Every day, I learn more about magick. The more I learn, the more my power grows. Sometimes, my own strength frightens me.

I know I'm alone, though. Cal is with me, my soul mate, my partner, my love.

Now I feel a shadow over us. When I cast out my senses, I pick up danger. But is it real, or is it all in my mind?

This one was somewhat better. I still think I know what the big twist is or will be. Seems to me like Tiernan is dragging it out. The ending was anticlimactic in my opinion.

Oh poor little Morgan... I'll likely read the next one just to see when she FINALLY realizes she's just a tool. I just hope it's not too late now for her.

That said, I still feel like the overarching series needs work. What saved this one was the introduction of new "mysterious" characters. I'll admit though that it took me a...more

And so the plot thickens. Things are beginning to unwind and show themselves already and we are onl onto Book three. It appears now that not everything might be what it appears to be, that perhaps there is a bit of covering up going on and those who are kinda nd gentle are being blinded from the truth. What I love about this series so far is the fact that nothing seems to be overly obvious. There are still secrets and mysteries to be worked out and that of course means there is this huge sense o...more

You know, I'm a grown woman. I should know better. I shouldn't be enjoying these books so much. I shouldn't be so annoyed that I have to wait to continue reading until the bookstore gets the next ones in. It's like my inner 14-year-old is in control.

I mean, these books have no plot. Stuff happens, but there's absolutely no "beginning, middle, end" structure to speak of. They just are, and suddenly they end, generally on a cliffhanger. The Wicca is obviously inaccurate and the rhyming spells are...more

Overall: The Sweep series by Cate is a light read, yet still really interesting. I felt like this was the sorbet course, a hiatus, amidst my reading of George RR Martin's much weightier tomes. Every novel covers Magick, young love and fitting in (or not!).

However, a novel in the Sweep series is so short that it is almost a chapter in the lives of the characters.
Plus: The Wiccan research is pretty intense, and the books give an authentic feel to being in a coven and the troubles/challenges a youn...more

The great thing about this series is that the books are so short & the author makes the most of those pages. The story is neither rushed nor horribly drawn out- something that many series tend to fall victim to.

This particular book picks up where the last volume left off, with Morgan discovering her deceased mother's book of shadows in Selene's hidden library. Luckily Morgan is able to leave with the book, but is ultimately unable to truly answer all of her questions... and she's left with...more

The third book in this amazing series is more of a joy to read than the first two.
This is the book in which we see Morgan start to come into her own. She is starting to realize who she is as a person and a witch. She is making choices that are taking her away from what others think is the right course of action for her, and toward what she believes to be right.
The author chooses to include entries from both Cal(Sgath) and Hunter (Giomanach) Book of Shadows. Once again, I find myself a little...more

Again, she leaves me with a cliffhanger! *Frustrated sigh*

Sucked me right in again with this one. Many surprises, revelations. I want to scream at Morgan... (the main character) for her to OPEN her eyes. Yet, it's just a book and I have to keep telling myself that.

It's late and I want to read the next one already, but it'll have to wait for tomorrow.

This one in the series delved more into Morgan's past. She found more of herself, and at the same time, I think she lost more of herself; odd. Ther...more

Woowy Zowwy!!

If anything - the endings of these books are fantastic!

Talk about evil cliffies! I'm already standing on the edge screaming NOES!!! because I don't have the next book.

I so wonder how people who read this series as it was released dealt with it. I wouldn't have had the patience.

"Blood Witch" starts right where "The Coven" left off. Morgan is in Selene's private hidden library where she find's her birth mom's Book of Shadows. Oh snap! And since we already know all about Mauve's Book o...more

My 100th review. =)

The review I made was deleted due to stupid internet connection, so I wrote this one which is shorter and more boring. I'm too lazy to find GIFs.

THE REVIEW
I found this installment of the Wicca series the same as the first two.

Morgan discovers that she, her mother and the whole Bellewicket coven are of the Woodbane clan, and so is her boyfriend, Cal. She learns that she is from a line of the most powerful witches. Hunter and Sky, also witches, are now here and Sky is the leader...more

*Rating: 3.5

*As before, I love the different journal entries at the beginning of the chapter. They give different perspectives to an otherwise one perspective book. Minor spoiler, I was totally slow and genuinely surprised when I found out Hunter was the new journal entry writer. I spend the entire book trying to figure out who it could be.

*Speaking of Hunter, wow! It's so going to be a messy love triangle, right? Relationships that start as antagonistic are always my favorites...

*Cal is...more

The first 2-3 books in this series are addictive, a fresh "modern-teen" POV in the tired genre of witches/kids with supernatural powers finding themselves (and the wonder of Wicca) among families/communities who "don't get it".

After #3, it goes downhill. There is no psychological development of the main characters (and the secondary characters are quite shallowly described and hard to distinguish throughout the series; even the more promising and believable ones, BFFs Bree & Robbie are essen...more

Today's review is on Blood Witch by Cate Tiernan

Blood Witch is the third book in the Sweep series and is as enjoyable as the first two. It is amazing that I, a 42 year old woman find the series so fun to read. The story line picks up right at the point where the book before leaves off. The books are short, sweet, and written so well I read each book in just one day each.

Morgan is led to the house in which her real parents had lived during a vision. When she and her friend Robbie go to that house...more

Gorgeous magick! I love that the author blends true Wiccan ideas and ethics into a fantasy series so well. The rituals and theories are true, but Morgan's powers not (some of them at least) and yet, it seems realistic. I love the idea of seven different clans.

Since I've already read this series before, I find myself mentally screaming at Morgan, hoping she will open her eyes and just see things for what they are. I wish she'd do a clarity spell, especially since the author drops little hints he...more

This book picks up immediately where the last one left off. Selene and Cal find Morgan in the private library where she has found her mother's Book of Shadows. Selene agrees that it belongs to Morgan and Morgan spends a lot of the book trying to get to know her mother better through it. Meanwhile, Bree and Raven are trying to steal members from Cal's coven. Matt is drawn away by Raven to the detriment of his relationship with Jenny and Robbie goes to one of their circles with Bree because he is...more

This series is a guilty pleasure, I'm coming to realize. There's a whole bunch of cliff-hanging at the end of each book, and a hell of a lot of foreshadowing. (Is Cal good? Is he evil? Dun dun dun... Tune in next time for....) And the heroine does such stupid things sometimes I just want to slap her. But, she is only 16 (turns 17 in this book), so maybe that's just par for the course.

I recommend these books if you want a quick escape from reality, but don't expect too much. I've been fortunate t...more

Morgan is learning more about her birth mother and her own powers. She is also growing fonder and fonder of Cal. But this may not be such a good thing. A new guy named Hunter keeps warning Morgan to stay away from Cal. A new coven is forming and it is run by a mysterious girl named Sky and several of her old coven are joining with Sky. There is no doubt that some dark magic is brewing. The question is where is it coming from.?

I just love these books. They are great for lunch books. I am enjoying...more

With each of these books I read, I begin to like the story even less. Nothing really happpened in this book, and all of the reveals I had figured out awhile ago (to me, it would be obvious, for the sole reason that it would cause conflict). Not to mentione Morgan was so very annoying in this book. She started out like able, and has gone down hill. Reading about the love she and Cal shared is becoming tedious. And the complete and utter blind faith and obtuseness? annoying. She's becoming a 'Bell...more

I can see where this is going and I'm not impressed. I also am just annoyed at the lack of creativity character wise. The whole best friends split up by a guy and then become enemies? I don't want to read stories about characters like that. Where are the positive messages? Who thought it would be a good idea to write about girls stabbing each other in the back, parents being unsupportive, and a man being the center of a woman's life? I dislike authors who do not give young adults honest, valuabl...more

Things start to become even more complicated than the love triangle in the previous two books as someone new comes in and challenges her reality. So many things have changed in her life in the last two books, and the only thing she knows she can count on is that Cal will always be there for her and he is the one good thing in her life. Hunter tests this when he meets Morgan and beging to talk porely of Cal. You see a different side to things as characters evolve and things begin to progress fart...more

I love this series. I thought however this book was a little slow in the beginning. It could also be that I was so busy with the holidays I didn't have time to read.

I love how the book always ends with high drama that makes you anxious for the next one.

The books make you think too....

In this one...I'm left wondering the following:

Hunter..... Is he ok (don't want to give away spoilers), Is Hunter telling the truth?

Cal....Is he telling the truth? Does he really love Morgan?

Morgan...What else will...more

Hmmmm this is the most interesting of the series so far. My ideas about Cal are slowly changing; I don't believe he is the good guy anymore. Morgan is embracing her witch side, and finding out more and more. She has her mother's book of shadows, as well as a box of things left by her mother. We have a side story of a boy accused of killing his brother. we have Bree and Raven betraying the coven.

Great writing, a great story and i'm really looking forward to reading more, and finding out what hap...more

This book was as wonderful reading as it was the first time around when I bought it a couple of years ago. Of course now that I'm older I seem to appreciate it more.
Basically I imagined Hunter as Tom Felton which made this a very awesome read because Tom Felton = sex. Though Hunter's character isn't made to be very likeable in this book, his resemblance to Tom made me hate him slightly less. I'm also such a big fan of Morgan and Cal's relationship that I catch myself grinning far too often withi...more

So what I said during Coven about Hunter was explained in this part. Cal just doesn't want to believe that his dad made a woman pregnant while his mom was pregnant of him. I could totally understand that.

If you read the parts of Sgàth you believe that he is really in love with Morgan and that he cares about her. Which is actually kind of cute if you have a thing for Cal. Which I had up till now. Soon it would be gone though.

I really like Robbie. (I haven't mentioned him before) He is a true fri...more

“Of course, when we got home, we found that Dagda had peed on my down comforter. He had also eaten part of Mom's maidenhair fern and barfed it up on the carpet. Then he had apparently worked himself into a frenzy sharpening his ting by amazingly effective claws on the armrest of my dad's favorite chair.
Now he was asleep on a pillow, curled up like a fuzzy little snail.
"God, he's so cute," I said, shaking my head.”
