So much better than the first book, I can understand now why kids gets so sucked into this series. Looking back after reading this one, the first book is like the pilot of a tv series, taking you through various settings, introducing the different species, and setting up some of the plot point, but not spending a lot of time on actual plot.
In this book Twig must find his way back to Sanctaphrax, the city of academics, after his father's sky ship crashes while chasing the great storm i...more

First of all, let me get out that I didn't like Twig (the main character.) He was arrogant, hot-tempered, dishonest, and basically a crybaby. I also thought this book was rather dark for a children's book. (Okay it was very dark, filled with murders, body parts being cut off, and the walking dead.) That being said, it was MUCH better than the first book in the series, simply because it had an actual plot. Instead of Twig wandering around getting chased by random beasts, he actually had a go...more

Twig, son of a sky pirate, continues his adventures in book 2 of The Edge Chronicles series. Vilnix Pompoinius, self-appointed Most High Academe on Sanctaphrax, has quietly depleted the community's supply of phraxdust and stormphrax which holds the floating city in place. The Professor of Light assigns the task of finding more to Cloud Wolf, the sky pilate who is Twig's father.
When Twig's father's voyage to replenish the supply is thwarted by a mutiny attempt on the Stormchaser that...more

I adored this book!
Upon finishing the first book of The Edge Chronicles (of which there are 10) which is also the first book of The Twig Trilogy, I had expectations for the second book. Paul Stewart needed to elaborate on the fantastic world of The Edge which he had hinted at in the first book. He needed to write deeper and construct a novel that was more than loosely connected segments. He needed to establish a narrative and construct a fuller plot because I saw potential in the sto...more

Stormchaser (Edge 2) is the skyship of pirate Captain Cloud Wolf aka former Quintus, sent for stormphrax, solid lightning heavy enough to hold down the entire academic city Sanctaphrax. To rule, corrupt Vilnix Pompolnius crushed the rare substance into phraxdust which purifies any liquid to pure drinkable water, but he does not know what special conditions can replicate the process. Instead of staying safe behind in Undertown, secret son Twig stows away. Multiple threads pull together so the rea...more
Stormchaser, the second book of the series, tells the tale of a great Sky Ship voyage as the screw, including young Twig, chases after a Great Storm in the hopes of bringing back the ever-sacred Stormphrax for the sacred city of Sanctaphrax.
This book had more of a plot than the previous one. The first book seemed like an introduction to the world on the Edge as well as an introduction to all the creatures and peoples that inhabit it. In this book, instead of the Deepwoods, we find ourselves in Sanctaphrax, Undertown, and the Mire, and three new places can be added to our knowledge of the Edge. I love the illustrations and the originality of the series; despite similar elements which occur in all fantasy books, this series has been ...more
Again, 3 stars for this series.
It's very enjoyable, dull in parts, really predictable and silly in some. But it's a young adult/kids book, and it reads as such.
Though the story is ultimately that of triumph, the struggles and darkness that is evident throughout the story came as a bit of a shock. Whereas the 1st book was all about new situations and not developing characters or plots well, this one was almost the complete opposite, developing all the characters, but sort ...more

Let's see... Its been a few years since I've read this book. So... Twig finally joins his father Quintus on the Stormchaser and he meets tons of other awesome characters. They are on a quest to find The Great Storm that will bring Stormphrax to the Academy so that it will stay a float and not let go of the anchor chain. So this is a daring quest and an adventurous book with a few mistakes made along the way. As you can see I can't remember much from this book but I can remember the first book an...more
I am quite enjoying this fantasy series.
Twig is back and on another adventure. This time as a sky pirate. I don't want to give anything away so won't say much. Between dire situations, treacherous people and dangerous terrain this book keeps the pages turning.
I am excited to read the next book in the Twig trilogy.
Apparently the Edge Chronicles are three trilogies and four more stand alone books. While I am enjoying it I doubt that I will start the next set...more

Much better story than the first one in the series. Here you see Twig as a young man coming into his own. Although he is still a boy at the beginning of the story as his life changes, he matures and not only becomes a man but takes on responsibilities that help his character develop more fully. Still see a lot of creativity in the setting but this book has some meat to the story beyond a young boy wondering about a forest and being scared most of the time. I look forward to reading the rest of t...more

As of this review, I am 33 years old and have read 5 of the Edge Chronicles...I pick one up every few months or so when I need to not think about much for a while. This one, the 2, is my favourite so far. Although a juvenile series, these are the sort of oddball good read that transcends age groups and timelines...high adventure, bizarre characters, no set sense of good vs. evil, intriguing illustrations and unpredictable plots....I'm a big fan and will surely read the whole series.

Stormchaser: My Review
After rereading this book for the fourth or fifth time I was freshly reminded why this is my absolute favorite. First of all, the descriptions are astounding. Second, the illustrations are amazing (for those who listen to this on audio, they are missing half of the book). Another thing I love is Twig. He starts off as a young inexperienced sky pirate, but then becomes someone people have reason to be afraid of. I love this change, and I feel it is very realistic, as y...more

Sanctaphrax is a city of knowledge and wit. It is home to academics, alchemists and apprentices, and the views are breathtaking with its tall thin towers connected by viaducts and walkways. But the floating city above the Edge is in perilous danger. A huge chain is attached to the bottom of the floating rock Sanctaphrax is built upon, and is weighted down with priceless stormphrax so it won't drift away. But the city's treasury of stormphrax is quickly diminishing as it is taken by the scurrilou...more
This was one of those rare books that the sequel was better than the original. While the first one had a totally random craziness, where it was hard even to discern a plot, this one had a clear plot, and it was nice how you got parts of it early with different characters, so when they reached that character, you had some idea how the meeting was going to go.
Twig is a really likable character. He cries, he makes mistakes, he's afraid, and he's also strong. I found him really likable, which...more

If Ursula K. LeGuin and Neil Gaiman had a baby, it would be this series. Really enjoyable coming-of-age saga, some predictability but also some quirks and surprises. The illustrations are intricate and help move the stories along.
The Edge Chronicles are rather vivid for a YA fantasy series, but I guess if Emo Mormon Teen Vampire Porn is YA, then this is too.

Finished reading Stormchaser and am very pleased with where it too me.
They ended up back in the twilight woods, w/ new creatures and adventures.
The stormchasing and the serch for stormphrax was not as exciting, but crutial to where the book was heading :)
a few fun quotes

The adventure continues for the adventurer Twig and his friends, the skypirates. This book has a much more defined plot than the original book, but in a way, I kinda missed the craziness of the first book. We do get to learn more how Twig's world works. This book is a nice series for preteens who aren't that interested in reading simply because it's easy to read and fun besides!
A very nice read. My only criticism really is that I think the second book is much more complex than the first. I worry that younger readers (ages 10 to 12) may not be able to enjoy the second book as they did 'Beyond the Deep Woods'. However, I loved how everything tied together in the end. The second book is also much more gruesome than the first.
I definitely liked this book better than the first in the series. The story flows better and I was already used to the way this fantasy world is set up, so I wasn't distracted from the story itself. I still feel like too many characters are ripped away from you just when you're getting to know and like them, but I think I will continue the series.
some dark disturbing things going on but Christopher has been ok with it. Not sure how I feel about it. ~ Update ~ Christopher decided it was too gruesome and too many people die. He didn't want me to finish it with him. I did finish it and I believe it is a well written book but it is very gruesome. I don't know how I feel about it as a kids book. Maybe for teenagers, but it's in the Children's section of the library.
I've heard that this is the most ... gruesome of the series, and I hope that's true, since this one got a little dark. I loved that there was more of a story line for this book, and I liked how all the elements wove together. Still, there were a lot of murders and other disturbing details.
If you like fantasy books, you will like this book. Twig is now 16 years old. He joins the crew of his father’s sky ship. He is on a dangerous mission to collect the powerful stromphrax from floating away. So if you like fantasy, I recommend this book for you.
formulaic. i also started to get worried that this could become a neverending sky pirate hardy boys. it's not bad though. not bad. also not notable in the least. sky pirates. vampirates. for much better books, go for the peter ones.
I bought this as a present for my younger brother a few years ago, but since he doesn't get into reading much, I was the one that read it. Although I didn't read the first one in this series, I wasn't too lost and it was overall a good story.
The story format was different, was quite a bit darker than the 1st in the series and had some politics that were hard for my 10 year old to understand. Still very intriguing with fascinating pictures. Think we will wait to read the 3rd.
I like this book because its like a fantase story. It talks about animals in a different world and there is dragons and other creters.you would like this book if you like books that are fiction stores. You could find it in a public librery.
