This was my favorite book from childhood -- back in the late 50s and early 60s it wasn't common to have a strong female character (even if she had to pretend to be a boy to have adventures), so this book really spoke to me at age 10. Plus, it takes place in Scotland during the Jacobite Rebellion, and has Bonnie Prince Charlie as the hero, so what could be better than that? Read with Zoe- it was the first book written by this author, so it was interesting to see how her style had changed over time. Interesting retelling of the story of bonnie Prince Charles Stewart and the story of Scottish Highlander uprising, and a great main character.

Watson is a YA historical fiction writer, mostly about the British royals. She moved to England in 1964 and lived there for 24 years. Her most well-known works are parts of her English Family Tree series. Most of her books went out of print in the 1970s, many eventually reprinted by Image Cascade. She has also written YA novels set in ancient Egypt.
