"Good gracious!" said Alice, "I do believe I'm inside a review!"

She turned to the Hatter and the March Hare.

"Well, let me see. Here is the title, and here is the date I read it. That must be today. Now I need to explain the plot and the overall point."

"There is no plot," said the March Hare disagreeably.

"And there is no point," agreed the Hatter.

He poured a little hot tea on the Dormou More...

For the Celebrity Death Match Review Tournament, The Annotated Alice (6) versus The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (27)

"Let us hear the evidence!" said the King. The White Rabbit opened the letter and began reading aloud:
The Knave of Hearts, he killed some tarts
And kept them in his cellar...
"Stuff and nonsense!" interrupted Alice loudly. "That's not how it goes at all!"

"Silence in court!" said the King. "And you, young lady More...

Well, if you really love this book, please do not read on! I really did not enjoy the book, and I'm a little surprised that it's considered a classic. The one thing I did enjoy was that there were many imaginative scenes - all of the different places that she went, like the tea party, the garden, etc. But, the characters were drawn very poorly - they were simply drawn, and most were just annoying (even Alice!). Most of the characters in the great "wonderland" were either cruel, mea More...

With all that is happening to the book publishing industry, this is an interesting time. It used to be difficult to find such public domain works as R. B. Cunninghame Graham's A Vanished Arcadia: Being Some Account of the Jesuits in Paraguay, 1607 to 1767. Graham cut quite a swath through his time, being the founder of the Scottish Socialist Party, a picturesque Member of Parliament dressed in gaucho garb, and the inspiration for some of George Bernard Shaw's characters and for Joseph Conrad's N More...

I'm probably the world's biggest Alice fan. I collect anything and everything Alice whether it's classic style or Disney, doesn't matter. I even named my first child Alice. I have read Wonderland and Looking Glass several times throughout my life and I enjoy them every time. I've read them to my kids too and they like them as well. It's just fun and nonsense. There's no need to deeply analyze the greater meaning deep within the story or to try to figure out the author's motives or anything More...

“Curiouser and curiouser!”

Why I Read This

This is one of those books I’ve always wanted to read, but I never got around to it for whatever reason. I wanted to mark it off my to-read list.

Main Characters

This enchanting tale follows Alice through a place called Wonderland where she meets the most curious of individuals. While she tries to be polite, she has a short temper, which was fun to read, as I always imagined Alice as the timid sort.

This book was curious and curiouser and I just don't get it. So while I admit that the Alice in Wonderland movie doesn't really make a whole lot of sense either, it pales in comparison to this coked out misadventure. I've read that it is entirely unfounded speculation that the author was on drugs when he wrote this, although if I were him I would tell people I was on drugs rather than have them believe this was the work of my sober thought process. Half the time I didn't understand anything the More...

I always have a hard time reviewing the "classics." Not so much because I don't have anything new to say - I have my own impressions - but more because what if I didn't like it? Does that make me poorly read or did I just not get what everyone else got? There's a very good chance of the latter no matter what I'm reading, let's just be honest.

But that's not that I didn't like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I gave it 4 stars as you can plainly see (although you'll see in a More...

This is lovely. I can't believe this was written in 1865! Almost 150 years ago!

Alice's Adventures In Wonderland consists of 12 fairly short chapters. It is a quick read(on my e-reader, each chapter was approx. 24 pages or less).

It is basically whatever you want to see it as. It could be looked at as an influential fantasy, or just the daydreams of a young girl. Either way, it is witty, imaginative and bizarre. (Also, you can tell the author is British, which I love. British w More...

The world of fantasy!

If read with a bit of action, and a bit of imagination, this book can be a favourite book for children, and a exciting story that unfolds in ways that are unimaginable. It's a very exciting book of how alice walks through different phases in the book, and how the events shape the forthcoming events. The Rabbit hole and then onto the pool of tears and so on just makes the imagination of a child (and adult) wonder into a mysterical land! I'd recommend this book wh More...

I really loved this book! I can't believe that it has taken me this long to read it, but I was one of those weird children and this movie freaked me out so I never took the time to read this book until now. I want to watch the movie with Johnny Depp in it so.....what other choice did I have. I do have to say that this book gave me really weird dreams so you should use caution if you are reading right before bed. My husband woke me out one night because I kept yelling I want to be big. ok. this was a very interesting book. My dad read part of it on my new Lookbook (same thing as a Kindle pretty much) and he made a comment saying how the language was weird but I said that's because it's a classic. But I still enjoyed it. it was entertaining and a fun book to read. My only dissapointment was that Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum brothers weren't in it. I found that they were simply added to the disney cartoon movie. I was also amazed how disney managed to get the cartoon version almo More...

Just having finished Alice in Wonderland, the first thing that occurs to me is that I wish I had read it years ago. I've known the story of Alice for years thanks to Disney and the Mad Hatter on Batman, but for some reason I didn't get around to reading this as a child. While I expected to like it, I never realized what a joy this book would be.

Carroll was a logician, so it should come as no surprise that he uses his expertise in that field to create many hilarious logical fallacies. More...

Quick Summery of Plot: If you don’t know….Basically during a day out with her older sister, Alice’s attention is caught by a white rabbit wearing a waistcoat who just so happens to be checking his pocket watch. We all know she follows the rabbit down the famous hole and thus falls deep deep deep down into Wonderland where things just get curiouser ……and curiouser!!!

I picked up this book at a bookstore on 18th that was going out of business, because I was looking at it and I realized that I knew literally nothing about the entire continent of South America. I know that the Incas lived there and they got conquered by Pizarro, and I know the names of the countries that are there now, but that was the extent of my South American knowledge, which is pretty sad, when you think about it. It is an entire continent, after all.
Sadly, this book did not enlight More...

I absolutely love this book. It's complete nonsense of course, but that's the great thing about it. Alice, a little girl, falls down a rabbit hole and enters Wonderland, filled with talking animals and strange creatures, and a pack of cards that has a life of its own. It's a dream, and like most dreams it makes absolutely no sense at all. It was one of my favourite books as a child, so I decided to re-read it after 30 odd years, and I'm glad I did. It made me laugh out loud.

I've never really been a fan of Alice in Wonderland. The cartoon was creepy. Both human versions I've seen are just flat out bizarre. And then as a college student I learned too much about the author that I just couldn't separate author's life from author's work. (It's unfortunate when that happens, too.) Knowing pretty much all that was going to happen--and much of the lines having been quoted verbatim in some movie version--it wasn't interest-gripping. I may read the sequel just to know the di More...

Five stars for the story but only three for the artwork, and I split the difference. I probably would have found the artwork much more awesome ten years ago when I was fourteen. Still kind of cool, though, as the artist has talent.

What a crazy little book. Even more wild than the movie. And what an imagination. Yes, it's silly. Some very interesting puns in there too, especially in the discussion Alice has with the Mock Turtle. Hilarious.

A fun read if you enjoy satire and a bit of silliness.

I think I've been spoiled by Disney's version of this book and now actually reading the original version, I'm not as impressed. Gone is the cutesy/silly tea party, to be replaced by wordy and sometimes confusing prose about such things as a mock turtle and a drawn out section relating to the Queen and King, that got a bit boring reading after a few pages. It still remains a great story in general about a girl falling asleep and dreaming of a strange wonderland, but the original version is a bit More...

My review in this case applies to a very specific edition, that being the Bloomsbury edition with illustrations by Mervyn Peake. The illustrations are certainly significant to the overall experience of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, since Carroll even refers specifically to one of the illustrations in his text.[return][return]The Mervyn Peake drawings are something quite different than the much more familiar work of Sir John Tenniel. The work of the latter was included in the original editi More...

Imagine being in a world where everything is magical and fun. In this book there is a character named Alice who falls into a rabbit hole and goes into wonderland. Wonderland is a surreal place with unimaginable and indescribable characters. Also she comes across these characters who teach her lesson about wonderland. Having just been staying with a friend near Liverpool for a few days we went to the Tate Gallery in the Albert Docks to see the Alice in Wonderland exhibition. It began a little unpromisingly as some of the 'influences' and links drawn up by the curators were tenuous to say the least. I personally love the Pre-Raphaelites and the curators set themselves to say how influential Lewis Carroll was on their work, this may or may not be the case but one of the pictures appears to have been placed on t More...

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is the story of Alice, a young girl who follows the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole one summer day. At the bottom of the hole she finds herself in a room with a tiny door. This is where her adventure begins. Throughout this book, Alice is faced with many different obstacles in her attempts to follow the White Rabbit. She meets string different and somewhat magical creatures and at one point seeks advice from Cheshire Cat. Alice attends the Mad Tea Party, where s More...

I read this right after Through the Looking-Glass (I know, I did them out of order), and my feelings about both are fairly similar, so I recommend that review for more details).

The strengths of "Alice" were pretty much the same as those in "Looking Glass" - wordplay, logic, poetry. Again, Carroll tends to use the same tricks repeatedly, but I was generally impressed with the execution. I thought the chapter with the Mock Turtle was particularly strong, and actuall More...

Read this in one sitting for a book club in my dormitory.

So, what can I say? I think a teacher paralleled some of my own stories to this, and I can kind of see it; however, the subversion in the book - at least, according to TV Tropes - is that it parodies the surreal and it tries to not have a real moral. In fact, it parodies those who look for morals in everything, as well.

It makes for great children's literature, though, what with the predominance of imagination in sol More...

Adventures in Wonderland, by good ol’ Lewis Carroll, with shiny illustrations from Camille Rose Garcia. It’s fast become one of my prized books. It’s so pretty. And pink. And sinister. And pretty—the pages so glossy and yummy, and that new book smell, and that new book smell peculiar to art/design books.
