I'm an old-school Star Wars novel fan (Thrawn Trilogy, et al.), but my experience with Star Wars comics is pretty limited; Dark Empire (of course), and a bit of Tales of the Jedi, but that's about the extent of it. Interesting take on the history of the Star Wars universe. In this story, we have a disillusioned Cade Skywalker as an anti-hero, the descendants of Jag Fel as the heirs to an Empire, and Darth Krayt as the heir to the Sith legacy. I really enjoyed this - drew me into the series (now I've got to get the next one.....). Cade got pretty annoying with his mood swings; also, is it just me or do they think every Fel, since Jag has a line of white hair going up from a scar, has to have some white hair too? It made Marasiah, especially, look like a skunk. It's cool that Luke is coming to Cade as a Force ghost, too, especially this early on. All in all, it kept me entertained. Soon after I saw the movies, I was diving headlong into the extended universe as well. Soon after I saw the movies, I was diving headlong into the extended universe as well. In the early stages of what has already been a long and varied career in geekery, Star Wars was the predominant shaping force. I played the Rebel Assault, X-Wing, and TIE Fighter games until I’d mastered them (though I never did beat the Redemption mission). After a brief period cutting our CCG teeth on Magic, my friends and I switched wholesale to Decipher’s newly launched Star Wars card game, a passion which drained my pocket change all through high school. But above all that, perhaps even surpassing the movies themselves, were the books.

I began reading Star Wars books around the sixth grade, at point when I was transitioning away from the juvenile fiction of the public school curriculums, and it proved a perfect fit. The writing was sufficiently complex enough to challenge my developing literary sensibilities, but, being pop fiction, was not so involved as to be altogether beyond my grasp. The quality of the work ranged from extraordinary (I still consider Timothy Zahn’s work to stand at the pinnacle of the genre) to only slightly less puerile than the “young adult” fare I’d quickly learned to scorn (Kevin J. Anderson, anyone?). But good or bad, I devoured all of it, cause it was Star Wars. And, thinking back, I seem to remember most of the books being high quality. For the most part, authors were very careful to respect the continuity of previous work. Old familiar locations and aliens were mixed in with imaginative new ones; beloved characters went toe to toe with those who would become beloved. The endless, sprawling universe was the perfect soil in which to cultivate a fertile imagination and an enduring love of sci-fi/fantasy literature (it was somewhere in here when I first read Tolkien, which was the second, and ultimately larger, tremendous force shaping my geekdom).

Then, the summer of my junior year, came the long-awaited Event. After sixteen-some years, there was a new Star Wars movie. We had followed the production, read all the previews and features. We waited in line for tickets for hours; could barely sleep the night before. We expected nothing less than the sheer joy that this universe had previously delivered. And it took some time for the realization to sink in that it simply wasn’t any good. I’ll not go into a critique of the movie here, or speculate as to why George Lucas couldn’t succeed in capturing the flavor of his own universe in the way that so many relatively unknown authors had been able to. Suffice it to say that around this time my passion for the Star Wars saga began to cool. Probably it has as much to do with the fact that, as I read more real literature (Shakespeare, Faulkner, etc), I began to read more critically, and the excitement and familiarity of the brand couldn’t always overcome the flaws in the writing I was beginning to notice. Wherever the damage originated, it was done, and as the Expanded Universe expanded into both the prequels era and the New Jedi Order timeline, I stopped paying attention. My long obsession was over, and while I would occasionally pull one of my favorites off the shelf for a comfort read, that was the extent of my involvement with the universe. I barely noticed when the second two prequels were released, and though I saw both, they only made me ache with nostalgia for a time when I could lose myself completely in the sublime simplicity of light versus dark, Empire against Rebels, good triumphing over evil.

So when a friend offered to loan me the first four trade paperback collections in the Legacy series, set 125 years after Return of the Jedi, I was, to say the least, skeptical. The story centers around Cade Skywalker, last of that name after his father, and most of the remaining Jedi, are killed by the resurgent Sith, now an angry, drug-addicted bounty hunter barely scraping by while battling his inner Force demons. The self-styled Sith lord, Darth Krayt, who built his order apparently by handing a lightsaber to any Force-sensitive, malevolently inclined alien willing to dye themselves red and obey his every whim, has managed to wrest the Imperial throne from Emperor Fel, himself heir to a conspicuous legacy. And thus the stage is set for swashbuckling adventure and high personal drama. Will Cade conquer his past and continue his family’s heritage, or will the dark side claim him? Who will emerge victorious in the three-way power struggle among the Sith, Empire, and Galactic Alliance? Stay tuned and find out!

So is the book any good? Hard to say. On the one hand, it’s very entertaining; the story moves along briskly without wasting too much time on exposition. The characters are a bit too broadly drawn, perhaps, but they’re at least believable. The art, for the most part, is perfectly serviceable, though on occasion the layout gets a bit confused. But it doesn’t feel like Star Wars, or at least, not the Star Wars I remember. Oh sure, all the familiar parts are there, the aliens, planets, weapons, and terminology we remember, although the author definitely tries to incorporate elements from the entirety of the continuity, so some of the elements others will recognize are lost on me. Part of the problem seems to be the abundance of Force users; between the Sith, the Jedi remnant, and the Imperial Knights, every other character seems to be swinging a lightsaber. In the universe I’m used to, Luke was more or less the only true Jedi, and even when dealing with him, the best authors used a delicate touch. Here though, as in the prequel movies, the Force is everywhere, and in the overuse much of the mystical appeal is diminished.

I’m sure there are probably others who had similar experiences, enjoying the original expanded universe of Star Wars, then falling away from it as it grew beyond their tastes. To them, I can’t say that I’d really recommend this series. There were reasons why I got away from Star Wars, and reading this book reminded me of many of them. Yes, I was reminded of much that I once enjoyed as well, but I’m not sure the good outweighs the annoying. To those that still rabidly devour anything Star Wars, however, and are as steeped in the lore of the prequels and NJO timeline as I was in the original series, go for it. There’s much here you’ll enjoy. And after all, that’s why we were drawn to the Star Wars universe in the first place: the pure joy of letting imagination run wild.

Having started several of the other Star Wars Graphic Novels out there, I finally gave Legacy a try. I think the series is a wonderful counterpoint to Knights of the Old Republic, because the characters are gritty and dark (for Star Wars anyway) and the world is completely opposite both in the time period and who is in power. The reason, quite simply, is that Ostrander has done wondrous new things. Freed from the constraints of the timelines of the EU, and set over one hundred years after the Battle of Yavin, Ostrander is able to create a whole new galaxy, explore ideas that are foreign to the existing EU and create brand new characters. I think this is what the SW galaxy needs. As beloved as Luke and the gang are, they're old; and while I think I'll always have a soft spot for them and want to know more about them, I think the time has come to pass the torch. In the latest EU novel series, that's not being done very well. While some authors have created remarkable new characters, they've done them little justice and most of the high expectations I had for their development have fizzled.

Cade Skywalker and the Jedi as a whole have fallen on hard times. Once again, the order is being persecuted and hunted down after a joint Sith-Imperial conquest of the galaxy. The Galactic Alliance has finally fallen and the order that Luke so painstakingly recreated from the verge of extinction once again faces the same fate. The question, this time around, is whether or not the Skywalker line's destiny once again includes a chosen one capable of reunifying the order and freeing the galaxy from this new breed of Sith. You'd think so, until you meet Cade, a depressed, death stick junkie who's just as powerful as his ancestors, but a selfish, closed-minded wreck. Ostrander introduces several intriguing brand new characters and factions that are easy to identify with and rival the Skywalker progeny in the storyline for protagonist, which is befitting a multi-arc epic - something the novelists of the EU fail to realize. Does it have to be a Skywalker that saves the day in the end? Not really, but Ostrander knows including one grounds long-time fans in the story. He also echoes the original trilogy just enough to give those fans a sense of the familiar in this strange new galaxy he's created. It's brilliant, because it prevents you from rejecting this new arc as strange and unappealing (a problem that the entire Tales of the Jedi series had taking place thousands of years before the heyday of Luke, Han and Leia).

The writing is pretty solid, with usual comic-ese dialogue that occasionally makes you wince, but still manages to remain a cut above the drivel Christie Golden is producing in the novels. All-in-all, the pacing is tight and there don't seem to be random jumps along the plot line, which is always a danger and weakness of stories in this format. The story opens with the Sith conquest of the galaxy and a lot of interesting new questions. Ostrander jumps into the story in media res, with plenty of sword-swinging, swashbuckling action to hook you. Along the way, you're teased with the odd line referencing something that has happened in the immediate past, which of course, you want to know more about, so the hook is enticing enough and the treats spaced out enough to keep this a page-turner. There's also just the right amount of nods to the existing mythology for long time devotees to be satisfied that this is happening in the same beloved universe.

StarWars Rulz. This series is about Luke Skywalker's grandson. Thru what we know about Luke's ability to procreate, we can only say she must have been jewish or possibly a wookie, cause his grandson has a jew fro. One reason it is easy to grow a liking to this series is cause the main character or Luke's grandson will tell you throughout the stories that his grandfather is a pussy! Must read, Kol is King.

An establishing volume -- but what it establishes it FUN. Like Zahn's works, (the master of playing in the Star Wars Universe,) Legacy throws in clever twists on some of the set-ups of the original trilogy -- mostly just A New Hope, so far, but I'm hoping they keep up the touch-backs to continuity in addition to charting newer waters. Darker and edgier has me sold so far.

Takes place like 125 years after ROTJ. It's the story of Luke's great grandson Cade Skywalker. The Sith are back in power and the galaxy sucks in general. A lot going on in this story but that all comes later. This is a great stand alone trade or a fantastic opening to the series.

This ain't your daddy's Star Wars. Set 130 years after Return of the Jedi the universe is a very fucked up, yet interesting place to be. We follow a Skywalker descendant whose line-walkin hard ass, ass well as a bunch of Jedi, Imperials, Sith, Bounty Hunters, etc. If your looking for some hard edged Star Wars, this is your bag.

An interesting expansion of the EU. I like how it explores the far future and how dispite Jacen's extreme actions and noble intentions, the galaxy will once again crumble (as it always will), but hate how it sets in stone that Ben Skywalker HAS to survive, if only to make a baby before he dies.
