the movies couldn't do. Also, building up to order 66,
it was good to see characters actually noticing that something
fishy was going on (poor deluded Jedi). Sadly, the writing isn't crash hot, the repetition gets to be really annoying, but overall a good story.

Very good continuation of the themes Traviss set up in the first couple books. We'll see where she goes with them in the final installment. It did contain the expected and almost obligatory allusions to some current US troop policy, but with a light touch. Considering this is a Star Wars novel spin off of a video game, it's pretty decent.

An excellent addition to the series. It's a bit more idealistic and "political" than the others in the series, but doesn't let politics get in the way. Great character development and insights into the side characters backgrounds. In a word: awesome.

Another fantastic entry in the Republic Commando series. For anyone interested in Star Wars, but burnt out by the constant Jedi voyeurism and worship would do well to read this series. I enjoy most Star Wars novels, but this is particularly refreshing.

I put this book down to read some other non-Star Wars books. It's a little slow going but I enjoyed the other 2 Commando books and I'm sure this won't disappoint.

Karen Travis continues the buildup to the fall of the Republic. As her characters from the two preceding novels continue their work to plans to work on behalf of the clones of the Grand Army of the Republic to bring then to safety and a better life, you can see the changes and clues which will lead up to the Republic's fall. More and more questions are raised about what is going on in the background. Readers familiar with the storyline (and let's face it, you're not likely to be reading this ...more
