Still loving Thais more of the two girls; she is just so much more down to earth and reads as the better character. Saying that her twin, Clio, is growing into a better character as well. I was glad she manage to clamp down her jealousy at having a sister, although it may have been interesting to read of a few sparks between them. I liked the Sophie/Manon interaction too, as we learn more about the coven. I'm liking where this storyline is going, with both girls trying to get over the same guy....more
Review on Balefire #2 The circle of Ashes
By: Cate Tiernan
The second series of Balefire is very interesting. Both of the twins; Clio and Thais eventually finds out that they are dating the same guy and thats pretty wierd. When both of them finds out they are dating the same guy, they have both gotten mad and felt screwed by the guy. In this second series of Balefire, Clio and Thais witness their home being torn down by the fire that had reached to their house while they were doing some spells and...more

The second installment of Balefire is definitely better than A Chalice of Wind.
It's more developed and every character has their own tragic unspeakable history.
Petra/Nan is a strong woman.
Luc is starting to grow on me surprisingly.
I do pity Richard and Manon. Being grown ups stucked in child body ... reminds me of the vampire child-women in An Interview with The Vampire by Anne Rice.
Clio and Richard? Well it solves the love triangle problem.
I still prefer Thais than Clio ;D

It was an easier read than the first book. There's a lot of mystery, which is what keeps me reading. Overall this is not my kind of book. I dont like most of the characters, and I dont know if it's just me, but the whole story feels so much darker than the wicca/sweep series Ever did. But I wanna know how it ends now, so soon I'll start in book 3. But I do know I'll only read these books ones, and I'll never buy them. While I've read the wicca/sweep series over and over :)

I have a few problems with this book. One of them is there is a lot of witch spell talk. It is a book about witches but I didn't need all the details of the circles and spells. It was boring to read to me to read about it. Besides that, it is an ok book. Enough to keep my attention. There are a few comments about kissing and sex. No graphic details just a few things said.

Nice book. It is way more obvious that Cate made this up though. The thing I loved about the Sweep series was that it all seemed very real, like it could actually happen. This is mostly because Wicca really is a religion. But in this series she describes a religion related to Wicca, which just seems less believable. But it is still a nice books, and I like the main characters in this book better.
I didn't enjoy going into the pasts of the members of the treize. Wasn't interested. I don't really prefer either of the twins and Luc straight up irks me. I'd be more impressed if it was Richard flirting with them both. Nothing to do with their appearance but simply because after finding out Luc's past hooking up with everyone, Ouida, Sophie, etc. it's pure ew.
I'm enjoying this series though it's taking a long time to get to the point and there are tons of characters all involved in the main theme. The Treize is a group of 13 witches (which includes both Thais and Clio) who are intending to perform some monster spell to give them all immortality and massive power. Of course there are side plots that are interesting, a few different groups of characters are plotting for their own gain. All these interplots are confusing and it will be interesting to se...more
And so the story continues.
Thais and Clio are heartbroken and in danger. Someone's out to get them and they don't know who. The Treize is nearly complete. Love interests appear from unexpected places. The story continues to unfold.
Even though I found the first book in the series (a Chalice of Wind) more compelling, a Circle of Ashes was still a good read. I'm intruiged to know what happens in the final 2 books.

Getting more intense than the first novel. Many questions are being raised yet answers seem to elude our twin heroines. Clio is becoming tempted by darker forces. Thais gets a backbone. Well somewhat.
I picked up this young adult series on a whim but was immediately hooked. The premise isn't wildly original, but I found the characters interesting and engaging -- and the conclusion after four books was satisfying. Thais, our heroine, suffers from the typical complaint many have about young adult heroines -- no supervision, usually easy time getting in and out of school, etc -- but I know I would have just eaten all of that up at 17. This series was the kind of book I wanted, with someone who h...more
Clio and Thais understood that they were twins who's mother died as a sacrifice when the coven did a immortality magic 200 years ago. Its pretty sad to see a girls who loved the same guy and were both betrayed and lost a mother. I really can't relate myself to them because I haven't had the same life and experience as them, but the author most definitely knows how to capture the reader and have you feel as you were th one in that situation. The truth I did feel anger at first and somehow it sedu...more

Wish I could find this book, it's out of print :(
The power created by a twin together can be greater than many people's power combined. In this book, Thais and Clio starts to experiment magic together and something's wrong with the outcome of the magic. That's not the only problem; the bigger problem is that someone is after them. Someone has continuously try to kill the twin ever since Thais arrived in New Orleans. The good part would be Thais meeting a guy called, Kevin. He seems to be a great guy, but does Thais even like him? Or is she doi...more
Why only three stars? Well it's definitely not a stand-alone book. It's a quick read, and you're always aware that it's just one episode in a series.
Still, it's a good read, very diverting, and I can't wait to find out what happens next to Thais and Clio. I'm still guessing about who the 'bad guys' are, and looking forward to reading the next instalment.

"was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1961. New Orleans is one of the most interesting American cities, and it has an incredibly rich and exotic culture that had a profound influence on me. Kids in other cities have lemonade stands; we sold voodoo gris-gris and made wax dolls in the likenesses of our enemies. It's a very beautiful city, and the constant heat and humidity make gardens grow out of contro...more
