for this review, i will make lists informed by kurlansky's volumnous research. this book contains comprehensive end notes, a hearty bibliography and a thorough index - three things i really like! 1968, year of the revolution, baby.

kurlansky writes that 1968 was the year that "impossible things seemed possible," he then quotes a slogan taken from a wall in paris: BE REALISTIC, ASK FOR THE IMPOSSIBLE. this was the year that revolution seemed tangible and all over the world students ...more

After reading Kurlansky's book on non-violence, this was a bit of a disappointment. The book chronicles the anti-establishment movement that had gripped the world in 1968, primarily through student organizations in response to the Vietnam War. He most thorough investigation is of the Prague Spring and its aftermath.

The folly of the world's leaders at the time is shocking, but more shocking is the fact that our elected leaders continue to operate so idiotically.

The book is hard to put dow...more

I got this book as research on a piece I am writing about 1968. It was a good account of certain aspects but Kurlansky focused only on left-wing radical student and youth movements to the exclusion of all else. That was OK but he left out quite a bit, even of that. The feeling of rage and even any direct quotation of the insane, ridiculous demands that a lot of these groups made were completely left out. There was little talk of anything outside the rarified world of student radicalism. The assa...more

While I am not much of a history student and, in fact, stopped taking history as soon in school as I could get away with it, I really liked this book. Maybe it's actually because I've never really studied history that I liked it, because it really summarizes a lot of conflicts and international events that I'd never really known much about. It essentially covers all the events and revolutions that occurred during 1968, plus it provides some back story so you know why things happened when and how...more

This book brought back a lot of memories of my youth.(I turned nineteen in 1968.) The author does a good job providing a digest of many of the events of that year, but at the beginning of the book the author offers the proposition that this is such an important year that it changed the world. While I do not question that many of the events that occurred that year, did much to alter history, the author fails to, in any great detail, address what he believes are the results of this seminal year.

This is a wonderfully written book. It is full of information, yet easy to follow, easy to read, and supported by pictures of the events. Kurlanksy uses a lot of empirical analysis of the events of 1968, trying to pinpoint relations between cultural and technological changes, while, at the same time, respecting the uniqueness of each situation.

This was almost too ambitious of a book. It might have made sense being three or four seperate books. The book was forced to jump around a lot because demonstrations were taking place all over the globe. It was still very informative. I don't remember much of '68 and I think the book is still good to read for anyone who doesn't remember '68.

What's great about this book isn't just the way in which it zeroes in microscopically on many of the events in America that took place in 1968, but how the author looks at events that were going on around the world at that time. A nice global viewpoint---and now I know something about Polish history in the 1960's.

1968 was a very tumultuous year, and one that really did "rock the world." (It's also the year in which I was born, so it fascinates me.) Mark Kurlansky takes a year filled with activity and turmoil, and sets it out very readably in this book. As good history books do, it makes the subject come alive.

This is an indepth study of the year 1968. I thought the focus would be in the United States, but the author covered international events equally. 1968 was much more than the assassinations of MLK and RFK. It was a year that changed the course of history.

This is probably the best of the Mark Kurlansky books I've read. Like Salt and the Basque book, it's all over the place subject-wise, but the binding of the topic to a particular year was more cohesive than those books. Highly recommended.

Kurlansky's stuff is always good - insightful and meticulously researched. This book will tell you more about what happened in 1968 (and what it all meant) than you will ever actually want to know.

Since I graduated from high school in 1968, this helped me remember those events during my senior year that was so lost because of the Viet-Nam War. Gift from one of my children.

Kurlansky takes a clear-eyed look back at the year that changed society - not just in the US but in many corners of the world. Well researched and well written.

Didn't get into the nitty-gritty of 1968 like I would have hoped. You can just skim the table of contents and read the chapters most interesting to you.
