The editors have compiled a fine set of biographical essays about significant leaders of the 19th Century U.S. Army on the frontier. Those who are not familiar with these men will find this book a great place to begin their exploration of the topic of frontier military history, and those who are familiar with the topic will learn additional details about these frontier military leaders and their accomplishments through the original research included in these essays.

A great collection of short biographies on all the leading US Army commanders, from William Clark (1770-1838) through Charles King (1844-1933), ably selected and edited by my old history professor, Paul Andrew Hutton, who has become quite famous as a talking head on various History Channel docs on the American West. With an introduction my Hutton's mentor, Robert M. Utley.

A collection of short biographies on several army officers who played a role in America's westward expansion. There are some surprising entries here. This is a good resource.
